  1. You just knew something was going to happen when Counsell preached patience, for struggling hitters earlier this week. Guessing Surer will simply go back down when Garza is activated. Milone was solid vs. Cubs on Wednesday. Should have been allowed to go another inning
  2. I strongly disagree with the mentality of keeping a guy just because we can afford him. I'm not arguing that we should trade him, but we need more of a reason to keep a guy beyond just being financially able to. Okay, here's one. Braun is still one of the permier bats in all of baseball, and should be for next couple seasons at worst. Nobody they are likely to acquire in a deal or they currently have in the minors is likely to replace his production until 2019 at the earliest but more likely 2020 if at all. If they want any chance of competing before 2020, they should hold on to Braun. Certainly if someone knocks them out with an offer, ok, but the names discussed to this point aren't in that category.
  3. He hasn't messed with the rotation and lo and behold it's now being led be 3 guys in the prime of their careers. If Guerra comes back strong why can't this roster compete for a wild card? Then I wake up and there is another Braun to Dodgers report? That's what frustrates me. The system has largely been rebuilt. The lineup today isn't bad. No need to tank now. Even Joe Maddon mentioned that the Cubs have played 3 really good teams including the Brewers who he said were "vastly improved". Briggs must be a politician. He can spin anything to make himself sound right. I express my opinion and I've been a baseball fan for nearly 60 years. You are free to disagree at any time, but personal attacks should be off limits on here. I take a lot of them because I don't always follow the latest herd mentality thinking. But attacks aren't going to affect how I view the game and this franchise. Sorry if that upsets your sensibilities that someone has a different opinion.
  4. Outside of Braun, the Brewers have no OF who's proven over an entire season so theoretically both RF and CF are up for grabs to whoever can prove worthy. Broxton's struggling big time right now but reality is that he probably has until end of May to get going at which time I'm sure Brinson gets a call.. Nieuwenhuis? I couldn't believe he was handed a position without competition this spring. So far, he's contributed nothing. Why not take a look at Phillips if not find a veteran who might be available? Neither could be worse than Kirk.
  5. Funny how Counsell can appreciate John Jay fouling off pitches and never hesitate to run Nieuwehuis out there as a late inning pinch hitter when he's having trouble making any contact. You get what you pay for and Brewers aren't willing to spend even a little to bolster a bench with a proven major league bat.
  6. As one who has dismissed Milone, I must say after seeing him in person today handle the Cubs with relative ease, he is winning me over. He broke Bryant' s bat not once but twice. There was really no reason to pull him after 5 innings. Milone is a soft tosser but his 87-88 was beating Hendricks' 84-85.
  7. It's been 14 games - roughly two weeks. If either Broxton or Villar had this kind of run offensively in July no one would even notice. But since it's April and you see the 1 at the beginning of their batting average it stands out much more. You are kidding right? Villar is 8 for 60 and that wouldn't be noticed in July? If he were hitting say .280 through 350 ABs and went 8 for 60, his average would drop to .259. At the start of the season, Villar was a .285 hitter as a Brewer with a .369 OBP. His "small sample" slump have dropped those numbers to .271 and .355, not insignificant drops. Broxton is 5 for 38 with 19 K's. That would be noticed any point in the season especially for a guy with a history of contact issues early in his career.
  8. I heard Anthony Rizzo say that he's not been tested since routine test at the start of spring training. Kind of surprised they aren't testing more (either that or the skeptic in me thinks MLB doesn't want to kill the Cubs feel good moments by nailing one of their heroes) but maybe they'll get more guys by giving them a false sense of security.
  9. Truer words never spoken. I the meantime, how about a CF platoon of Phillips and Perez and Broxton back to AAA and Kirk to oblivion?
  10. They picked up Franklin who is a better version of Scooter. Not sure why you keep complaining about this. http://www.memesandteens.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/boomroasted.jpg But in all seriousness, Ender is correct. Franklin career: .218/.286/.374 Gennett career: .279/.317/.425 On what planet is Franklin a better version of Scooter based on actual major league production? While were at it, what's better, .279/.317/.425 or .254/.329/.401? The latter are Villar's career numbers. Old time Brewer fans might remember one Pedro Garcia who also played 2B in the 1970's. Garcia was 2nd in the AL ROY voting in 1973. But his career faltered after that. Villar reminds me of Garcia. I know for some of you the truth hurts so that's why when I bring it up you all react. Go ahead. Take your shots. I'm doing all I can to keep from mentioning Khris Davis.
