  1. If the Brewers are close they should go and get Mike Minor from the Royals. Maybe even.take Soria off their hands too if they pick up some salary.
  2. They were just as shorthanded when Braun was active but not available. BTW, Cooper is not in the lineup for CS tonight and there's now a roster spot open on the 40 man. If it looks like Shaw will be out more than a day or two, they might DL him and bring up Cooper. In the meantime Suter replaces Marinez. Updated...just realized Cooper was placed on 7 day DL earlier today.
  3. Maybe they intend to put Peralta in the pen now and have Suter make a start or two until Guerra returns or perhaps they felt now was the best time to get Marinez through waivers. They could be thinking there's a team out there that would make a minor deal for Marinez too. We just saw a Met team with serious bullpen issues. Peralta's remaining salary for 2017 is about $3.3 million. There are teams out there desperate enough for starting pitching that it would not be a shock for one of them to claim him.
  4. I don't expect the kind of moves made in 08 for Sabathia or Grienke where they unloaded top prospects, but if this team continues to bang away, I sure could see them acquiring a couple bullpen pieces, notably a reliable lefty to give them a shot. The rotation should get a boost with return of Guerra and they have arms in AAA that could boost the rotation.
  5. What's exciting is that the offense is coming from players blossoming at one time, Shaw, Broxton,, Perez, Santana, Pina, Thames, Aguilar, Bandy who are all controllable. Maybe, just maybe these guys are very good. Keith Hernandez who knows hitting, was raving about Perez all weekend even daring to say he looks a bit like Miguel Cabrera at the plate. Perez has been around Cabrera and no doubt learned some things. Pina has looked like a natural hitter from day one. It's astounding it took so long for him to get to majors.

  7. Bandwagon is filling up quickly! That one today ranks right up there with my all time favorite games. Awesome!
  8. They are 2nd in the entire NL in runs scored with a roster full of position players who are all controllable through at least 2019 and with bats in the minors to replace any that falter down the road. What's to rebuild? Pitching sure, but all teams have to keep developing and acquiring pitching (see 2017 Cubs) to stay on top.
  9. Or have a good closer on the next contending team? We can't just keep flipping players non stop. At some point you have to hold valuable assets to make your team good. This is currently a .500 ballclub competing. If this team is very close or above .500 you could think about competing next year quite easily considering we have a lot of talent almostnready for the show and lots of freed up money. I get that relievers can have a lot of value, but if we want to win lots of games a good bullpen is so important and trying to piece one together is a risky business. I'm on your side, but if the market gets hot again and Gleyber Torres/Adam Warren type packages (obviously Knebel isn't Chapman but you get the point) come flying in I wouldn't think twice. Bullpen pitches are generally up and down year to year unless they're truly elite. The Brewers are at the point in the rebuild where they won't sell off assets unless it's to make room for the prospects who are upgrades. Knebel is the least likely to be dealt.
  10. Hold on to good players and try to win? What a radical idea!
  11. An argument could be made that Feliz is saving wear and tear on pen by making sure game ends in 9 one way or the other.
  12. Only games I miss are when playing golf interferes. Now that I'm retired I see weekday afternoons too often in person. I'll tune out when the game gets out of hand on the negative side. I don't stay with West coast games too often beyond 5th or 6th inning. I watch from first pitch. Weekends I switch back and forth between game and golf with some Nascar.

  14. Tristan Archer officially on my watch list for callup at some point this season. Cooper on a RBI pace that's astounding.
  15. Puke. Seriously? The Brewers have two full-time OFs on the roster, and they call up hipster glasses? Dude with a career .609 OPS over >1300 PAs? Sogard frees up Perez to be a full time outfielder for the time being. Hey we all would like to see young guys get a chance but for the short term they are going with a veteran who is off to a good start. It's not that big a deal.
  16. Counsell has affinity for bench players and the two guys in struggling the most in the Brewer lineup just happen to play the same positions that Sogard plays. Don't be shocked if he gets some starts. Sogard has more walks than strikeouts. He can be useful.
  17. There's your veteran grit. I think it signals Perez gets steady work in LF. Maybe Sogard gets a start at SS against a tough RHP? Hard to argue that Sogard wasn't putting up good numbers. Anyone recall if his deal included an opt-out?
  18. Lets get creative. Regardless of who's replacing him, Braun's absence is significant offensively. Arcia is struggling now too (5 for his last 33). Why not DL Braun, option Arcia, and call up Rivera and Brinson? Play Perez at SS to keep his bat in lineup and have Brinson leadoff and play LF? Then move Villar down to the 8th spot? Use Rivera for double switches and late inning defense at SS. Once Braun is back you can also return a hopefully more confident Arcia who's had a couple weeks seeing AAA pitching. Brinson gets the benefit of hitting ahead of Thames or stick the hot Broxton at number 2, Thames at 3, then Shaw followed by Santana/Perez in either order.
  19. The guys on the 40 man (Phillips, Brinson, Cordell, Reed) have all used an option for the year already, so it doesn't matter how often you bounce them up and down this year. They have just 39 on the 40 man as it is, so adding Wren who'd have a full complement of options at age 26, would not be an issue at all. Heck, he could bounce back and forth for the next 3 seasons ala Logan Schafer.
  20. they have no bench as it is, i can't see it. that would mean 3 bench players. i would be shocked. Agreed. No way they go with a 14 man pitching staff and a 3 man bench. They have more bats to choose from at this point anyway. A case can be made for 6 or 7 different bats. In fact as soon as the starters start going deeper consistently, they need to go back to a 5 man bench and one less arm.
  21. I'd describe Santana as an adequate (barely) starting corner OF. He's streaky offensively as are many barely adequate regulars. With the OF talent in system, Brewers can aim higher. Maybe those guys will prove to be just adequate too but you don't block them with Santana.
  22. This team needs more veteran grit. Kirk provides that. He could be the missing piece that holds our team together. Don't fight it. I'm all for veteran grit but Nieuwenhuis is not that guy. He's never been more than a fringe major leaguer. DeJesus or Sogard would provide more grit than Kirk.
  23. Time to put Peralta in the pen where I think he can flourish. Brewer relievers in general (not just Feliz) have a hard time getting strike one on anybody. I think Peralta would be a bulldog in late innings. For an inning he could work at 96-98 with a formidable slider.
  24. Changes every week. Nelson looked to be spiraling back to his late 2016 form but has righted himself. I think potentially he'll have the most trade value of any of their starters, but he could be back in minors too. My guess on August 1: Guerra, Anderson, Davies, Woodruff, Hader. Peralta will be converted to late inning reliever, Nelson traded, and Garza given away.
