  1. A team should have an obligation to play the game if weather permits which it did. It's not the old days. Many tickets are bought on the secondary market days in advance often by people from out of town. Now those folks are high and dry. Sure they can try and resell them but Thursday afternoon games aren't in as big of demand as weekends are.
  2. Almost all of the top teams have top level SS, so the market for rental of Cozart should be pretty soft unless Russell continues to struggle in Chicago. If the price is low, having another veteran bat with a good glove in the lineup for the stretch might be a pretty savvy move. Arcia is still "the guy" going forward obviously but if's he's still around .225 come All Star break and the Brewers are right there in the hunt, I'd certainly think about it. Plus taking Cozart off the Reds who the Brewers play 9 times in August/Sept. would not be a bad thing either.
  3. It's all in the home team's hands until the game starts. It's been abused before and will be again.
  4. I'm 5 miles west of O'Hare. Rain stopped for good here just after 1. They could have delayed the start by 30 minutes and been completely dry the rest of the day with temps 10-15 degrees, warmer than yesterday. Made no sense other than the Cubs needing to rest their bullpen arms. That's the real reason the game was postponed.
  5. The Brewers sent their starting 2B down in May 2015 and their 2016 opening day starter down in June 2016. It shouldn't matter what they did the previous year or what you anticipated them doing before the season. You have to carry your weight at this level and Villar's not. Villar has about 50 more AB's than Grandal. It's one thing when a guy like Aaron Hill in 2016 was hitting a lot of line drives and under .200. Eventually those start to fall in. But Villar, with the exception of the occasional bomb, still strikes out a lot and is making a lot of weak contact.
  6. Do you think the Brewers will option Arcia in favor of Sogard?! Not at this point no I would not expect that but it's an option (no pun intended). Sogard playing LF yesterday was not a good sign for Franklin.
  7. Hader definitely would provide something the pen lacks, a lefty power arm even if they envision him starting in the not too distant future. Woodruff should remain a starter. He's ahead of Espino in the pecking order already but they just needed a spot start.
  8. I don't think it's a big deal anymore. When a player on the 40 man is optioned, it's not like being sent to Siberia. He's in touch with Brewer staff and teammates and can follow the big league club's every move and knows he could be back at any time.
  9. Rent Zack Cozart? Most contenders are well set at SS which weakens his market. Arcia's the future but Cozart could provide a boost for the stretch and provide a big immediate upgrade.
  10. He'll go back down and likely be a footnote to this season but as long as he's doing well in AAA, he'll stick on the 40 man and worst case he'll be back Sept.
  11. Does Villar have options left? Seriously, when Braun is activated they'll just option Espino back down but who goes when Guerra is activated a few days later?
  12. Sogard has zero strikeouts and 4 BBs in 22 PA. Nieuwenhuis had 15 K's and 4 BBs in 30 PA. That's a serious offensive upgrade off the bench.
  13. Perez will get as many OF starts as he got before Braun went on DL. Santana runs hot and cold. Broxton needs a day here and there too. Thames will get more rest than he did when he was on fire. Sogard is going to see a lot of middle infield action. Villar is still the starter at 2B but his time as an everyday fixture might be done unless he gets on a big time roll. Sogard earned his place on this roster. Note his zero K's in 17 AB's. Contrast that with what Nieuwenhuis did when he was around. The bench on this team is now a major strength. Franklin could be odd man out, and even he's not been terrible.
  14. But what's the proof of this? I don't buy that at all. Neither do I.
  15. When a journeyman like Eric Sogard shows up and literally carries the team for a week, you know something special is happening. It doesn't happen often. Scott Fletcher came out of obscurity in 1992 with big hit after big hit. That was before wild card but they scared the bejeebers out of Toronto that year.
  16. Eric Byrnes said on MLB tonight that he expects this Brewer team to be in the battle for a playoff spot in September. He just gushed about what they are doing. Of course he gives tons of credit to his former teammate Counsell. Then they had a graphic up with "Counsell' s Castoffs"
  17. But he's a key part of a first place team a quarter into the season and rebuilds guarantee nothing. The object of rebuilds is to build a contender that can sustain it for few seasons. Well right now they are contending and almost the entire roster is under team control for 2 more years. Can't believe I'm saying this but if they are contending in July and Garza is still pitching well, they need to keep him. Then after the season, they can pick up his option and see what his market is this winter.
  18. Interesting decisions if they decide to keep Sogard up when Braun and Guerra are activated. Do they go back to 7 man pen and who's the odd man out? Feliz? Is there a team out there desperate enough to claim him and take on his salary? Or do they option Arcia or DFA Franklin?
  19. I've got money on the over of 70.5!
  20. Without either they are a first place team a quarter into the season.
  21. Peralta could give the pen a huge boost. Tons of top relievers failed as starters. He'll get one maybe two more starts before Guerra returns. Anderson is who is is, a guy who battles but not an innings eater. In the end he'll provide 175 or so innings with an ERA around 4-4,50. For a 4th or 5th starter, that's fine.
  22. I'll grant you Villar's defense has improved but his hitting isn't where it needs to be. Is Villar's upside in 2017 what Villar did last year? Sogard spent almost his entire major league career playing in Oakland, with 3 times the foul territory of any other park. His WAR per B-R from 2013-2015 when he was a semi-regular were a respectable 1.9, 0.6, 1.0. So that puts his ceiling at 2.0 WAR. Villar through a quarter of the season is -0.2 and he's leading the NL in strikeouts. Sogard is a plus defender too. Nobody thinks Sogard is a long term option at 2B, but until he cools he should be getting playing time from Villar who still looks completely messed up.
  23. Hmmm....Villar struggling (again) and Sogard soaring.
  24. Interesting "buy low" type target the Brewers should be considering. However, I'm just not convinced that Minor is an upgrade over anyone in our current rotation, let alone adding him to block innings from some of our AAA starters that are ready. He reminds me of Brandy Beachy and would have made some sense where the Brewers where at rebuilding stage a year ago. I don't expect much of anything out of him anymore and feel he's at the crossroads of his career. I'm not sure I'd even pluck him of the waiver wire to be honest. In a similar vein, I think the Brewers are a year or even two early on going after a controllable pitcher like Quintana. Just not the right time yet, IMO. Minor is a bullpen rental. He's a FA after this year. He's been very good out of Royals pen.
  25. Brewers get: Quintana White Sox get : Hader Phillips Ortiz Diaz
