  1. Too much of the season left for moves to start. The buyers today could be sellers by July and vice versa. I think the Brewers will be active, but all it will take is to be 5 games over .500 in both May and June, and things will look a bit different. Now that would take a rather dramatic turnaround, but in today's game where everything is amplified, there's a lot more dramatic swings like that. The Brewers got next to nothing out of Braun, Lucroy and Ramirez and Gomez in April. If that changes this team could look a lot different.
  2. The April schedule is finished after today! A win will up the winning percentage for the month to .227 which is better than May 2013's .214!
  3. If a 13-39 record in his last 52 games (.250 winning percentage) hasn't gotten Roenicke fired, I doubt some emails would do the trick. The owner is completely tone deaf.
  4. Conor Gillaspie is off to a .205/.239/.318 start as the everyday 3B for the Sox. He stumbled down the stretch last year too. Now they have Beckham as a platoon partner but with their rookie 2B Micah Johnson sitting on 0 RBI, they may eventually turn that job back over to Beckham, who's more super utility guy now than candidate to be everyday 3B. Of course Ramirez hasn't exactly torn in up, but maybe the Brewers can take advantage of a nice 2-3 week stretch for Aram, assuming he has one, and unload him to the White Sox. Don't think he'd bring anything back other than salary relief at this point, and they might even need to pay some of it, but worth hoping that Aram can put together a bit of a flash of his old self before the trading deadline.
  5. Brennan did hit 16 HR last year in Appleton and 12 in 198 AB's in Helena the year before. It's fair to say he's shown power potential. He also has a good eye at the plate with 87 walks last year. Demuth, while a good hitter, hasn't shown much HR power or even doubles type power.
  6. Veteran Scott Baker was dealing at AAA, before his call up. Brewers going to need to hope he isn't the answer.
  7. For Segura, I want catcher Austin Hodges, outfielder Rymer Liriano, and a pitcher like Cory Mazzoni or Eliot Morris I don't see any of those guys as core players going forward. Nice pieces perhaps and guys that might see significant action, but if I'm trading Segura, I want a guy who's likely to be a core player as the centerpiece. I don't see it with that group. Gettys would also be a very nice piece but he's a bit too far off to project and the Brewers have some CF depth in their system.
  8. MCW doesn't yet know how good he is. This is a guy who hardly played as a freshman at Syracuse, and two years later was NBA rookie of the year. Some games he's just not assertive offensively but as he gets confidence he can be a perennial All Star. His height is such an advantage. Real unsung guy on this team is Henson though. If he ever developed a mid range shot, he'd be unstoppable.
  9. I've posted this before but there are plenty of players comparable to Schafer with major league jobs. He's by no means unique or "terrible" by comparative standards to 5th OF who's main attribute is defense. Do I really need to list them again? Look at the offensive production from 5th OF who are defensive players first. More than half the league has a guy not unlike Schafer offensively. A bunch hit under .200 last year. Logan Schafer makes $511,000. Making him the scapegoat for last year's collapse or this year's ineptitude is ludicrous.
  10. He does if the Brewers are close to that team in the standings (they weren't in 2013 and its not looking good for 2015) or he was sending them a guy under control beyond that season. You wouldn't see him deal them Maldonado to the Cards if Yadi went down.
  11. While no Brewer fan is shedding any tears over the Cardinals losing their ace for the season, anyone else see this as adding a possible suitor for Lohse? Assuming of course that the Brewers don't suddenly do a 180 and miraculously get back in the race, one would think they could make an exception to their not dealing within the division rule if the Cards come up with a decent offer.
  12. True enough but I just don't see this team doing a Cub style rebuild. Too much of the team's revenue comes from ticket sales. If you can get the Red Sox to take both Ramirez and Garza off their hands for Holt and a B level type prospect, that frees up more cash to upgrade in the deep FA pitching market this winter and also give you a guy in Holt who'd be the everyday or at least a platoon guy at 3B, and a clear upgrade over this version of Ramirez. I'm all for shedding salary but not with the purpose of intentionally losing 95-100 games for 3 years beyond this one. That can happen naturally as it appears is happening this season. Why waste prime years of solid controllable arms like Nelson and Peralta intentionally being bad? Get better veterans than Lohse and Garza around them. Brewers problems in part stem from paying a lot for average or less than average production. Rather than pay going rate for two guys like Lohse and Garza, combine that amount and add a clear ace. See White Sox offseason.
  13. The Brewers need a young (under age 44) manager. Ted Simmons, really? He's 65. Davey Nelson? 70. Gardenhire's "only" 57, and at least has a track record of having teams that played smart baseball. Don't know much about Andy Haines, but he fits the profile age wise.
  14. Don't overlook the guy in the 2 hole, Brennan, who's sporting a nifty .406 .OBP. He hasn't homered yet, but he had 16 for T-Rats last year.
