  1. Ah but he was. Elmore's played more games at SS in the big leagues than any other position. Elmore started last year at AAA, and barring a rash of injuries so will Dejesus. Remember Perez and Villar can also play SS. Eventually Brewers wanted Rivera to get some AB's so they brought up Elmore to be the 25th man. Assuming Rivera has one option left, they can do the same thing this year when he needs to get AB's. It's not a given that either make the team if Gennett isn't moved.
  2. Slight upgrade to Elmore.
  3. Let's not discount Montgomery as a starter but depth there could be an issue in 2017 unless they can swing another deal for someone like Archer. Plus, they'll need a replacement for Montgomery in the pen and I'm not sure Duensing is up to it. Lackey sure looked near the end of the road in the postseason too and he's 38.
  4. How do we know they didn't put in a claim on him. I was under the impression they did because we were trying to trade him to them. It was reported at the time that he went unclaimed. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/rosenthals-latest-dodgers-brewers-braun-puig-d-backs.html All the deals involving the Dodgers involved the Brewers taking back almost the entire amount of his contract some of it that's nearly dead money (McCarthy). Dodgers have issues with an inflated payroll as it is. If Braun were a FA, he'd easily get 4 years, $80 million.
  5. Brewers are probably shopping Nelson or Anderson as a package along with Scooter which would free up some of the rotation log jam. Nelson in particular still would have plenty of value. There's plenty of time for more moves and as the season approaches teams will look to plan B and plan C to bolster rotations. The Brewers are looking for a veteran reliever on a short term deal. The amount (and $3.5 million is not going to do it), is irrelevant. Had the Brewers not gotten stellar back end work in 2016 from Jeffress and Thornburg, they are a 95 loss team in 2016. I don't think the goal is to slide further back in 2017 and both of those guys are gone. Hader could easily slide into a late inning lefty relief role while he awaits a rotation spot to open, and maybe one or two of the guys emerge as late inning guys, but taking a shot for $5-7 million on a veteran with a past history of success is a no-brainer. That kind of guy would be gold at the deadline.
  6. reillymcshane hit on it. Prospect rankings are snapshots in time. Players go up and they go down, particularly pitchers but position players as well. Lets wait and see.
  7. Nieuwenhuis can play all 3 OF positions but guess what, so can Perez. Yes Kirk has some pop but he also struggles making contact. It just seems to me that they should be looking for an upgrade who's more of a professional hitter even if that guy is strictly a corner OF.
  8. I'd rather have Braun for $80 million over 4. He's still a Brewer right?
  9. His last 2 minor league starts of 2016 were let's just say impressive: As a St. Lucie Met on 8/29: 7 IP, 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 1 BB, 11 K As Binghamton Met on 9/4: 8 IP, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 2 BB, 5 K For those of you scoring at home, his last 15 pro innings he's allowed 1 Hit and 4 base runners, while fanning 16. Granted he was old for both leagues, but impressive nonetheless. Will be one to watch in Arizona.
  10. Odds are he makes it to Milwaukee at some point in 2017. Wouldn't be a shocker if he was on the opening day roster. Lefties hit just .143/.185/.221 off him in the minor leagues last year. Could have a future as a loogy.
  11. Definitely some solid veteran names on that list to choose from.
  12. They'll get a close look at him this spring and if they like him, they'll try and make a deal but I don't see them keeping him on their 25 man. That back of the bullpen idea's been tried and all it does is set back a prospect's development to the point where most never make it back.
  13. Exactly. Rostering him this year would have precluded him having value down the road with all options used up. If he sticks, more power to him but odds are still pretty good he's back in Brewer system in High A this season where he probably belongs.
  14. Except they kind of can't, because in a few months he'll have full 10/5 rights and will be able to veto any trade. It's not the best situation for the Brewers to be in. I'm of the viewpoint that they need to trade him this off-season (and will likely not get as much as we're hoping) because they don't want to be paying a likely oft-injured, declining Braun 20 mil in his ages 36 and 37 seasons. Braun isn't under contract for his age 37 season and his salary for his age 36 season drops to $17 million. His mutual option for his age 37 season is $15 million with a $4 million buyout. Further despite his occasional days off for minor hurts, he's never had a season of fewer than 564 plate appearances (other than the year he was suspended), and at age 32 he was a 4.4 WAR player. He's averaged 570 plate appearances since turning 30, and it's remained fairly steady for 3 straight years since the suspension. Braun's remaining contract is a bargain even if his production falls slightly each year.
