  1. brewcrewdue80, the AB to Maurer, he painted the corner at the knees the first two pitches to get ahead 0-2, then inexplicably tried to come inside probably to back Mauer off the plate some and missed right over the heart of the plate. Boom! He hasn't lost command completely, but he has lost command from time to time of the inside corner and that's where mistakes end up in the seats. Age a factor? Could be. Velocity is easy to measure, but sometimes the body just doesn't do what the mind thinks it can when you get older and your body doesn't recover like it used to. He had the outside corner locked in but body couldn't adjust and deliver off the inside corner when the mind wanted it to.
  2. Agree with you Kellysdaddy. Twins have been playing well over their heads. I'm not overly impressed with their lineup or their pitching staff. Kudos to Molitor who's been doing it with mirrors, but this is not a contending team. Brewers squared up balls all day against Pelfry, unfortunately most were right at somebody. As an aside, somebody needs to take Counsell aside and explain the advantages of playing some hit and run against a groundball pitcher.
  3. Melvin has little to nothing to do with the draft. He's the boss of baseball operations. That includes the draft. The director of scouting reports to him.
  4. I'm not all that high on Conforto or Nimmo. Conforto is a nice hitting prospect but he's limited to LF. Nimmo doesn't seem to me to be an upgrade over Taylor. I certainly wouldn't deal Segura for either plus Molina who's at least 3-4 years away. I would pay $4 million of Ramirez salary if Mets want to give me Gee for him.
  5. It's a natural outgrowth of the litigious society we've become and not surprising in this day and age when ambulance chasers are major sponsors on telecasts. I find Brewers selling their souls to Hupy and Abraham disgusting but they aren't the only ones. Want to know why medical costs are so high? Takes a lot of cash to get Captain Kirk to do ads for your law firm not to mention to buy time on baseball telecasts. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? You sit near the field, your focus needs to be on the field. If your reflexes aren't what they used to be, I suggest the club level.
  6. Pardon me for being skeptical but with the draft this week, the focus gets turned on Melvin's draft record and having Jungmann reach the majors, deserving or not, will be hailed as a win for the embattled GM. Thornburg deserves the start. Agree that Cravy better make the next one though after a strong outing today.
  7. It will take a tremendous offer for Melvin to deal Segura. Segura is a 25 year old core player under control for 3 more years. It's a good bet he ends up at 3B a year from now to make room for Arcia. His offensive numbers are mirroring his 2013 so it's looking more and more like 2014 was the outlier. No doubt teams are inquiring on his availability though. If Perez starts producing, the chances Segura gets dealt go up. But that's a big if. Perez is one of those enigmas. Looks like a great talent visually, but hasn't produced at all. Ramirez does nothing to sweeten any potential deal even if most of his salary is picked up. Think teams see his slash line of .203/.250/.373 and don't realize he's done?
  8. Who didn't see that coming?? Time to release Lohse and bring up another Tyler.
  9. Neither would be claimed, both would elect free agency, we would pay their salaries, and get nothing in return. A bit early to just dump them and swallow their salary. Between them they are a combined -1.6 WAR so far. I realize they are holding out hope that a sudden surge by either would allow them to move them (hence the post in blue), but really nothing in return is better than a negative return on their salaries. Somebody would pick them up and you can save the major league minimum. Brewers tried that with Wolf in 2012. Maybe should have let him go earlier and looked at the young guys.
  10. Why is anyone surprised by this? It was reported when he first had it that it would be temporary and he would need to repeat the procedure periodically. Brewers could have been more upfront about why he wasn't in today's lineup. Didn't hear anything about him being in LA until after the lineup was posted. I think he's rebounded rather nicely. He struggled just a bit the past week so the treatment was wearing off. No big deal. The week before he was NL player of the week. Block reported on the pregame show, that he'd be back in there sometime in the Minnesota series.
  11. Why on earth do you rest your leading RBI guy when you are struggling to score runs? I'm sure the teams still within range of St. Louis love to see that, not. Braun is 31, not 41 and tomorrow's an off day. Matheny's not resting Holliday. Does Counsell have it in for Nelson? He rested Braun in Nelson's next to last start too. The result? A 2-1 loss when Nelson was terrific but got no support. I predict another shutout loss with that lineup. It's almost like they are trying to lose games which is why I don't plan on attending a game anytime soon.
