  1. Well with Marlins shopping Ozuna and quite possibly Yelich and with J D Martinez out there as a FA, it's no wonder teams aren't valuing Santana all that high. Speaking of Martinez, why not make a big splash and sign him to take him off the market and take the best offer you can get for Santana? Then you could still deal Brinson or Phillips for a quality pitcher.
  2. I'd be fine with Corbin as a #4 or a #5.
  3. Somebody posted the same thing when Swarzak was acquired. My worry is more that his performance last year was really not up to his previous standards. Could be talking about Nova and not Cole. Nova fits the profile, with 2 seasons of control too and wouldn't cost as much.
  4. There's no reason to be scavenging at the bottom level of FA pitchers until late January. You only overpay signing guys like Chavez now. Especially before you see if you can get a quality guy in a deal. There's a level between the high end guys and Chavez. Heck if you want to shop at that level, why not bring back Yo? At least he was good at one time.
  5. Breakout: Perrin Bounce Back: Taylor Sleeper: Yamamoto Bust: Nottingham
  6. Agreed. Would be dumbfounded if they gave this guy a major league deal.
  7. He's a top 20 prospect in all of baseball for a reason. Look will he be as good as Santana in 2018? Defensively, he will. But they can make up for much of the loss of Santana's bat, and allow Brinson to ease into the big leagues. Carlos Gonzalez could be available for a restore value one year FA deal. Melky Cabrera is a professional corner OF bat. Andre Either is available. Point is, if they deal Santana, they need to acquire a short term productive corner OF bat or move Thames to the OF and acquire a platoon partner for Aguilar (Morrison??). Those are all doable options.
  8. Williams, Wang and Lopez are all guys who likely won't make the team out of spring training but will see plenty of action for the Brewers in 2018. There's always a need.
  9. Hey Feliz is out there. Seriously, those of you wanting to give Villar another chance, the same logic applies to Feliz does in not? He was better with the Royals, and was really good in 2016. He'll be a lot cheaper now too!
  10. I would agree. Santana has broken out, while Manaea is just a decent/interesting guy at this point. I also don't think he has the upside we'd be looking for in a trade for Santana. I'm of the "give villar a shot" camp, and don't have a ton of interest in someone like Lowrie. Then again, any deal for a 2b should include Villar or the end result should be him getting traded. He either should start everyday to try and regain his form or play for someone else. The fact that Villar was deep on the bench down the stretch was a sign they were ready to move on. Seriously, why would a team that came within a game of the playoffs risk making the same costly error they made the previous season? That would be like them signing Feliz again because he was good in 2016, and he deserves another chance. Villar isn't an unknown. He was a marginal player when the Brewers acquired him, then had one magical season, and was back to the the guy he was before 2016. He's not a kid, he's a known quantity. Defensively he's subpar anywhere you put him, despite the occasional highlight play. Brewers talk a good game about Villar because they don't want to destroy what value he has. Let a rebuilding club take flyer on him.
  11. Brewers are showing interest in Lowrie. He's very similar to Walker but with only one year left on his deal. Shouldn't take a lot to get him, maybe Villar?
  12. If the Mets are looking for a 2B, would seem to me a Villar for Harvey swap would make sense as a change of scenery deal.
  13. Archer is being marketed as if he's an ace. He's not even close. Now for 5 innings, he looks the part but rarely if ever gets past the 6th. An overpay is an overpay. I'd rather pay the cost of a number 3 and get a number 3 than pay the going rate for an ace, and get an average at best, number 2. Odorizzi's WHIP since becoming a starter: 1.280, 1.152, 1.194, and 1.242. That's pitching in the NL East where he faced some very tough lineups. Nelson's WHIP in 4 seasons: 1.457, 1.286, 1.517, 1.249. That's right, even last year, by far Nelson's best, Odorizzi had a better WHIP. Sure he's a flyball pitcher, but he's consistently fanned 8 or more per 9 innings and that's without facing the opposing pitcher in the vast majority of his starts.
  14. Broxton's comp? That's easy. Perfect comp is Drew Stubbs.
  15. Waiving Scooter who would go on to hit 27 HR and knock in 97 runs in under 500 AB was not a "minor blemish". It cost them a playoff berth. But worse was getting 2 nondescript minor leaguers for a guy who would go on to do something no Brewer hitter in history has done, that is hit 40+ HR in back to back seasons. I'm speaking of Krush Davis. It's not that he traded Davis. Eventually that was going to happen. But he jumped the gun and settled for minimal return. Davis was clearly blossoming as a premier power bat at the end of 2015. He just hadn't put it together over a full season due to an injury earlier that year. Stearns has done a lot of good things, but he severely mis-evaluated two players who were already here when he arrived.
