  1. Maybe, maybe not. San Diego cornered the market on low level FA last year and got 3 guys all for $1.75 million, Richard, Cahill and Chacin. For a good team Garza would be a depth guy and come to camp as a 6th or 7th starter. They won't pay $5 million for a depth piece. A rebuilding team like the White Sox could take a flier and hope to recoup some value though they might prefer to sign some guys to minor league deals or for under $3 million. The Brewers will likely have Nelson, Davies, Anderson as the big 3. They need room for their guys knocking on the door in their system. I don't think they'll pick up his option.
  2. Anderson. No contest. Lepay is a radio play by play guy and good at it.
  3. I'd still go after a lefty hitting OF that can play all 3 positions and is under contract for another year. They are 5 back in the Wild card with no team in between. Adding a vet like Span who's contract is hefty won't cost much in return but could be the difference for this offense. That's worth the money.
  4. assuming that garza's slot on thursday is not the next tba, saturday's starter (essentially junior guerra's spot) is undetermined. brandon woodruff threw 5.0 innings on saturday. Comes down to either Jungmann or Woodruff I imagine. Since Woodruff is still technically on rehab assignment, he's probably the guy. Either way though it's just temporary with 2 starts max. Anderson is close to a rehab assignment and hopefully all goes well and he's back in a couple weeks. Of course by then Garza will probably come up with some other ailment.
  5. Comparing Brinson to Santana based on their ranking in their respective systems is fairly arbitrary and not a likely indicator of furure success. . In 2014 when Santana started 0 for 17 Houstons system was much better than ours. Their top prospects included Springer and Correra. If those 2 as prospects were currently in our system Brinson would not be our number 1 prospect either. If anything showing what santana did makes me less concerned about Brinson. Is it too much to ask that Bronson produce to the level Arcia did last year? That's a pretty low bar.
  6. Espino isn't an ideal candidate for anything other than a 5th starter in AAA. He certainly shouldn't be on the 40 man.
  7. Same could have been said about Santana. No im not worried......maybe have a little patience.....not everybody starts to hit the moment they get called up. Count me concerned. The Santana comparison is a good one, but when Santana started 0 for 17 with Houston, he hadn't yet turned 22 and wasn't the number 1 prospect in their system. Brinson is 23 and he's the top prospect on what is being billed as a very good system. Makes me worry not just about Brinson, but the overall quality of the Brewer prospects if he's #1.
  8. Between Brinson and Broxton, they are something like 8 for their last 92. What's disturbing to me is that they didn't think filling that huge hole in the lineup was a big enough of a problem in a pennant race to go out and land a decent rental at least to fill in. Heck Carlos Gomez would have been a huge upgrade and they could still probably get him in a waiver deal. By the way when the number one prospect in your system with over 2,300 minor league PA, comes to the big leagues and looks lost going 5 for 45 you have a problem. This is our number one prospect? He passes the athletic eyeball test, but they need a baseball player, not a wide receiver. Phillips at least looked like he belonged and now he's back at AAA. Dumbfounded.
  9. I have empathy for fans who will die before they seriously go after a championship. A lot will. Heck it's been 35 years and I see no sign that any World Series are likely anytime in the foreseeable future. There's an awful lot of fans that have passed away since 1982. They had a chance this year. Not a great chance but a chance and guess who got the 2 guys who would have been the most help? That's right. The Cubs did. I'm an optimist. I won't throw in the towel just yet. But it's discouraging. As for the rebuild? That's almost laughable. I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard about some rosy future for this team. They had more hope when John Jaha, Jeff Cirillo and David Nilsson were top prospects in their system. How'd that work? And those guys actually had some success in the big leagues. They have some nice prospects. So what, they should have. Some of them aren't producing in A ball. Oops! Brewers can't go out and buy Jon Lester's of the world. They never will.
  10. No, but it surprises me some people actually think Stearns is passive. He certainly has been this month letting his rivals sew up the division while he stood pat.
