  1. You don't want Shaw facing lefties, so I suspect the plan will be a platoon at 3B with Perez.
  2. Stearns hinted they were looking for another LH bat at the Thames news conference so not totally out of the blue.
  3. I really like Thornburg, but this deal shows his value was really high. They couldn't pass it up. They have tons of pieces now to go out and make further deals if they wish.
  4. There's your 3B, Travis Shaw. 29 HR in first 778 major league PA. Hits lefty, a plus. Wasn't much of a hitter in the high minors though so can't be sure this just isn't more infatuation with Boston players. Pennington a nice lottery pick. Dubon makes this deal for me. Great offensive numbers in the minors and just 22. Where this leaves Gennett and Perez who knows? I still see the Brewers picking up a reliever to replace Thornburg. Maybe David Robertson from the Sox for Garza in a salary swap? Maybe they follow through and put Peralta in the pen.
  5. Having to take Cain back to move Braun just to get two decent but unspectacular prospects makes no sense to me.
  6. 'Very good' is definitely a stretch, even during those last 11 healthy starts his numbers were almost completely average for a starter. Garza is a salary dump. Anyone expecting us to receive anything of significance for him, barring a real hot first half in 2017 and then a trade, is going to be very disappointed. Agree. He could be moved this winter but realistically only in a swap of equally bad contracts. Maybe a team will buy into the possibility of his value going up and give a little more. If they do, the Brewers should take it and make some room for a young arm or two to compete for a rotation spot.
  7. They are not stuck with Braun. He's 33 not 38 and the contract for a player of his caliber is very reasonable.
  8. He's been a 2+ WAR player the last 2 seasons and the signing of Thames tells me they are looking to compete as soon as 2018 but I still think they can get him without jeopardizing their longer term future as well. Solarte would be a nice target. Perez or Gennett and Jungmann perhaps? Maybe Nelson as the key piece?
  9. Kind of a surprising non-tender that would be an upgrade. Price?
  10. It's a big deal especially for Latin players, and they do limit the # of innings, but your concerns are not without merit. Hiram Burgos shined in 2013 for Puerto Rico, then broke down physically that year later when Roenicke left him in a game to take a pounding when he was obviously not right. By the way, that's an awesome collection of talent that Venezuela has. My guess is the get the issue over the manager solved.
  11. I added Lopez and Williams as well as knocked Scahil down a few pegs. I did not put him in all three OF spots but I did add him to LF and RF where he probably fits with playing time in those positions. I know a lot of posters hate Niewenhuis but until he's off this team, I cannot see him not getting playing time in CF and RF. He adds that left handedness to the team that you always talk about. Perez made 7 starts in CF last year. I don't think it's likely Brinson makes the team out of spring training unless Braun is traded and no major league OF (ie. Puig or Ethier) comes back in the deal. Most likely they start the season with 4 full time OF (as of now that's Braun, Broxton, Santana, and Nieuwenhuis) plus Perez which is why I'd list him at all 3 spots ahead of the minor league options.
  12. Really impressed with Thames news conference. Great addition and great work by Stearns. Love the fact that Stearns mentioned he was focused on getting a LH presence in the lineup. Many thought that was something to address later on. That indicates they believe the roster is going to be in position to compete, if not in 2017, then sooner than a lot of people think and we'll be less focused on what we can get for our players and more looking for signs they are competing to win.
  13. I think you need to put Perez in all 3 of the OF spots, maybe even ahead of Nieuwenhuis, certainly ahead of Reed and Cordell.
  14. Good perspective on Braun's contract. Braun is still every bit the offensive impact player Cespedes is. This just shows how much of a bargain he is and why if you do trade him, you better get a haul.