  11. They could go back to 13 pitchers temporarily and DFA Nieuwenhuis. If they thought he'd clear waivers and they could get him back, then you DFA Marinez.
  12. I don't think so. Davies had a bad April last year. His start Sunday was better than the numbers showed. Garza's strictly filler till Guerra is healthy. Milone will likely get rocked by Cubs again and will be DFA'd sooner rather than later.
  13. Villar's settled down defensively, but he's not hitting a lick and not getting on base. Too many of Thames' HR have been solo shots. Better question: Truth or overreaction: Villar was a one year wonder and will never produce offensively close to his 2016 season. My answer is truth. He won't be this bad all year of course but I don't see him coming to close to his 2016. Broxton's struggles at the plate are less alarming only because Brinson's waiting in the wings. Here's the question though: Truth or overreaction: Brinson will be up playing CF by June 15th. I'm on the fence. They need much better production from CF than they're getting from Broxton/Kirk. But they could stick Perez out there and delay Brinson until All Star break.
  14. Don't overlook Barbosa's 2 hitless innings with 5 K's. He might just be the lefty bullpen arm they need in Milwaukee. Interesting prospect. He's 29 and has K'd a lot of guys in his career but as is typical of hard throwers that can't quite make the jump he's walked a lot of guys too. Seems like last season he was able to find the zone a bit more often. Hope that continues. There's a lot of guys with lesser resumes who've gotten a shot at some point. Kind of surprising that Barbosa has barely pitched above AA. Sure his walk rate has been a bit high, but never outrageous and his WHIP and K rate are fine and quite good at AA.
  15. Can anyone explain how Kirk Nieuwenhuis has a major league job and Angel Pagan does not? Ok Pagan was hoping for regular's money and he did fail a physical last month with Orioles. But are Brewers in such dire straits with their payroll that they can't at least offer him what they saved by unloading Gennett?
  16. You also wanted to DFA half the team because of bad starts. Nieuwenhuis shouldn't be DFA'd? Ok maybe not. Yet. I'll give him 60 plate appearances. If he has 25 or more K's and fewer than 10 hits, he should be gone.
  17. Why don't we enjoy players wearing Brewer uniforms doing well instead of seeing them as trade chips? It goes without saying players who perform well have value. Finding replacements or fair return is not so easy. While it looks promising, the returns for Gomez and Lucroy have not yet made an impact in the majors unless you count Santana who's biggest impact was prompting the trade of one of the best sluggers in the game for 2 less than sure thing minor leaguers.
  18. Don't overlook Barbosa's 2 hitless innings with 5 K's. He might just be the lefty bullpen arm they need in Milwaukee.
  19. Nobody expects him to hit .163 but unless he stops swinging for the fences every time up, his K rate will remain unacceptable and he'll be lucky to hit over .230. Counsell gives everyone else days off. It's time he does the same with Villar. They made their bed with him when they said goodbye to Scooter. Luckily he turned down the deal though and they do still have alternatives on the roster and in their system.
  20. Been about a year now since my first post advocating Thames signing. You're welcome.
  21. For player with his talent, the only way he reaches his ceiling as a hitter is to be facing the best. The other factor at play is a team like the Brewers absolutely cannot have all their top young talent with the same expiration date. Then what do you do? Brewers will obviously look to lock him up in a year or two with a multi year deal, and they'll have the payroll at a level where they can do that, not just with him.
  22. Given the choice of Arica or Addison Russell for the long haul, I'm taking Arcia. Seriously. Arcia runs better and is a tad more athletic. Eventually he'll hit for average too. Russell right now has the power edge but that's more because Arcia hasn't grown into his body like Russell has. I laughed out loud when I heard Len Kasper predict Russell for a string of gold gloves on the radio the other day. Russell isn't the best defensive SS in the division much less the NL.
  24. Why not? The guy has dominated in the upper minors where he closed also. Might just benefit from fresh start with a new big league team.
  25. Since like Frank Thomas, Garrett Cooper is a big tall 1B who played at Auburn, can we start calling him Big Hurt II?