  15. I expect them to deal Blackmon to bolster their pitching and play Desmond in CF. Kind of surprised they haven't been all over Carter. He'd be a monster there.
  16. Rumors were the Rangers were talking to Reds about starting pitching and the Reds are interested in Jeffress. Stearns has hinted he'd listen to offers for a starter and he also said they'd be looking at the reliever market to help fill the void left by Thornburg. Nelson really struggled after Lucroy left. Maybe re-unite them?
  17. He played 13 games at SS in his first season of pro ball as a 20 year old. I have to laugh when people say a guy can only play one position when he's literally never been asked to play anywhere else. I'm pretty certain Gennett is physically able to play other positions as he's first and foremost a baseball player, but he's been a starter at 2B his entire career so playing elsewhere was never a priority. If he's still on the roster when spring training opens, it would behoove them to move him around a bit. His bat would be nice to have in reserve.
  18. Your're assuming Gennett will be the one traded and not Villar who's value is much higher? Why not deal Villar now when his value is high? With the likes of Dubon and Diaz in the system, why risk Villar slumping in 2017? I'm guessing they assessed the market for Gennett and it's lacking.
  19. Why not see what the market is for Villar after his stellar season?
  20. No it doesn't. They might want to keep Gennett in case Arcia struggles out of the gate and they have to move Villar back to short for a while. We're all assuming Arcia's here to stay, but maybe they'll decide to get him more work in AAA. At worst, Gennett becomes a nice late inning PH option from the left side and allows Counsell to do some double switching in the infield. He's not making so much that having him as a bench player is out of the question. That said, I'm a huge Scooter fan myself and feel he's been underappreciated by many.
  21. He's probably 3 years away at best. He figures to be in Appleton's rotation this year so no I don't think Brewers had that in mind necessarily.
  22. Peralta and Hader in the Brewer pen on opening day? Remember Sale spent a year in the White Sox pen. I do like Dubon. Hard finding advanced young hitters that make contact at a high rate like that these days. He's listed at 6 feet, 160 pounds, so my guess is he's got room for 25-30 more pounds and more power as his body matures. He's a guy who could put up some eye-popping numbers at altitude. Heck if Shaw doesn't pan out, maybe Dubon ends up at 3B sooner rather than later.
  23. The question is whether Shaw/Perez is an upgrade over Perez/Gennett. I'm certainly not convinced, Yeah, he's got longer control than Scooter and more power and this allows Villar to move to 2B, but that control will mean nothing if Erceg progresses or he doesn't prove he's at worst a reliable LH platoon bat at 3B. It certainly doesn't help Gennett's value as teams know he doesn't have a regular job with Brewers. We do know that the Brewer bullpen has taken a tremendous hit, and it doesn't look like they are getting back anything close to offsetting that at least in the short term.
  24. Thornburg, perhaps above anyone else on the Brewer roster, was responsible for the 2016 team maintaining respectability. He did not allow a single run to the Cubs, Cards, or Pirates the entire year. Overall vs. division foes, he allowed 1 run in 30 innings. That kind of production lifts the entire team by preventing devastating late game losses. The entire rest of the NL Central is celebrating today.
  25. I think it's basically track record. Tyler has had one great season (but it was a heck of a season). I think if we had held onto Tyler for another 1/2 season - and he did great - he could have gotten a huge return at the trade deadline. But I don't blame the team for making the move now. Relievers are volatile. If Thornburg had tossed a 4.00 ERA in 2017, we'd be blaming ourselves for not trading him earlier. I'm not underwhelmed but I have my doubts about Shaw. He was never a great hitter in the minors and the 2nd half of 2016 brings back memories of Cecchini: .194/.259/.360. Is he another Boston guy who burst on the scene and when pitchers figured him out went downhill fast?
