  1. Also notable that his MLB numbers are pretty bad out of 40 innings one year with the Cubs in 2013. Since then, in limited action, he has been pretty bad. He is an extreme fly ball pitcher who gives up a lot of walks. Though he does strike out a lot of batters and if he is limitting walks he ends up pretty productive. Probably just organization depth for the bullpen with some low upside he pitches well and can be flipped for minimal return. "a lot of walks"?? I wouldn't say 33 BB in 90 major league innings is a huge red flag. He's been very good in AAA for a few seasons including 2016 when he posted a 5-1 SO to walk ratio and fanned 12 per 9 innings in the PCL West. He had 2 bad outings in the majors in 2016, made worse when the relievers who followed him allowed 4 of his runners to score. He allowed just 2 runs in his other 15 outings. He could turn out to be a nice cheap bullpen piece much like Torres was. Kudos to Stearns on the first move of the offseason that improves the 2017 roster, albeit a small one.
  2. Compared to Reed and Walker, I'd much rather have Wren on my 40 man.
  3. I think the Brewers' Farm has finally reached the point where we have to lose some people with potential. You just hope you protect the right ones! How many Rule 5 draftees stick with the drafting team every year? 2-3 tops? Most teams pass on the Rule 5 draft altogether. You can't stash an unlimited number of quality prospects in your system though. Eventually you'll start to lose them and/or their disappointing performance will dictate they are no longer prospects. I would hope they are close to the point where the trading of a quality player off their roster will result in some major league talent back. That was my biggest beef about the timing and the decision on Davis. I could have lived with the Braun to the Dodgers proposal that was out there because it included a major league talent like Puig coming back in the deal.
  4. He says he's healthy and feeling strong. He certainly is worth a minor league deal and a look see in Arizona even though his AAA numbers weren't very good in 2016.
  5. O's signed David Washington to a minor league deal. Missed opportunity.
  6. Why all the angst about 3B? As long as Gennett is still here, Villar will play there. If Scooter gets traded, Perez can play there. Yes he's great as a super utility, but with all the OF they have, and Arcia and Villar in the middle infield, the opportunities for him might not be as great as they were in 2016. Villar was shaky there defensively but he should be more comfortable there in 2017. They have a lot more holes than 3B on this roster. They need lefty bullpen help. They need to unload Garza. They could use an upgrade at catcher. They could use a lefty hitting power bat better than Nieuwenhuis to do some platooning in OF and spell Carter at 1B. Valbuena would not be a bad FA signing either as he can play some 1B too. The future at 3B, beyond 2018, is Erceg, but if he doesn't pan out, it's not like they can't acquire one somewhere.
  7. They'll never go back to 154 games. Teams like Brewers who rely on gate receipts as a larger percentage of the revenue stream especially won't give up 4 home dates. That's significant revenue loss and why teams never play true doubleheaders any more.
  8. Agreed. He's one of the guys that really stood out to me, and not just because he's 6'5, 260. Given that he's just 25, there's a chance he might get a major league contract because he would still have three options. If I were the Brewers, I would consider it. I'd rather take a shot on Washington than continue to hang on to Goforth, or maybe even Blazek. Would have more value on the 40 man than Reed at this point too wouldn't he? No knock on Reed, but they are loaded with RH hitting OF but are short on lefty power and 1B.
  9. Aaron Hill's had 5 season with better OPS than Plouffe's best year. His .780 OPS with the Brewers last year was better than any of Plouffe's seasons too. Plouffe is a not a 30 HR threat. He slugged over .450 once and that was several years ago. I like what Perez gives for major league minimum.
  10. Perez looks capable of putting up typical Plouffe numbers. Now if Braun is traded and no OF comes back, I could see Perez in the OF initially. Even him at 3rd is predicated on Gennett being traded and that's not a done deal either.
  11. I seriously doubt either are taken. Coulter's status as a former #1 pick is rather meaningless at this point. Taylor played his way down the prospect charts.
  12. When you are fanning 200 times in AA and AAA, that doesn't bode well for major leagues. Maybe they see a guy who can make the same adjustment Broxton made.
  13. His strikeout rate is alarming even by Brewer standards, and he's yet another RH bat on a roster full of them.
  14. "Multiple" teams don't seem worried about his elbow. He doesn't have a ton of innings on that arm. If a team goes crazy sure, but his value will skyrocket if he repeats his 2016 numbers. It's worth the risk getting another year out of him, and evaluating not only him but where this team is a year from now. Landscape could be a lot different.