  15. What made you think they'd be better than the guys they had last year? Guys like Hermida, Halton, Gindl, Morris, are all capable AAA bats, and they are missing Rogers now. The guys who replaced them are all rejects from other organizations. This year's AAA roster was too left handed going in and with Rogers gone, they have no sock from the right side.
  16. Alcides Escobar says hello. Martin Maldonado says hi. Current Latin American players originally signed by Brewers among the top Brewer prospects: Arcia, Lara, Jorge Lopez, Yadiel Rivera, Miguel Diaz. Arcia might be the most exciting prospect to come along in the Brewer system since Braun.
  17. Side note. Gorzelanny's been ok for Detroit out of the pen. Would much prefer the Brewers kept him instead of overpaying for Cotts.
  18. We can go back and forth on the merits of player acquisition during Melvin's tenure. He's done some good and some bad. It is what it is. He's not been creative or overly aggressive. Again that's good and bad. But the negative that stands out is his selection of managers and that is a huge part of judging a GM. He's got one now who has a record of letting bad stretches get completely out of hand and completely clueless on what needs to be done to minimize slumps. Under Roenicke, one bad week and this team gets tighter than a peanut butter jar lid. It happened in May of 2013. Again just before All Star break last year, and the one they are in now that's lasted nearly 50 games.
  19. The landscape for all youth sports has changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Kids that show talent in a sport are pressured into specializing by 11 or 12. Baseball gets less of the athletes because in most of the country it can't be played for much of the year because of the climate. In large metropolitan areas, there's competition just to make a high school team in sports like basketball and soccer. Spending your summer playing baseball puts kids way behind their classmates in the other sports. Bottom line is the kids that do play a lot of baseball are better prepared that their counterparts were in the 60's and 70's but there's just not as many of them. About 15 years ago, there was a black kid in suburban Chicago by the name of Bo Flowers. Flowers was the prototypical 3 sport star in high school. He was a D1 recruit as a QB, a top basketball player and a dominant pitcher/hitter in baseball. He was drafted by Tigers in 5th round out of high school, but found the going rough in pro ball, never making it past class A. My guess is that he just struggled against kids in the low minors that played a lot more baseball than he had growing up. I think eventually he went back to play college football somewhere if memory serves but he was out of baseball entirely by his 23rd birthday. Those are the kind of guys that used to make it with regularity but specialization has made it tough on the all around athletes.
  20. Hobbs Johnson (0.79) makes it a Big 3 at the top of the Biloxi rotation along with Brooks Hall (1.13) and Tyler Wagner (1.59).
  21. Kind of a dream that anyone would want Ramirez but he was able to offset the HR by the Reds over the hill guy Marlon Byrd thankfully. We need to see a lot more games like that from Lohse so they can get something for him. Same goes for Broxton!
  22. That's not the point Patrick. Lots of teams have injuries but they don't play .133 ball. You don't replace Roenicke with Narron who's attached to his hip and should be fired as well. You replace him on an interim basis with Sedar who predates Roenicke in the organization. You tell Melvin he's done after the trading deadline and if he wishes to stay on to shepherd the franchise, fine. If not let Ash handle those chores with the understanding he's done too later on. If you want him gone at the end of the season, you 100% do not want him to be the one to oversee any selling at & before the trade deadline. The Cubs did that very thing with Hendry in 2011. He was told before the draft that year that he was done after the trade deadline. He drafted Baez that year. He made one minor deal before the deadline trading away Fukudome for a couple prospects from Cleveland that never panned out. The rest of their roster at the time wasn't tradeable because of big contracts. Point is that a professional and a baseball lifer, like Melvin, likely has the integrity to live up to his contract. You don't change GM's a month before the draft or with the trading deadline looming. That doesn't mean you can't do him the courtesy of telling him he won't be retained. They are right in the midst of finalizing scouting reports and setting up draft scenarios. In addition to what we see regarding trades and drafting etc, there's a lot of nuts and bolts to the job that need to be tended to also.
  23. Sedar should be fired; he is not a good 3rd base coach. I believe he is Doug Melvin's snitch on the coaching staff and thats why he has been here so long. I would rather let guerrero or coles take over for the season, as they have managed a lot of the younger players in the minors. Alex Grammas was a great 3rd base coach but a horrific manager. One has nothing to do with the other. Sedar is probably best equipped for a run as interim manager. Yes he's a "house guy", but he knows the roster better than anyone, and I'm sure he's got ideas that aren't in lock step with Roenicke's thinking and he'll probably lighten up the clubhouse some. Plus he's probably fine with being interim. I'd move Guerrero to bench coach, and find a couple guys off the street. Bring Davey Nelson in to coach 1B and find Don Money and bring him in to coach 3B.
