  1. Lawrie's career OPS is .715 and I was cherry picking Gennett? Besides Lawrie is hurt and wasn't playing anyway. Why add another guy who could take AB's away from an emerging player like Perez anyway?
  2. Agreed. Guys of his ilk are always out there.
  3. Free Lucas Erceg.
  4. Uecker was heaping praise on Perez today and as if on cue, Hernan blasted one prompting him to say, "how can you keep this guy out of the lineup?" My thoughts exactly. He went on to mention how every time they see a scout from the Tigers, all they ever ask is how Hernan is doing. Many in the Tiger organization knew the kind of talent he had. Melvin made a number of impactful waiver claims. Perez may turn out the best. Counsell has to get Perez in the lineup at least 5 or 6 days a week.
  5. Strongest competition will come from the Domincans.
  6. Gennett's right now by far the best LH bench bat the Brewers have and he's a better hitter than Lawrie. Lawrie's OPS from 2012 to 2016: .729, .712, .722, .706, .723 Gennett's OPS since 2013: .834, .754, .675, .728 Beside he's a much better teammate and he's healthy and a bit younger. Replacing Gennett with Lawrie would be ludicrous. Lawrie pedigree?? Seriously? He hasn't had one full season as good as Gennett's best full year.
  7. My guess is the Red Sox double down and go after Quintana using Swihart as key piece. White Sox drafted Zach Collins as their catcher of the future but he has position flexibility and they could really use a young catcher the next 2 or 3 years.
  8. I don't think the Brewers believe Perez' season was an aberration after he went on to lead the VWL in hitting. Teams not as familiar with him aren't likely to value him higher so why not just keep him?
  9. Nothing sickened this old Milwaukee Brave fan more than to see photos of Warren Spahn and Eddie Mathews plastered on the wall at Turner Field. Spahn never wore an Atlanta uniform and Mathews did only briefly. Not to relive the whole horrendous stealing of the franchise, but stuff like this just pours salt in the wounds that never heal. A lot of old Milwaukee Braves fans had allegiances before the Braves arrived and got over their leaving, but for us baby boomers born between 1947 and 1956, the Braves were our first baseball love and Mathews our first hero. It still hurts. By the way, the Burdette honor was long overdue.
  10. Suppose a lot goes right for this team and heading into the All Star Break they are boasting a record of 50-40 and are within a game or two if not among the top two wild card teams? Impossible you say? Perhaps, but I'd give this scenario at least a 5% chance of happening. This exact scenario played out in the 70's when for three straight seasons from 73-75, the Brewers were at or near the top of the division heading into July with lesser talent relative to the division than they have now. Then what do you do if you're David Stearns and Mark Attanasio? There's 3 options of course: 1. 2021-2023 be damned, lets go for it this year and 2018-2020 and go make a deal to get Quintana with a couple of your top prospects, keeping in mind Quintana is controllable through 2020. This assumes the young controllable guys in your lineup this year are performing very well. 2. Don't trust what your seeing and keep focused on the 3-5 years down the road and deal off as many assets as you can for more prospects. 3. Maybe let the season play out with no major moves, other than maybe dealing off a non-performing asset or making a swap of a veteran for another veteran that might help the final couple months. The Brewer fan base has for the most part accepted the rebuild, but success on the field will create excitement and it will be tough for fans if they surrender from a position of what for 90 games has been a fun season.
  11. By then his 5 and 10 rights will have kicked in. I don't think he's interested in going anywhere. This team isn't light years away from being competitive and he sees it. No matter how far out you look, the Brewers are never going to get the where the Cubs are now. They'll never be able to complement their core with big money FA and they'll never have half their division rebuilding as their core reaches their primes. Competitive on a year to year basis is the realistic goal and they are getting closer. I look for the Brewers to try and deal one or two of their mid-career starters in July assuming they aren't within reach of wild card. That along with eventual trade of Gennett and/or dealing of Feliz is what we should expect between now and end of July.
  12. I believe one spot is Peralta's to lose. Nelson has options and was messed up the entire 2nd half. He has to prove he put those command issues behind him. Will be interesting to see when they use Milone too.
  13. In the long run, his turning this down could be a good thing. It remains to be seen if he can follow up his fine 2016 with another solid year. He needs to cut down on strikeouts, make better decisions on the bases and be solid defensively at 2B. Besides, the Brewers are loaded with middle infielder prospects so why tie up any money now on one guy off one year?
  14. I don't see Texas giving up Mendez and I doubt the Brewers have interest in Guzman after signing of Thames. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if Guzman was on the list of potential PTBNL last year but he struggled so at AAA the Brewers opted for Cordell. Martin's not close to the equivalent of Mendez either. Not sure Texas has to keep Fielder. Doesn't their insurance just kick in and pay off his remaining contract? He's not listed on their roster.
  15. It's not an either/or situation with Broxton and Brinson. Santana has to hold off Brinson as well. If Santana's off to a slow start, Brewers won't hesitate going with both Brinson and Broxton in the same outfield with Braun.
  16. Most scouts project Hader as a number 2 if not a number 1 and he's atop the minors. I'd take Mazara in a heartbeat despite the OF depth in the system. You can deal that depth later for more pitching.
  17. Who's the better hitter, Scooter or Nieuwenhuis? Scooter is. Why not find out if Gennett is serviceable in the OF? Nieuwenhuis' value is his ability to play CF but Perez is an option there too and the number one prospect is a CF. Nieuwenhuis is expendable if they have a better lefty OF bat to fill in. Maybe Gennett is that guy?
  18. You make the offer and hope he accepts and you can cash him in like they did with Gomez and Lucroy who ended up being bargains. If not, he gets what he gets in arbitration and maybe you try again in a couple years. In the meantime, you have a lot better read on your top 2B prospects Diaz and Dubon.
  19. Thornburg does have some injury history so my guess is Red Sox wanted to see him start the year in good health before agreeing to the final piece. If he blows out his elbow in Florida, then maybe the $100 comes into play.
  20. Stearns admitted to McCalvy that the Brewers were keeping tabs on Wieters and had contacted Boras. I think if his price had come down to 1 year $8 million range or 2 year $15 million, the Brewers make that move. It's never a bad idea to get a player who's a potential flip at a reasonable amount. The fact that Brewers have no established player at the position and a very low payroll, it would have made sense. The guys they have could be okay, but it's not like they are top prospects.
  21. Don't have the link but it's all over the net of Hernan's 3 year old son Christopher taking a nice cut and then flipping the bat and his cap! Flip was hilarious, but swing impressive and he's a LH hitter!
  22. Record: 80-82 Playoffs: No Brewers MVP: Thames Brewers Cy Young: Peralta Brewers ROY: Hader First player traded: Gennett Surprise Player: Barnes/Thames Disappointing Player: Shaw World Series: Red Sox over Cubs, Thornburg gets final out fanning Rizzo.
  23. Right. They can't be totally discounted but they'll need Lynn to come back strong, Wacha to bounce back and Wainwright to stop the slide at age 35. Those are some significant ifs. They were counting heavily on Reyes to take some of the pressure off.
  24. I don't know about that. Could they still finish 2nd in the Central? Sure, but I don't see them as strong wild card contenders. They didn't make it last year so their playoff run's been broken.
  25. Potential huge blow to Cardinals who have question marks galore as it is. Beyond Maritnez, they 3 starters coming off seasons with ERA's of 4.62 and up in Wainwright (4.62), Leake (4.69) and Wacha (5.09) to go with Lance Lynn coming off his own TJ surgery. Suddenly by comparison the Brewer rotation not looking so bad.
