  1. Didn't the Brewers ask him to play at least part time in the OF and he refused? Guess beggars can't be choosers at this point in their careers. Good luck to Rickie, though. I hope he does well in Seattle. Yeah the Brewers pay him $11 million and he refuses to play the OF. Now he's fine playing the OF for $2 million because otherwise he wouldn't have a job period. That says all you need to know about Rickie Weeks. Good riddance.
  2. Yeah, I'd assume DHing v lefties, & giving Cano days off v LHPs Cano doesn't take many days off and why would he considering he's making $24 million? He certainly doesn't sit vs. lefties. I'd bet Weeks doesn't make 10 starts at 2B almost all of which would be on days when Cano is DH'ing.
  3. Nothing is going to happen until the final weeks of spring training if at all. With pitchers reporting in a week, wait and see what you have now before shelling out that kind of investment. I'm fine with Warning Track Power's proposal that includes Parra in the deal in some form as a way to mitigate the salary being taken on. Granted Phils are going nowhere, but Parra would be an upgrade in their OF. Protect a dozen or so prospects and let them have the pick of one of the rest.
  4. From what I remembered he was not a good defensive catcher so i did a little digging. It appears he is not good. When you take into consideration his pitch framing he is down right bad. http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2014/8/21/6046603/dioner-navarro-quiet-disaster The first thing a catcher has to be is at least an average catcher in my humble opinion. So no, don't give up something for a temporary offensive boost at a defense first position. Blue Jay staff went from an ERA of 4.25 in 2013 to 4.00 in 2014 with Navarro as primary catcher. More importantly he's been a 2.3 WAR player the last 2 seasons. Lucroy's solid defensively though some feel "pitch framing" is way overrated as a skill. Lucroy's value to the team comes primarily from his bat too. Navarro is not a premier catcher but the drop off from Lucroy to Navarro is less severe that from Lucroy to Maldonado. With a team that has little margin for error even 1 or 2 games difference is significant.
  5. Navarro had a line of .272/.315/.393 against RHP in 2014. In 2013 he posted .279/.333/.430 line vs RHP. For a bench bat from either side or a fill in everyday catcher those are fine. Brewers need to protect against a Hart-like lingering injury situation. Maldonado's a nice backup but not a starter.
  6. I'd be on the phone with Toronto asking about Navarro. Wasn't it just two years ago that Hart was only going to miss a few weeks? If he comes back healthy, fine. With Lucroy platooning at 1B, they may need an extra catcher anyway, and Navarro is a pretty potent bench bat too.
  7. I'm sure the "politics" Davis is referring to is that the people doing the rating can be influenced by factors other than just a fair unbiased assessment of players. Sites that have subscriptions want to generate traffic to those sites to generate income. Bigger market interest = greater income for the site. It's pretty simple.
  8. Thought they see Willis as potential reliever. It wouldn't hurt having one vet in the AAA rotation for a couple months if a need arises and he's throwing well then come June 1 just let him go if he's not.
  9. Zito reportedly threw for 4 or 5 teams. Anyone think it's worth taking a minor league flyer on Zito with an opt out date around June 1 as some veteran insurance?
  10. Chris Perez has 133 career saves to Broxton's 118. Over the final month of 2014 after a DL stint in August, it appeared Perez found something: 7 IP, 2 Hits, 0 Runs, 4 BB, 9 K's. Perez still gets it up there in the mid 90's. An argument can be made he wasn't right physically before that. I think his below the radar signing could prove to be Melvin's best move this winter.
  11. Lets see him throw first. He had what's commonly referred to as a "routine cleaning out" of his shoulder, not the dreaded torn rotator cuff surgery. It was reported last month that he's thrown off a mound with no pain. Lets see if he can let loose at some point in Arizona.
