  1. I can't believe people are suggesting wasting an option of a useful player like McClendon to bring up an absolutly useless player like Gomez. McClendon earned his way here by dominating AAA. Gomez, not surprisingly, has a 717 OPS in AAA. Also, Nashville's season runs through September 6th this year. Gomez can play fulltime there. He should not be a September 1st call-up. What for? Are we in a race? Even if we were, he doesn't help us. If he earns a call-up after the 6th, I'd consider it, but that shouldn't eveb be a sure thing.
  2. It tough to understant the value of this player. He had a high OPS, in a hitters park. He was an abysmal defender, but was playing out of position. He's having a bad season, but he's dealt with injuries. However, he's 31, so some of his regression was predictable. I think I'll pass, and let Hart or Braun be Fielders replacement, with a good defensive OF added to the lineup.
  3. The Brewers pick conservatively most years, and have still had a lot of success. Matt LaPorta at $2 million was a better buy than Andrew Brackman at $3.3 million. Picking early to mid 1st round makes it possible for the Brewers to get high quality talent picking conservatively. If the Brewers start picking late 1st round, then conservative picks might be more problematic. Mike Minor and Mike Leake were criticized for being conservative picks in last years draft, I wish we had picked high enough to make those conservative picks. I do wish we'd spend more on the draft, but I'd like to do that in rounds 2-4, pick up guys like Tim Mellville, Will Myers, and AJ Cole. We did add Kentrail Davis that way, and thats turned out better than I anticipated. The baseball budgett is based on projected revenue, not previous seasons revenue. So if the team decides to go cheap with the MLB team, that would lead them to project reduced attendance, thus projecting less revenue. The extra $10 million dollars wouldn't be there to spend. Money not spent this year simply becomes profit and increases the value of the franchise. It doesn't carry over into next years budget. The best way to increase the draft budget is expect to win big and make money at the MLB level.
  4. Well, the Pirates and the Mets combined to help. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gifWell then the Marlins belong part of this too, for beating the Mets. It was Fredi Gonzalez who used his closer in the 8th inning, the biggest spot of the game, that was huge in beating the Mets. I'd love a manager with the courage to do that. Fredi is the guy.
  5. I too have interest in him, but how is he better, or even different, than Parra? Both had a decent season their 1st year as starters, and have been bad since. Owings hasn't been any better as a reliever than Parra has been as a starter this year.
  6. Casey McGehee struggled against all minor league pitching his entire career. He never once had an OPS above 776 in the minors. 776 is a terrible slump for Gamel. What suprises me Briggs is that you wouldn't be more excited to get a lefthanded bat into the lineup. You've often blamed many of Fielders slumps on the fact that he's our only lefty. I would think you'd be Gamel's biggest advocate.
  7. And Brent Brewer I had never even heard of Brent Brewer pre-draft.
  8. Fixed. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Thanks, I do like that a lot better.
  9. I don't think the Brewers will be completely ignoring short pitchers, they just drafted 5'11" Tyler Thornburg in the 3rd round. What they will be avoiding is short pitchers without plus velocity, like Will Inman or Randy Wolf.
  10. True, but Sale signed for less in exchange for a Septemember call-up, which will put him on the 40 man roster. I think he may have been called up already. Skole accepted a pre-draft deal at #15 because it was much higher than he was projected to go. The Rangers wanted a pre-draft deal in place because that pick was compensatory for not signing last years #15, so it came with no further compensation for an unsigned pick. Its the same situation the Brewers will be in next, right down to the number of the selection. I don't know if the Brewers will seek a pre-draft deal, but expect a conservative selection.
  11. Yes, it will be fun having 2 1st rounders, and handy considering they'll likely surrender their 2nd rounder for signing a type A FA. With $20-30 million in budget room, that's almost a lock.
  12. I agree. The Covey family didn't even take all the time allotted to them, they broke off talks early. They could have waited literally until the 11th hour. That's actually common place in these negotiations. They could have even requested the commisioners office give them an extension under these special circumstances, but instead they volintarilly rushed their descision. As I stated earlier, the Brewers may have actually gotten lucky here in these very unfortunate circumstances.