  16. And was ridden into the ground in the playoffs, especially the World Series. Yeah he was on fumes in the World Series. No telling if his arm will have the same life next year. It's a gamble.
  17. If you offer SF Villar and Broxton for Panik, you'll get laughed at. Neither has much if any value. Panik is a Gold Glove and All Star caliber 2B. SF might consider trading Panik for Santana. If their lucky, they could include a pitcher who can fill a rotation spot. Maybe Phillips, Perez and a pitching prospect will get Panik, but I seriously doubt they want Villar or Broxton. Look, Stearns dealt Khris Davis, a devastating RH bat who's posted 2 straight 40+ HR seasons since being traded (something no Brewer has ever done), and all he got back was two very suspect prospects. Ah but Davis was a liability defensively you say and they had to make room for Santana. Well Santana is a liability defensively too and Brinson is a higher rated prospect than Santana plus there's any number of short term options in the corner OF market to replace Santana. I'd be willing to bet that that the feeling among Giants fans is that if they're going to trade Panik, they better get a haul in return. They feel the same about Panik that most Brewer fans feel about Santana. Villar and Broxton are not a haul.
  18. I wouldn't say they have a massive hole at 1B/DH. A year ago Bird was probably more hyped than Judge and they are still high on him. As for DH, they now have 2 RF, Stanton and Judge. I'm sure they'll find a guy to DH.
  19. You do realize that Panik is considered one of the best all around 2B in baseball? Not only has he been an All Star (2015), but he's won a Gold Glove, owns a career .282 BA, a career .345 OBP, and a .439 career slugging percentage away from spacious A T & T Park, but he's one of the toughest to strike out in all of baseball. He's also controllable through 2020. Heck a straight up deal Santana for Panik is not a horrible deal at all. If they include Samardzija, I'd say it's a win for the Brewers. Brewers can find a veteran corner OF bat in FA to fall back on if Brinson's not quite ready, but Brinson is the centerpiece of the rebuild and is being counted on to deliver sooner rather than later, and Phillips showed down the stretch he may well be ready now for everyday duty. I agree panik is a good player, but Santana is far more valuable. A 1 for 1 deal is unlikely. A high end 2b doesn't even sniff the value of a stud RF. Look no further than the free agent market. Walker is a very good 2b and projects to get like 3/36. Bruce and Martinez are seeking 100m+. They might not get it, but the difference in value is clear. The giants would obviously need to send us major league talent to get Santana, but I still don't think it's happening. Santana is a very good bat, though stud is a stretch, but he's a negative defensively in a different way than Khris Davis, but it affects their value. We all know the return on Davis was less than eye-popping. The other guy out there who'd available via trade is Avisail Garcia and the Brewers are in better position to land him than are many other teams. Point is dealing Santana doesn't mean the Brewers can't fill his spot with another very good bat. Garcia has 2 less years of control, but he's close in age, and a Venezuelan who'd fit right in with the likes of Arcia and Perez. Trades aren't made in a vacuum.
  20. It's official. No word on what's going back to Miami. Rich get richer. Nothing seems to change in baseball.
  21. You do realize that Panik is considered one of the best all around 2B in baseball? 22. I don't see dealing Santana as " punting" on 2018. They can get plenty back and still have plenty to spend on a bat. Carlos Gonzalez anyone? Thames can play OF too allowing Aguilar to play full time at 1B or they can make a run at Hosmer.
  23. Done Count me in and I'm not all that high on Archer. Let's not forget Guerra in discussion of rotation. His year was derailed on opening day, but he's healthy and the X factor.
  24. He was fourth string behind Walker, Sogard and Perez after they acquired Walker. Look Villar has a fairly extensive track record and it's not all that good. 2016 was the anomaly. He strikes out way too much. He makes too many errors, both mental and physical. Anyone who expect him to repeat his 2016 season will be disappointed. Stearns biggest mistake since he became GM was dumping Gennett for nothing and handing his job to Villar. Repeating that move is insane.
  25. It's a weird offseason so far. Usually guys like Fiers don't get signed until late for minimal money. Agents must have realized that that getting guys signed before teams spend money is better. Fiers and Tigers are good fits. He's a flip candidate with a good first half and that's where Tigers are in their rebuild.
