  1. To me Arcia has never looked overmatched at the plate. I'm confident he'll hit. He's got the tools to be an offensive force. Batting in the 8 spot is tough.
  2. the brewers have lost a degree of flexibility with relievers on the 40-man with their transactions this month. the only relievers currently on the 25-man that can be optioned are two players who have yet to allow an earned run. jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) neftali feliz (2, but with service time, able to refuse optional assignment) jared hughes (0) corey knebel (1) jhan marinez (0) tommy milone (0, currently in the starting rotation) carlos torres (0) already optioned, but can be recalled at any point during the season (requires a 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless replacing an injured player): tyler cravy taylor jungmann (is now being stretched out as a starter) brent suter all other optioned pitchers on the 40-man are either starters or recovering from an injury. I don't see a serious issue. Both Marinez and Drake have to perform or they'll get DFA'd making room for a AAA arm not currently on the 40 man. The other 5 look pretty solid right now and Counsel has confidence of in any of those 5 to hold a lead.
  3. Impact of defense in LF is minimal and provides very little overall value. See Kyle Schwarber.
  4. Nelson and Peralta have always had pretty high ceilings. If this is the year they put it together simultaneously for a full season it changes the outlook for this team dramatically. Add in a career year for Anderson and who knows what they can do. They'll need Guerra back healthy and Davies to settle in and some contribution from the likes of Garza or a young arm too but strong starting pitching can take a team a long way.
  5. If Barnes and Knebel continue to perform like they have the first week, they'll easily top 70 wins. Villar may make 30 errors and fan 200 times and that will be hard to overcome though. Why is it that its too early to tell on everyone, 8 games into the season, small sample size, nothing to worry about with guys like Perez and his .154 OBP, but for Villar all the small samples matter? Because he led all of baseball in errors last year and most were the same kind he's making this year? In other words, not position specific.

  7. Right, and we heard all winter how the Brewer defense would be tightened up with the move of Villar to 2B. Seeing is believing. Ability to make occasional great defensive plays doesn't make one a great defensive player if you don't make the routine plays virtually all the time. Ortega's .949 fielding percentage at SS does not say "above average defense" defense to me nor do his 116 career errors in under 500 games.
  8. I don't see them moving any of Davies, Peralta, Anderson or Nelson out of the rotation unless one is just awful. Davies started like this last year too so I think it's just a matter of time when he'll settle it. That doesn't mean that Garza can't win a spot or force them to a 6 man rotation with a strong 5-6 starts, but it's going to take more than he's shown the last couple years. Mediocre won't cut it.
  9. 1-6 are overreaction. 7 is truth. Village's defensive issues stem from concentration lapses. Moving him will have zero effect. Can't give up on Perez or Broxton. Perez won VEL batting title. He smoked one to C.F. that was caught yesterday. He'll be fine. Davies is slow starter. This is better than a 70 win team.
  10. Braun had back tightness not pain. No need to push him the first week of the season. If they were contenders I would bet he'd be out there almost every day. Preserving his body now so he's productive in 2 years makes sense.
  11. You guys that didn't appreciate Gennett need some perspective. Is he a core player for a contender? No. Is he solid complimentary player that has been consistently productive? Absolutely. Scooter plays to the best of his ability. He's not a showboat. He was only asked to play one position. Villar has proven he can't play SS or 3B. The jury is still out at 2B. He swings for the fences to pad his stats in situations where a HR isn't needed. As a result he strikes out a ton. Despite his size Scooter can generate plenty of bat speed too but he'll slap one to LF to drive in a big run like he did on numerous occasions in a Brewer uniform plus he was popular in the community.
  12. I agree somewhat but it's case by case too. Why start a possible ace like Hader's clock this year on a bad team? Now, guys like Woodruff and Lopez make zero sense to me why they're not getting the call up to replace a few of these bums. Your comment on Hader is eye-opening. They aren't a good team because they don't have guys like Hader. Final touches on development for talented players occurs in the major leagues not facing inferior hitters in the minor leagues. Hader is one of the guys expected to take this team from bad to good. How is he going to do that if you wait for the team to get good first? Doesn't make sense. Besides, they only need his services for a few starts now, and he can just be optioned back when Guerra returns.