  12. Trading all 3 of those guys during the season for prospects will mean 100 losses for the next 3-4 seasons. You can get away with that with huge local media revenue like they have in Chicago and Houston, but it's not feasible in a market like Milwaukee that relies so much on gate receipts. This is after all a business and the business model for the Brewers differs from that of the Astros. It wouldn't shock me if either Gomez or Segura is traded, but Lucroy is going nowhere. There's nothing and I mean nothing behind him here. Further I think if they do plan to deal Gomez or Segura, it will be after the season because they will want something of value that helps them on the field now and that's much more likely to be the case in a December deal than it is in July. The chances of trading Garza are practically nil right now. But his career has been one of continual peaks and valleys and he may actually have value a year from now with less total on his deal assuming he's in better form. It's probably in the Brewer's interest to hang on to him and try to sell high when he gets on a roll. With Lohse, it's Randy Wolf all over again. They could hope somebody might claim him on waivers or takes his contract in a deal for nothing in return, but more likely is he'll end up just being released in August just like Wolf was 3 years ago. Ramirez is another guy with no value. Brewers can hope he gets hot so that some team would claim him off waivers and they can save a few bucks. But a player in return? No. K-Rod is the guy that might bring something of value if you deal him this season. His form is excellent and there are teams out there that could use him. Lind is a possibility as there are teams out there that could use him, but they shouldn't give him away without a significant return. Teams thinking the Brewers will deal him for a C level prospect need to think again. They don't have to deal him. His option for next year is reasonable and really he's the best option they have to play 1B in 2016 by far.
  13. Who takes Peterson's spot in Sky Sox OF? Reed perhaps? Wren?
  14. Branyan's problem was that in addition to the strikeouts, he was streaky and he provided nothing when he was not hitting. Mike Olt (#22), Javy Baez (#4), and Matt Davidson (#72) are all guys with big power/big strikeout numbers that haven't established themselves after being top prospects. I'm sure there are more.
  15. I would have just released Ramirez or Lohse in the hopes somebody would claim them on waivers If not for Smith's pending suspension, they would likely have sent down a reliever instead of Cravy. They are in "opportunity mode" right now so lots of guys are going to get looks. We certainly haven't seen the last of Cravy for 2015. My money's on the next Tyler, Thornburg. He pitched last Friday, so he's probably going today, and would be ready to make the next start on Tuesday, when the Brewers next will need a 5th starter. I also really think Blazek will start at some point too but the Smith situation is preventing that now. Wonder if Michael Reed or Kyle Wren will be promoted to take Peterson's spot in AAA?
  16. Perez played 2 games in the Outfield, 3 years ago, in the Venezuelan Winter League. Does that count? They believe Hector Gomez can play LF too.
  17. Perez is 6 years younger than Herrera. Herrera's expendable. Don't think this the last flyer they'll take this season trying to find a hidden gem or two. Anyone know if Perez has any options left? I think right now this makes Hector Gomez/Jason Rogers tandem the backup corner OF.
  18. There are good developments this year despite the record. Segura's rebounded to the point where he becomes a viable option to move to 3B allowing the talent at SS in the system to take over that spot. While he may not fit the mold of the power hitting 3B he can provide a nice combination of defense and offense.
  19. The most damning decisions made by Melvin in recent years were the signings of 4 FA pitchers: Suppan, Wolf, Lohse and Garza. The first three were all virtually the same guy, veterans with long histories coming off of peak career years. Garza has been sometimes brilliant but frustratingly inconsistent his entire career. Oh the first 3 started off useful enough, but were all done before their contracts expired. Not coincidently, Attanasio was to some extent involved in all four signings, but that still hangs on Melvin. It takes an ace to get over the hump and twice Melvin pulled the trigger on trades to get one and both led to postseason appearances. But none were drafted/developed in his tenure though there's still some hope for Nelson and Peralta. Until they stop settling for at best mid rotation guys in their 30's as "big" signings and either start developing top of the rotation starters themselves, or play with the big boys in FA and pay the going rate for a true top of the rotation guy with something left in his tank, the best they can hope for is to once every 5 years or so accumulate enough in their system to swing a deal for a short term fix. The notion that they can get their by dealing off their assets for prospects is dubious at best.
  20. Regardless, the value of Garza can't be any lower, and it might be wiser to hold on to him through this lost season and maybe into next and hope he rebuilds some value.
  21. If you weren't around back then you can't appreciate what Selig accomplished in bringing baseball back to Milwaukee. Milwaukee and Wisconsin were blackballed by the powers in the game back then for having the audacity to fight to keep the Braves in court after repeated lies by Braves ownership about their intentions. Selig's fight to bring baseball back started when he held his nose and essentially ran the Braves baseball operations in Milwaukee in the lame duck season of 1965 for a small percentage of the gate, continued on through attempts to lure the White Sox and land a expansion team. As long as Walter O'Malley was around though Milwaukee had two chances, zero and none. It took a bankruptcy court in Seattle to get the Pilots. That Selig had not given up after losing out in the expansion a year earlier is a testament to the man.
  22. Thornburg? Or maybe a Taylor does that count? If I'm Spurlin or Linehan, I'm getting ready just in case. Tyler obviously was the fad name in the early 90's. You can often tell the era of a player by his first name. Anyone like me over the age of 50 likely did not know a single Tyler growing up.
  23. So the guy with the highest ERA on the Biloxi roster gets promoted to fill a roster spot? That logic somehow seems perfect for this organization.
  24. While fielding percentage isn't the best indicator, Moran has a .967 career FP at 3B which is quite good. I also am not concerned by his power numbers. He's just 22 and the power will come naturally. I'll take a contact guy who projects to increase power over the big minor league slugger who strikes out once every 3 AB's.
