  1. I don't see him getting traded during the season if he's having a solid year. He's controllable for two more seasons. But that shouldn't preclude them from shopping for better options out there at the right price or from considering moving Braun to 1B to make room for a more all around hitter.
  2. Why Taylor? Well Broxton has struggled offensively to say the least. At some point even his great defense and speed is not enough, whether that is 40 more or 140 more ABs, if he's still struggling it'll be time for plan B. Options at AAA are all either not on the 40 man (Young, Presley, Peterson) or not true CF (Reed) or both. Granted Taylor would have to be added too, but he'd need to be added after the season anyway. Andy Wilkins is a logical guy to drop. He is completely replaceable. Taylor's a fine CF and it's his natural position. Some will undoubtedly say "You don't want to start Taylor's arby clock now do you?" Well not if they didn't have Phillips behind him. It's all about filling a spot until Phillips is ready sometime in 2017. This year is about looking at guys who may or may not be cornerstone players or have a roll going forward. Taylor has been something Broxton hasn't and that's a top prospect. Plus he's 4 years younger with more room to grow. Right now, he can't possibly be worse with the bat. Taylor is also a RH hitter, so he'd fit with Counsell's pattern of platooning Broxton. When Phillips comes up in 2017, Taylor can be optioned to continue progressing. Why not see where he is right now in this year of evaluation? To be fair to Broxton, it's early and he'll get more time. If he turns it around, great, but if he's still scuffling like this a month from now, I say it's time to give Taylor a look.
  3. Reed is the only guy in AAA outfield who's on the 40 man and is a RH hitter. Or if you want a true CF without starting Phillips arby clock, bring up Tyrone Taylor. He can't hit worse than Broxton. Flores isn't really a CF either but he's been out there. Reed's no Broxton defensively but how long can you go with a guy with an OPS under .200? I say no more than 3 more weeks. Michael Bourn's out there for major league minimum too, but oh yeah, they're tanking. Can't win too many.
  4. Peralta's trade value is at an all time low so that's not happening. He'll probably get a few more starts, then it'll be bullpen time when Garza returns. After this season Peralta is looking like a non-tender.
  5. Nelson actually had minor league hitting credentials so I don't think the comparison is a good one. He also was mainly being used as pinch hitter. Broxton's never done anything with the bat that remotely stamps him as a good offensive player other than some double digit HR years. Plus he's always struck out a lot. At nearly 26, it's not likely he's going to turn himself into a hitter anytime soon either. I didn't expect him to hit much, but he's being completely overmatched so far. That said it's only 15 plate appearances but with Reed swinging the bat well in AAA, the clock is ticking. Normally I'd give a guy 60 PA to show something. If he doesn't start doing something though in the next 25-30, I'd pull the plug. Where's the bunt attempts? A guy as fast as he is should have 2-3 infield hits per week but it's hard to beat out infield hits if you don't put the ball in play. I'm frankly dubious that Broxton has any future in the big leagues. Right now, I have more confidence in the pitchers for the Brewers getting a hit than Broxton. He's not the only disappointment. We knew Walsh might be a defensive liability and he is that, but we're still waiting for his first hit, and we're also waiting on Hill. Combined Hill, Broxton, Walsh and Maldonado are 3 for 56 (.054) with no extra base hits and 20 Ks. Ouch!! The Brewer pitchers are 2 for 16 (.125) with 8 Ks.
  6. Broxton can really run them down in CF. If only they could use a DH for his spot in the lineup.
  7. You are not alone. I hope Niewenhuis/Flores start to get most of the reps out there. Broxton looks like a guy that needs time in the minors. Flores' minor league splits are good vs. LHP too. Maybe send Broxton out and elevate Reed who's off to a solid start.
  8. Am I the only one thinking Broxton is overmatched in the big leagues? It's not this game or the fact he's 0 for the season, but his AB's simply are not good.
  9. I guess today isn't one of those given starts. Just about any pitcher in organized baseball is capable of pulling a gem out his butt in any given start even against guys at higher levels. But when your non-gems are what we've seen from Peralta for 3 straight starts, it's time to stop trotting him out there every 5th day.
  10. Thornburg has been lights out. Remember how KC rode 3 basically untouchable relievers to the playoffs in 2014? Just saying.
  11. Lots of pitchers were overlooked that I had on my top 25, Magnifico and Wang specifically. How can Wang be considered fringe when just 2 years ago Brewers sacrificed a 25 man roster spot for most of a year they contended just to keep him in the system. I get he wasn't great in 2015, and a few might have passed him but he wasn't bad considering how his development was hurt by the 2014 experiment. Another half dozen or more pitchers at least have the potential to move into the top 25 soon. As for hitters, I'm keeping an eye on Troy Stokes. He was a fairly high pick (4th round) and has performed well so far.