  13. I still don't get the issue with starting the clock on a pitcher especially for guys 23-25. What percentage of guys who come up to start ever get to FA as a reliable healthy consistent starter? The 23-25 year old guys are often at the cusp of their primes which often are ages 25-28. It's a very small percentage that don't fall by the wayside 6 years down the road as they reach 30. Hader is 23. Woodruff is 24. You avoid starting the clock on a guy like Ortiz, but not on Hader or Woodruff or Lopez. Starting the arby clock should only come into play for very young and extremely talented pitchers, and surefire core everyday players. Those instances are rare.
  14. If those 3 continue to do well, Guerra returns around Memorial Day and Davies gets in his groove, Hader won't be needed, but after Memorial Day, he should become the number one alternative to injury or poor performance. Then they'll see where they are in July and there are any number of trade scenarios to free a spot for him or another young guy. Of course if they do really well, that changes a lot of things.
  15. Not a prospect but a guy I think we'll see in Milwaukee sooner or later this year is Andrew Barbosa, the big intimidating lefty reliever now at Colorado Springs. I saw him a couple times on tv this spring in Arizona and he looks like he can help.
  16. Peralta, Anderson and Nelson combined for the following line in their first starts against probably the top two offenses in the NL: 17 IP, 10 Hits, 2 ER, 5 BB. 17 Ks. And supposedly these guys all came to Arizona to compete for a spot with the likes of Garza and Milone? Okay, one start a season does not make, but Peralta and Anderson were both very good in the 2nd half last year and Nelson had a fine two months before losing his confidence. Point is all 3 of these guys are capable starting pitchers, their career ups and downs notwithstanding and probably were penciled (or should have been) in the rotation before they went to Maryvale. Assuming Guerra comes back healthy by late May and Davies gets back in his groove, there certainly will be no room for Garza past Memorial Day especially if Hader shows he's ready if needed.
  17. He drives me nuts. He seems to do something stupid every game. I know it's game 3, but I'm talking about last year as well he would do some pretty boneheaded stuff. Seems? Professional sports requires focus. Villar doesn't seem capable of keeping his focus.
  18. Yeah they have guys versatile enough to stink at several positions.
  19. When he gets through one game without costing his team a win with a bad defensively play, a mental lapse or a boneheaded baserunning mistake I see no reason to "take a breath".
  20. ...and what is the point of getting rid of Scooter, then adding another one? Agree but worse is that Scooter has been a much more productive hitter than Franklin so only explanation is they wanted to save a couple million. I'm okay with the move as Franklin did pretty well off the bench last year but sure seems like an admission they were hasty and cheap waiving Scooter.
  21. That's not the point really. Judging from Cravy's comments, he was told specifically it was a competition and turns out it wasn't or both he and Scahill would have been on the opening day roster. That speaks to trust and when any employees can't trust their bosses, trouble ensues.
  22. Who sits? Arcia needs to play everyday, Shaw had two doubles, yesterday and Villar is our lead off hitter that smoked a ball and worked a walk late in the game. The OF is right handed heavy. 1B maybe if Aguilar wasn't on the team but even there I want to see Thames play. We paid him, now play him. Villar has fanned 4 times now in 6 PA
  23. They can at least bring up an extra bat until that spot in the rotation comes up then replace him with Hader to start, not Milone. Wren fits that role perfectly. Not only is he LH, he's a contact guy on a team starved for them.
  24. In other news, Scooter had 2 run HR in his first game as Red. The team moved Villar to 2B and acquired Shaw because in their minds that made them better right now. If they are trying to lose, why do that. They let Scooter go because they didn't want to pay a measly $2.5 million for a bench bat despite one of the lowest payrolls in the game.