  15. Very analytic-friendly signing. In 426.2 AAA IP (85 G, 66 starts), 1.188 WHIP, 7.8-to-1.9 K/BB per nine IP *** VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS via MiLB.com *** Wouldn't be surprised to see Espino pitch for Panama in the spring's WBC. Updated the initial post in this thread to reflect that Espino is Rule 5 draft-eligible. Hard to believe that Espino with over 1,200 reasonably effective minor league innings hasn't had a sniff of the majors. I guess shows that 5'10" pitchers get overlooked. Those 2016 numbers were very good. Maybe he's this year's Guerra?
  16. Morton just signed a 2 year deal with Astros, no terms disclosed. Brewers just need to be patient and see what's out there around the end of January and add a veteran arm or two on minor league deals to compete in ST. Signing guys like Morton to major league deals just puts another guy in front of a young arm that could be ready.
  17. Every team needs power bats from both sides. You want one in AAA just in case your major league team outperforms expectations and is missing that piece. The Brewers proved they have a desire for that type of player when they promoted Wilkins last year, even though they are in a rebuild. They also wanted to see more power out of Flores and the one thing they do like about Nieuwenhuis is his occasional power surges. There's plenty of available AB's in AAA for two 1B/OF/DH types. Preference would be on RH and one LH. David Washington and Garrett Cooper were born 35 days apart.
  18. David Washington is the guy I'd target. Will be just 26, and bats lefthanded. Basically same age that Broxton was when he was acquired last winter. Posted an .877 OPS at AAA in 2016 (.913 vs. RHP). Had 30 HR. Substantial experience at both 1B and corner OF. Strikes out a lot, but power is enough that you can live with it if it transfers to majors. Longshot but not impossible for him to show enough to make dealing Carter more likely.
  19. The problem isn't just the loss of confidence but the loss of trade value in your young arms. That's not so much a concern now, but a year or two from now it might be. If you are looking to deal a prospect for a position of need somewhere, it's a tough sell when the pitcher is carrying an ERA of around 6 in AAA no matter what the scouts might think of him.
  20. 1. Trade Gennett, Santana, Hader, and Bickford to White Sox for Jose Quintana 2. Sign FA Justin Turner for 5 years $85-90 million 3. Sign Jason Castro to platoon at Catcher for 2 years, $15-16 million Plus still make the type of moves they will have to do anyway this offseason, to balance the bullpen, maybe add a bench piece or two. Opening day lineup would be: Villar 2B Broxton CF Braun LF Turner 3B Carter 1B Castro C Perez/Brinson RF Arcia SS Quintana P Rotation behind Quintana would be Guerra, Davies, Peralta and either Anderson or Nelson. No that lineup wouldn't come near the Cubs, but neither are the Pirates or Cards but it could realistically be in the thick of wild card, and there'd still be opportunity to flip players if not. It won't happen or even be considered, but just thought it would make an interesting idea.
  21. The most effective starter pitching in that environment last year was Burgos, who pretty much is a fastball/slider pitcher who works down in the zone giving some weight to the theory.
  22. Brewers could certainly use an upgrade over Kirk Nieuwenhuis as an extra OF that's useful against RHP. But you don't replace him with a RH hitting OF. I would expect them to kick the tires on some of the veteran lefty hitting guys out there, but not necessarily one that plays CF as Perez can fill in there, and if Broxton is out injured or stumbles, Brinson is the obvious long term guy. Only way Davis makes any sense would be if Braun were traded and they didn't get back a Puig or some other youngish major league OF in the deal. But even in that instance, I wouldn't put him high on my list.
  23. Makes no sense at all. Brewers have RH hitting OF that can run, especially if you count Perez in that group.
  24. I would rate Scooter's bat better than his defense far better than his defense actually. Not that it is great or anything but he is better offensively than he is defensively. Yes I know what the advanced stats say about his offense and his defense but he is far worse defensively than his advanced stats say he is. I still think the Angels were the best shot and I thought a Cowart for Gennett deal would be fair for both the Brewers and the Angels but it looks like they are valuing defense here at 2B. He's about average defensively. Turns the double play fine other than a couple instances where he took foot off too quick. Decent range and accurate arm. Much, much better than Weeks. How quickly you forget all the times Weeks' bad throws cost them easy double plays. Almost never happens with Scooter.
  25. Don't disagree on Cooper, but they will be down 2 LH bats at CS, Cecchini and Wilkins, and it's far from sure thing that either Phillips or Taylor make CS roster. Reed, Cordell, Brinson and Cooper are all RH bats as are Broxton and Santana in Milwaukee. Wren isn't a power guy. Organizationally, they are lacking LH power at the higher levels including Milwaukee. Maybe they'll add a value FA at the major league level instead. There are guys out there for sure They need to get one somewhere.