  15. Thanks. It's been a while since I hit on a big one. I think the last one was Scotty Po for Carlos Lee deal.
  16. Jung Ho Kang's last 3 seasons in Korea: 2012: .314/.413/.560 .973 25 HR 2013: .291/.387/.489 .876 22 HR 2014: .356/.459/.739 1.198 40 HR Thames last 3 years in Korea: 2014: .343/.422/.688 1.111 37 HR 2015: .381/.497/.790 1.288 47 HR 2016: .317/.425/.676 1.101 40 HR Kang's put up solid major league numbers (.838 OPS), while adjusting to an entirely new culture. Why is it being over optimistic to think Thames can't match what Kang has done and maybe a bit more? Sure the Brewers could have brought back Adam Lind or signed a Brandon Moss or maybe even a Justin Morneau for a year, but they took a shot at a guy who at this stage might be better than those guys and be around a while and I applaud them for it.
  17. Thurston Fluff said: I think 260/340/810 is closer to his ceiling than his floor. He's bigger and stronger with a shorter and more compact swing now compared to 2013. He's quicker to the ball with more whip. Also changed his stance (feet/base) and hand positioning. He looks much better now compared to when he was 24/25yrs old in MLB Thames' numbers were good or even better than Kang's were in Korea and Kang has a major league OPS of .838, and Thames doesn't have to make a cultural adjustment coming back to the States.
  18. Rockies have big hole at 1B. Carter's Coors Field line? A cool .345/.367/.897 with 4 HR in 30 PA. No doubt they'll have interest, just will it be enough for them to want to trade for him rather than risk they'd lose him to another team if they wait until he hits FA.
  19. On April 13, 2016 I posted the following on the transactions rumors forum: "Eric Thames, former major leaguer who's put up incredible numbers in Korea the past couple seasons is a FA after this year. Apparently, he's not only flashing incredible power, with 84 HR combined in 14-15, and a high BA and OBP, but he's also stealing bases and playing some 1B. He's also saying he's considering a return to MLB. Carter's off to a nice start in the power department, and maybe he'll sustain it to the degree where you bring him back (he's under control through 2018) but if not, Thames might be worth a look as a left handed power bat to compliment the newly found power hitter in Gennett, especially if he can play 1B. He'd also be a nice fit if they did happen to trade Braun" Nice to hit on one for once.
  20. Can't minimize the value of sticking a LH power bat into the middle of this heavy RH hitting lineup. His ability to play OF as well could put Nieuwenhuis' job in jeopardy. There's definite upside here, and like reillymcshane points out, if he's a complete bust, it's not that huge of an investment at a time when they are still building. It probably lessens (but doesn't eliminate) the chance Brewers will go out and sign Valbuena so if they trade Gennett, Perez would be in line to play 3B, or if they keep Gennett, Villar will start the year there.
  21. That's less than they would have had to pay Carter to stick around 2 more seasons. If he's more than a 1 WAR per year guy, that's a good investment. He's still in his prime.
  22. Love this move as I had started the Thames thread. He's a LH hitter with pop, something Brewers desperately needed. If you believe the Brewers have a chance to step up as soon as 2018, this kind of move makes a ton of sense. Somewhat of a risk but one worth taking. If he's a semblance of the player he was in Korea, they have added a solid all around bat that will take walks and not strike out 200 times. I assume he can play 1B? If so, he's not blocking any prospects. Certainly explains the non-tender decision on Carter. I can see .275/.350/.475 type of a line, with 25-30 HR.
  23. Now we know the reason they non-tendered Carter. They just signed Eric Thames to a 3 year deal!!!!
  24. Parker and Geltz have both had some major league success and have dominated hitters in high minors. Either or both could be useful this year and not cost anything. Marco Estrada rebounded from a season where he was giving up ton of HR. Maybe Geltz can too with a change of scenery. Walker claim never made any sense. I'm expecting them to focus on a lefty reliever (Tyler Webb?) in Rule 5 if one doesn't come available otherwise.
  25. Yeah I'd rather take a shot at the dartboard with a rule 5 pickup Ah, the Junior Guerra acquisition seemed pointless a year ago as did the claim of Carlos Torres. Both were in their 30's. Both now have trade value. Parker's spot on the 40 man is more secure than a couple others too if they choose to make a rule 5 pick. My guess is they'll add a lefty reliever in rule 5.