  11. I see the equivalent of Dubon, Ponce, and Ray or Clark. I'd have done that in a heartbeat.
  12. Any chance Brewers call up Hiura to be a bench bat in September? Only half joking.
  13. Rangers would have DFA'd Jeffress if they didn't find a deal. I'll be shocked if he's tendered this winter.
  14. They were in a playoff hunt, and the offense wet the bed establishing a new record for futility with men in scoring position. They are something like 0 for their last 30 with RISP. But seeing as this is optimism thread, they are due.
  15. In 3 years the Cubs will stlll be dealing their prospects for good major league players to fill their few holes, and be 15 games ahead of the Brewers. Epstein and Hoyer are head and shoulders above Stearns and will still have the advantage of a budget twice the Brewers'. As a small market team you're not going to beat the big market teams by doing what they do and trading away the farm every trade deadline when you're in the race. We've tried that already and that lead to a limited window of competitiveness and sent us into this mess that required a rebuild. Those were the only 2 playoff appearances since 1982. It took Melvin being aggressive to get even that done. Being passive doesn't work and won't work. Since the All Star game, not only have the Cubs secured the division for 2017 by being aggressive, but have eliminated the Brewers' chances for 2018 and 2019 as well. If picking up Wilson or Quintana wasn't working a year from now, just deal them and get most of what you paid to get them back just as they did with Greinke.
  16. Brewers bullpen has more losses than any pen in baseball. Part of that is the lack of quality and depth in the pen, part is how Counsell uses them, and part is the offensive failures in crunch time as the hitters all swing for the fences. Isn't it time to question Darnell Coles?
  17. Jungmann is Skysox scheduled starter tonight. Knowing how the Brewers operate and don't mind having throw-away games, it'll be Garza or Espino. I'm still holding out hope it's Hader, who by the way doesn't need "some much needed rest" after 53 pitches. Geesh. He should be ready to go tomorrow out of the pen.
  18. In 3 years the Cubs will stlll be dealing their prospects (which Theo will draft and sign and develop between now and then) for good major league players to fill their few holes, and be 15 games ahead of the Brewers who will still be telling us to be patient because even though the first and second wave of prospects were busts, that third wave is really something. Epstein and Hoyer are head and shoulders above Stearns and will still have the advantage of a budget twice the Brewers'. One franchise is trying to sell hope for some future that never seems to get here and the other is selling winning. Brewers have 2, count em 2 playoff appearances in 35 years. Pathetic.
  19. The last few weeks showed me how when your rival beats you to the punch and makes the acquisitions you hoped for, it energizes your rival and discourages your team. In short, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. This entire Brewer team has been stung by the Cubs' aggressiveness and Stearns' passive approach. It could be a decade before the Brewers are up by 5 and a half games at the break. Despite breakout years by Shaw and Santana, there are still plenty of question marks and no apparent plan to address them other than to hope young players develop. Would have helped to hold on to Scooter too instead of putting trust in Villar.
  20. Thwarting the Brewers at every opportunity, Theo's grabbed up Wilson along with Avila for Candelario and a low A ball shortstop. If the Brewers are ever going to overcome the Cubs, they better learn to be a bit more aggressive than we've seen this month. Because the next time they get close, it's likely the same thing will happen.
  21. Hader threw 53 pitches Saturday. Would be perfect time to have him replace Guerra in rotation and face St. Louis on Thursday since he probably could go 70-75 pitches next time out. Instead management saying he'll stay in relief which means we likely won't see him at all against the Cardinals. He does certainly have value in relief, but that value is greatly diminished when he's used once a week.
  22. He won 14 games with Reds with an ERA under 4 with the Reds despite allowing 31 HR. First, almost all pitchers with the Reds allow tons of HR. The ones that are still successful are mentally tough and most of the HR allowed are solo shots. I wouldn't empty the system for Straily but I think he'd be a solid addition.
  23. Why would they trade a controllable quality starter like Davies at this point in time? Clancy, Suter has done enough to stay in the rotation when Anderson returns. They don't need to deal Davies to clear up a spot.
  24. this may help explain today's roster move. at any rate, it puts the team back to a five-man bench. probably will go back to four once matt garza comes off the disabled list. The question isn't whether they need a backup CF, by why Nieuwenhuis? My guess is Villar is on the way out as part of a deal, necessitating the need for Perez to primarily be platoon partner with Sogard at 2B and Braun's backup in LF. That would limit Counsell's double switch options.
