  1. He had a very good spring too, and it's carried over. He's a better player than he was the last couple seasons.
  2. Neither could Fielder. You can hide a guy at first. You can't really in the outfield and certainly not behind the plate. I don't think Schwarber is anywhere near the hitter Fielder was either. Schwarber's at least as good as Fielder, maybe better. Schwarber's minor league OPS was 1.042. Fielder's was .921. Schwarber's a modern day Ruth. Cubs still have plenty of talent but Schwarber's was special, and everyone around Cubs knows it. There will be a psychological impact too. Helps Brewer pitchers who can now work around Rizzo.
  3. Cubs are only 3 more catastrophic injuries to their core for the Brewers to be their equal! Seriously, Anderson and Jungmann looked solid. Now they just need Davies to force them to keep him in the big leagues and the rotation will look good!
  4. If Counsel's thinking, "well we have an off day tomorrow, everyone in the pen is available, and with just 4 starters, lets limit Jungmann's innings", I think it's wrongheaded.
  5. I'm with you on that. This isn't KC's bullpen and Jungmann was sailing along pretty well.
  6. Players dominating minor leaguers will have their development stunted if they aren't brought to the big leagues for the final stages of development. Artificially holding them back because they don't quite fit a time table is shortsighted. Anthony Rizzo and Jose Altuve were developing into stars with awful teams.
  7. Happy to see Jim Henderson back in the big leagues!
  8. Pena young? He's 27 and has never established himself as a major league pitcher. He'll undoubtedly clear waivers and become a FA and what better organization to be a part of than one that's likely to go through 25 or so pitchers by season's end? It's more than just the one outing. He wasn't very good in spring and undoubtedly they were looking around for something better before the opener.
  9. Remember Jim Henderson? He just blew away the World Champs in his first appearance for the Mets. He's back throwing 95-96. Brewers just let him walk. Yeah he was hurt, but this was a guy who gave the Brewers some quality relief work.
  10. During that game last night Bill Raftery made an off the cuff reference to the O'Brien twins from Seattle University, then followed it up with, "probably nobody remembers them". Thanks to the internet age, I looked it up. Johnny and Eddie O'Brien were stars on Seattle U team in early 1950's, then signed by the Pirates and went straight to the major leagues as 2B/SS combo in 1953. Amazingly, they were just 5'9". They were the only guys who played both in the major leagues and the NCAA basketball tournament. Johnny O'Brien has Milwaukee baseball connection having been with the Braves in 1959. He was part of a revolving door at 2B filling in the year Schoendienst was battling TB. He's still around at 85, though his brother Eddie passed away in 2014.
  11. Which should also help his already minuscule trade value. Shortening his window to impress anyone isn't good for his trade value, nor is a sore shoulder issue. Teams already would need to weigh what he shows this year vs. his horrible 2015 performance. If that's only a dozen starts as opposed to 15 or 16, it's hard to justify taking on any reasonable portion of his contract for this year and next.
  12. For a guy his size, Scooter has always been able to generate a lot of bat speed. His confidence cratered early on last year, but he's never looked better. Before everyone starts salivating about his trade value, keep in mind he's the same age as Keon Broxton. Maybe before the season's over they might want to think about buying out his arby years and add another year or two of control.
  13. Hill's a pro. Yes his career has been marked by some rather wildly inconsistent performance year to year, but he's put together a solid career overall.
  14. You sure he didn't say, "We'll have another (season) for you next April?"
  15. Did I read somebody posted on one of the threads they thought Brewers would have a pitching staff in the middle of the pack? Back to back seasons giving up 12 runs in opener in which the "ace" starts the game.
  16. That was rookie manager stuff. With our bench not sure what he was trying to accomplish other than to give Kirk and Flores some RBI ABs I think Broxton will be hit for a lot this year with men on considering both bench OF can play CF.
  17. Shame if they waste a game when Bumgarner was far from himself. Nelson deserved the nod for opening day. That's my first "told you so of the year", but it was a no-brainer. so I won't be giving myself any pats on the back. I will for Gennett with a HR and a BB vs. a lefty though!
  18. I reconsidered and removed it. He'll be more like .750ish. They turn to Phillips because the hole there will be gaping.
  19. He's only 14 short of my prediction in the predictions thread!! At this rate, he'll have by Friday!
  20. 67-95, 3 games ahead of Reds for 4th place Team MVP: Lucroy Home Runs: Davis 38 (oops forgot he's gone), Braun: 28 Wins: Nelson 14 Bold Predictions: Gennett surpasses 15 HR Hill is NL Comeback Player of the Year Phillips is everyday CF by August 1 Arcia finishes 3rd in NL ROY 7 Different Brewer relievers record a save
  21. I think Hill will be fine. Villar, Broxton, and Carter? I'm not so sure. Neither am I as sold on Santana as Rosiak who had him 3rd in his rankings of Brewer roster. I could be wrong on Santana and he'll blossom. I hope I am, but I have lingering doubts.
  22. Everyone Stearns traded for made the opening day roster. That's no surprise. GM's, especially ones new on the job are going to want to give their deals the opportunity to work out. That the Bucs would deal Broxton for a piece they later decided they didn't need speaks volumes to me what they thought Broxton's future was. I personally thought Rogers showed enough in 2015 to get a shot with a rebuilding Brewers team that lacked viable first base options and I don't see Carter, who they signed subsequently as a big upgrade. But that's life for late round picks even if they perform well at the major league level. They simply aren't on other teams radar. I'm guessing Houston didn't spend a lot of time, if any, scouting Rogers at any point, either as a amateur or a minor leaguer. Stearns knew Carter. He didn't know Rogers all that well.
  23. The vets at AAA, Young, Presley, Peterson and Elmore don't figure to hang around long. Either they will opt out, be sold somewhere, or if they don't perform well, released. That will clear space for the guys in AA that deserve to be in AAA.
