  1. Streak should make Brewers think twice about selling off players under control in 2016 or at least if you do, try and get something back that bolsters you in the short term as well as the long term. Last thing I want to see is them dealing Lind to Cardinals for some class A player and seeing him at 1B for St. Louis next year too. This is not an awful baseball team and has a decent core that can be back next year. Sell off the expiring contracts if offered something of value, but demand a decent return for Parra if they go that route. Jungmann and Perez have been revelations over the past month.
  2. Getting worried? Brewers are 19-14 since June 1. That's a bit more than a simple dead cat bounce. I have a problem with surrendering their chances to compete in 2016. Good franchises can build their systems and still compete.
  3. He's going to get a heck of a lot more than $5-6 million if he keeps his OPS over .800. Melky Cabrera got 3 yrs and 42 million coming off an almost identical season to the one Parra's having now. Parra's career numbers aren't far off Cabrera either and he's just 28. I'm starting to think I'd hold on to him and give him a QO. If he takes it ok, he'd be overpaid but he wouldn't be tying up cash into the future. If he signs elsewhere, he brings back a nice high draft pick. If he turns it down, but doesn't get what he's looking for, then approach him with a team friendly offer for 3 years. I won't even get into the discussion that his defense is average to subpar. That's ridiculous. Aoki and DeJesus aren't comps. Aoki is 5 years older. DeJesus is 7 years older. We are in a different era. Offense is down. Look at the lineups teams are trotting out there. Most aren't very good. Parra has a chance to make a lot.
  4. Speaking of Parra, is he now a guy to consider holding on to and giving a QO to in the offseason? I mean, he's only 28 and if he finishes the year with an OPS over .800, he's going to find himself a sought after FA. Isn't the draft pick likely to be as good if not better return than what they can get in a trade? If he takes the offer, they have a quality stopgap in CF or perhaps 1B for essentially what they are paying ARam this year. If he doesn't and his market isn't that hot, they can still sign him to a multi-year deal. That's assuming they deal either Gomez or Lind.
  5. Yes!!! Cherry picking a select portion of the season in which they are *almost* .500!!! Ennder's right. They need to think hard about blowing up a team based on essentially 60 game stretch from late August to May 1. Are they a championship caliber team right now? No. Do they have quality players on their roster that can be built around over the next several seasons? Yes. Are there some moves that can be made that could address issues for this team rather than the 2020 team? Yes. Is there some talent currently in the system that can be integrated into this roster and provide a boost? Yes. Do they have a loyal fanbase that supports them? Yes. Does the payroll committed in future seasons preclude adding a player here or there via FA? No.
  6. Farina can't be long for Arizona can he? Nothing in his college stats suggest he should have been drafted either. Amazing start to pro career though.
  7. Very curious moves. Rogers getting AB's to prepare if Lind is dealt? What's Cravy's role? Is Lohse about to be sent packing? Davis returning in a few days, maybe Broxton or Lohse goes then? Knebel down for more regular late inning work? Deal for K-Rod in works?
  8. Glimmer of hope based on what happened in 91 when they finished 40-19 to crawl above .500 and make it harder for Bando to fire Trebelhorn. Will be very tough with all the games left vs. division. Can't play the Phillies every week. But we're finally seeing the team we thought they had and those of us advocating adjustments rather than complete blowup of roster feeling better. The core here isn't bad. Once we stopped seeing the likes of Maldonado, Schafer, Hector, and Herrera on a daily basis, they became competitive.
  9. Wonder where Lara ends up in 2016? Appleton at 18?
  10. Astros just put George Springer on DL with broken wrist. Maybe the Brewers could package Lohse with Parra and get back a decent AA pitcher, say lefty Brian Holmes. I think the only way they can dump some of Lohse's salary is to include him in a package deal.
  11. Burgos was one of the most impressive pitchers in the entire WBC in 2013. His arm was sore when he got his first big league shot that year but like a lot of guys he was afraid to say anything. If he's fully healthy, and a full year in the minors will be evidence of that, then sure he's in the picture to contend for a rotation spot.
  12. Because GMs make substantially more and they are already paying Melvin for that job through this season. Trivial as it seems, it's smart business to control costs. It's not like Montgomery isn't likely on the same page anyway and doesn't have work to do in his current job.
  13. That's exactly what I'm saying Louis. The Brewers can't settle for a return like what they gave up for Parra to be their 4th OF last. Lind can be a difference maker in a lineup that needs a bat in the middle of it. Lind still has value to the Brewers too. He's got a reasonable team option for 2016 and we're kind of seeing what this team was supposed to look like. I don't know that the Brewers have waved the white flag for 2016 but even if they have they shouldn't be giving that impression to other teams who will then expect to pick over their roster. They need to set a price worthy of a guy who's a 4 WAR player with a 2 WAR contract. That should be a high price.