  13. The shocker for me was Kyle Parker. He turned down $2.25 million earlier in the summer, but now signed for $1.4 million. He was my hoped selection for the Brewers.
  14. If he had went JUCO, he'd be eligible for the next draft. He could have attended a JUCO closer to home. Also, with his circumstances, I'd think SD would have let him out of his letter of intent to attend a college closer to home, and not have to move onto a college campus in 2 weeks. I know some are claiming this move was made with only his health in mind, but we see no evidence of that. I can't agree with the idea that the best thing for his health 2 weeks from now is to leave home and move onto a college campus 2 hours away. Either way, the Brewers may have dodged a bullet here. While the Brewers did the admiral thing and still pushed to sign him, I wonder if they'd still made this selection if he had this diagnosis 2 days before the draft instead of 2 days before signing day? There's really no way to know how he'll recover physically from this.
  15. Thanks for your insight. I do have to ask though, if your choices immediately after the diagnosis were to sign a pro contract now for $2 million dollars without needed to start your career until late February, or turn it down, leave home and start college and baseball fall practice in 2 weeks, which would you choose?
  16. Eh, I'm not so sure. Heck, we could draft him at #15 next year, and everything will be pretty much the same as if he would have signed today. No, he's eliminated himself from the draft for 3 years by choosing to attend a 4 year school.
  17. I understand what your saying, but by turning down the bonus, he's shut himself out of that money for at least 3 years, possibly forever. That money could be a serious asset in dealing with his issues. If he takes the money, nothing changes for him tomorrow. He could stay home as long as he wants if he turns pro now. Did you really think the Brewers were going to demand he be in Arizona tomorrow if he signed? By choosing college, he's actually rushing the life style adaptations he'll be going through. The scheduale of a college student athlete is far more hectic than a minor league baseball player. If he had signed, he wouldn't leave the Maryvale complex until 11 months from now. It would be a far more stable environment than college.
  18. Oh yeah; and I'm sure the Twins are glad they have Hardy at his salary and healthiness versus a cheap, young player with upside, like Escobar, right? Huh? Hardy was traded for Escobar? What are you saying? I'm sure the Twins are esctatic they have Hardy instead of Gomez, as they're almost 2 wins better because of it.
  19. He's going to be playing baseball in college, which means he'll have the same long bus rides, a hectic and constantly changing academic responsibilities, but he won't have $2 million while he tries to manage it all.
  20. I can't think of a better way to put myself in position to deal with a life altering medical issue than to put $2 million dollars in my pocket. A truely idiotic descision by the Covey family. How to deal with diabetes: be 2 hours from home, which is too far to have any real support, or be rich. Should have been an easy descision. Brandon Morrow deals with the same issue, and the Brewers had a minor leaguer several years ago who had it too.
  21. Dang, that's disappointing. It really would have been exciting having Jones in the system.
  22. Hardy is 1.8 WAR this year, thats 2 1/2 times better than Escobar, despite the fact that Hardy has missed significant time with injury. If he was here, he'd start every day, and Escobar would go back to AAA where he belonged this season. Why would the Twins non-tender Hardy when they could just trade him?
  23. As mentioned earlier, Ruth once outhomered every other team. To put that in perspective, to accomplish the same feat last season, a player would have needed to hit 245 homers.
  24. Isn't kind of hypacritical to say the Brewers should be open minded about a players size, but close-minded about what conference a player comes from? I'm with Colby, Arnett was an awesome prospect. I seen him pitch in college, and I then pimped him pre-draft the same way I did with Braun and Lawrie. Did I suddenly go cross-eyed? I've seen Arnett pitch on TV this year and twice live. He hasn't been the same guy. I don't know where his stuff or control went, but its not there. Hopefully its related to the injury.
  25. Smoak, who they got in the Lee deal, is an outstanding 1B prospect, and a huge part of their future. Ackley has been moved to 2B. They won't contend next year, so I don't see them being interested in Fielder. Texas, Toronto, and the White Sox make the most sense for Fielder in the offseason. With Jackson in Chicago, a package involving Fielder and Danks might fit both teams after the season.