  12. Eric Thames, former major leaguer who's put up incredible numbers in Korea the past couple seasons is a FA after this year. Apparently he's not only flashing incredible power, with 84 HR combined in 14-15, and a high BA and OBP, but he's also stealing bases and playing some 1B. He's also saying he's considering a return to MLB. Carter's off to a nice start in the power department, and maybe he'll sustain it to the degree where you bring him back (he's under control through 2018), but if not, Thames might be worth a look as a left handed power bat to compliment the newly found power lefty hitter in Gennett, especially if he can play 1B. He'd also be a nice fit if they did happen to deal Braun. Thames doesn't turn 30 until November.
  13. He might be more valuable as a reliever. Rebuilding year or not if he can't get his ERA under 6 by mid to late May, he doesn't belong in the rotation. They don't have to replace him with one of the studs, just stick Capuano or Cravy in his spot and try him as a reliever.
  14. We know Davies is making his final AAA tune up today and will make his next start for Brewers on Sunday. Will Hader be replacing him in the Colorado Springs rotation? Davies will have avoided having to make a start at altitude. How long will the Brewers go with Peralta before he's banished to the pen and replaced by Lopez or Hader or would they just bring Capuano in out of the pen?

  16. Yeah I brought him up in another thread. Glad to see he's back, and you can sort of understand the Brewers not waiting on him longer and needing his roster spot but given what he did in 2013, and I have his bobblehead, I'd have liked the Brewers to have brought him to camp one more time. Perhaps they tried and he looked elsewhere but it's nice to see him doing well. Henderson has a great temperament for a closer and when healthy was a heck of a reliever. Hope they get another shot at him down the road.
  17. Jeremy Hazelbaker???? Why does it seem the Cardinals are the only team that comes up with these guys? He was a 27 year old career minor leaguer going nowhere when the Cardinals picked him up last May two weeks after the Dodgers released him. Now he's the 2nd coming of Stan Musial. With all the money Attanasio is saving, why not spend some and lure some of those Cardinal minor league instructors away from them?
  18. Gantner's former sister in law Mickey (Maureen) was a classmate of mine in high school. I know a few guys from Eden too who knew him and thought he was a good guy.
  19. Astro telecast had a trivia question over the weekend about which Astro, drafted by the Brewers in 2002, was a two time All Star for the Astros. A further Brewer connection was that Pence was taken out of a game at Miller Park when the trade to Phillies was completed. Pence at the time was the face of the franchise for Houston and his trade along with the one for Michael Bourn completed the bulk of the dismantling of that franchise from which it took another 4 years to recover.
  20. Your recollection of obscure names from 10 years ago is truly amazing. By the way, have you seen former Brewer Sean Halton is now playing for Reynosa in the Mexican League?
  21. With Nottingham's arrival on pace for 2018, I don't see an extension at this point, but why not keep him and take the pick if the offers aren't that substantial? Where are they going to find a veteran catcher to work with young arms the next two seasons better than Lucroy? If the system hadn't already been restocked pretty well with another high draft pick looming, then sure trading Lucroy soon would make a lot of sense. But he's not eating a lot of payroll, and this team might turn out to be fairly competitive and they'll still get a nice pick when he leaves. If by July 2017, the team is still not contending, finding a return better than the expected pick might still be an option as well.
  22. I don't know about "forcing Counsell's hand" but Rivera will see some playing time here and there. I suspect the plan is for him to go down when Arcia comes up, and get regular work for a couple months, then return, quite possibly at 3B, if they can deal Hill at the deadline. In the meantime, I think we'll see a lot of the present lineup. Hill brings a veteran presence in the infield and though he hasn't really started hitting. I see some shades of the 1992 Brewers in this team though and that's a good thing. That team had a young SS in Listach, a nice mix of veteran under 30 starters with youthful arms like Navarro, Bones and eventually Eldred and got good use out of a guy like Scott Fletcher, and they had some bullpen pieces that performed well.
  23. Astros broadcast team that includes former major league catcher Alan Ashby were extremely impressed with Thornburg, more so than Jeffress. Now with the need in the pen more critical, it appears that's where Thornburg stays, but he's using all his pitches now, much like he did as a starter the last couple months of 2013 when he was really effective. Maybe he and Peralta could switch roles at some point? Wily isn't commanding all his pitches. In short relief he could probably hit 97-98 with his fastball which might be enough. Blazek is looking good too.
  24. Scooter had an MVP worthy first week.