  14. Only guys I see Brewers moving before the deadline are Parra and Cotts. Another hot week from Ramirez and he'll be moved if the Brewers are willing to pay at least half of his remaining contract. Lohse has zero trade value. Teams are waiting for him to be released so they can take a flier for minimum salary.
  15. Is it too early to get excited about Gilbert Lara having a 1.002 OPS 9 games into his professional career at age 17?
  16. Nelson is the one starter that on any given day can go out and dominate an opponent. He's done it 4-5 times already. I consider him to be the number 1 starter on this staff right now. That's not saying a lot and he needs to find a lot more consistency but you certainly don't send him down.
  17. I just don't give up a proven middle of the order major league hitter I control over the next year and a half for B level prospects especially ones that are 3-4 years away from the big leagues. Proven middle of the order major league hitters just are more valuable than that especially ones on relative modest deals in the primes of their careers.
  18. Lets see. Lohse is 4-9 with a 6.28 ERA. He's got negative trade value at this point and even a couple decent starts before the All Star game isn't likely to change that. Why not just release Lohse? Some team will no doubt take a chance on him for minimum salary, and the Brewers can use that minimal savings to pay Jungmann. Knowing the Brewers, they'll send down Jungmann in the hopes Lohse has a run of good starts leading to the deadline and somebody will take him if the Brewers pick up half of his remaining salary and accept a low level minor league non-prospect. If not, Lohse will be released in August just as Wolf was in 2012.
  19. The "wave" you speak about isn't going to be enough to dislodge the Cubs who's current wave will be in their primes by 2017 or likely the Cardinals or Pirates either. In the meantime, they still have Lucroy and Braun in or near their primes. Lind should bring a decent return but it's not likely it will be someone who'll be in the core of the wave. Unless someone overpays for Lind or surrenders a young mid rotation arm, I'd keep him around and at least field a team with some entertainment value and at least longshot playoff hopes (rather than no hope) while we wait on the prospects. He can be moved next year at this time too and it's not like they won't have pieces to deal in the next couple years as the wave is arriving.
  20. 14-14 record in June, the first non losing month since last June when they were 18-10! If they can follow that up with 14 more wins in July and 20 each in August and Sept/Oct, they are at 85 wins for the year! No, I'm not calling for a mid-air collision of planes carrying the Cardinals and Cubs.
  21. Everyone is harping on his minor league stat lines too. He spent time in the Midwest League and Florida State League at 18. He was still just 20 when he was in his 3rd Midwest League season and saw his numbers improve there every year. Compare his first year Midwest League results with Gatewood who many here are very high on. Pretty comparable. At 22, he hit .301 in the Eastern League. First place Detroit thought enough of him to bring him up for 34 games that season. We are not talking about some career minor leaguer who got on a roll in AAA in his late 20s and found his way to the majors on a last place team. No offense intended for Shane Peterson. Sometimes having the worst record in baseball has its plusses like getting first shot at a diamond in the rough who got caught up in the out of options numbers game. Baseball is a game of opportunity. He wasn't getting it riding the pines in Detroit. He's getting it here and he's taking full advantage.
  22. What are you basing that on, a handful of widely scattered MLB AB's before he became a Brewer? He's just now starting to see steady playing time and over his last 15 games he's hitting .486/.500/.686. Nobody is projecting him to be Mike Schmidt but give the kid a chance. This is a last place team going nowhere and a 24 year old has come out of nowhere and is raking and oh yeah, playing a pretty solid 3B which just happens to be a position of need. In this type of season, you take a long look at a guy like him.
  23. Hernan Perez, Hello!? No need for Arcia to be in the majors before next June at the earliest. They haven't come out and said it but it appears Perez is taking over 3B now. Ramirez will make the occasional start to keep his stroke and be in the lineup vs. lefties when Perez moves over to 2B. Perez hasn't played much 3B but he looks like a natural there so far. Lind is a lousy defensive 1B but he's a proven middle of the order hitter, and as such Brewers need to demand a substantial return if they choose (they don't have to) to deal him.
  24. Nelson started the season as the Brewers #5 starter. If the 2016 season started next week, I dare say he's the opening day pitcher. He's progressing and when he's on, he's right up there with the top guys in the league. His progression in the 2nd half and how Peralta looks after his return will be very interesting to watch. For there to be any hope of this team making things interesting the next couple of seasons, they would need to have both Nelson and Peralta perform like top of the rotation starters that their stuff suggests they can be.
  25. Listen I don't care either way. If baseball thinks it's cleaner than the NFL because of it's lifetime ban rule then good for them. I don't equate throwing a World Series as the Black Sox did with betting on your own team to win or betting on game you aren't playing in. I understand having a rule against it, but the punishment is still way out of proportion to the crime. That Rose undoubtedly knew of the consequences but still gambled is further proof that he was a compulsive gambler and his compulsion outweighed logic. Anyone who knows someone with OCD knows that compulsive people cannot be reasoned with logically.