  12. For one guy this is even fine. But we have Fiers and Nelson who we really have no idea what we will get out of them. Garza has injury issues and Lohse is hitting that scary age range. Behind those guys we have no established starters at all. The depth is just way too thin as we are setup now. Most years you start 8+ guys and I'd much rather see Nelson as the 6 than the 5! Nelson turns 26 in June. He's already shown he can dominate at AAA. He's not going to get better making more starts there. You either show confidence in him or you don't. It's time. "No idea" on Fiers? Sorry but we've seen him start 35 major league games, many of which he's dominated major league hitters. Has he had stretches where he's struggled? Sure, like just about every pitcher in the major leagues. The notion that Fiers came out of nowhere is laughable too. He succeeded at every level in the minor leagues. The unusual thing about him was that he was drafted just days short of his 24th birthday. Look, the Brewers always walk a fine line. They need guys to stay healthy and perform to their capabilities. If they do, they can contend. If they don't, they won't. That's true of most of baseball. It's impossible to know in February who is going to end up starting games. Heck one or two guys on somebody else's roster right now could figure in.
  13. It will be interesting to continue to watch the relative rankings of Clint Coulter vis a vis Kyle Schwarber. Coulter's yet to crack a top 100, and Schwarber's a consensus top 100 if not top 50. Is there really that much separating these two? Schwarber's offense has been more impressive but in a much smaller sample and he's played mostly OF.
  14. I wish I shared your confidence in A-Ram. But I see a guy who can't run who'll probably put up numbers similar to what Paul Konerko did in 2013: .244/.313/.355 with 12 HR and 54 RBI. He's at the age where guys hit the wall and he was hitting it hard last September. On the other hand, you are really underrating Gennett. Until he pulled his calf muscle he was having a one heck of a year. No reason to think he won't be productive playing every day healthy. Davis and Segura are capable of good seasons as well.
  15. I still say the wild card in all of this is Henderson. If he shows up strong and healthy in spring training, the Brewers have him, Broxton and Perez all with significant closer experience to choose from to close and their bullpen looks a lot deeper than in did a month or two ago.
  16. A more competitive Padre team should make it more difficult for wild card to come out of West. Kind of sorry Cubs didn't get Shields. The one thing that could derail them is loading up on 30 something FA pitchers for big money who all go bad at once.
  17. The problem with batting Ramirez 4th, besides the fact that he's no longer much of a power source, is that he simply cannot run. You really don't want a guy who can't score from 1st on a double batting in front of doubles machines like Lucroy (53), Lind, (24 in 318 PA) or Davis (37). That's taking runs off the board. He should hit 7th where his singles will be productive and ahead of only Segura, who's not counted on to be a run producer. Lind should hit 5th, Davis 6th and Ramirez 7th against RHP. Against lefties, move Ramirez up one spot to 6th and let Maldonado hit 7th. Flip/flop Gennett and Segura. The top 4 vs RHP should be Gennett, Lucroy, Braun and Gomez in whatever order.
  18. In any "normal" FA year that would be hard to argue, but the free agent crop of premier starting pitchers next year is huge. They might not get Zimmermann, but unless they spend unwisely this year, they are going to have enough to be players in the $100mil/5 year range (maybe a bit more), and not all of those guys are going to those teams in a more of a buyers market.
  19. We don't know that Thornburg will continue to be in a relief role. He was ticketed to be a starter last year until the Garza signing off of 7 outstanding starts to close out 2013. They opted to move him to the pen starting last year because he was deemed too valuable to have pitching in AAA especially when Henderson wasn't quite right. Coming off an injury, it makes more sense this year to ease him back with a AAA stint, and why shouldn't that be starting? He could still revert to relief role if needed but also provide starter depth. As for Fiers, he's got 35 major league starts under his belt, a career ERA as a starter of 3.70. He's also got 42 AAA career starts with an ERA of 2.55. To call him a "complete unknown" is ridiculous.
  20. I'd rather they hold back from spending beyond this year and go hard after Zimmermann next year. He figures to still be an ace quality pitcher for 3 or 4 years. Even if they don't get him the FA crop next season is extremely deep. At best Shields figures to be a good number 2 for a couple seasons and then figures to level off as about a 4 by the second half of the contract.
  21. He might be worth a minor league deal and maybe you could start him out in AAA, and let him play some 1B to re-acquaint himself with the position and put up some numbers for his confidence in Colorado Springs. He's going to be brutal defensively anywhere you put him so he has to hit more than he has in recent seasons. Chicago radio discussion a few weeks back basically intimated he had no value whatsoever and that he might have a nice career....in Japan!
  22. Looking at Phillies depth chart that has Sizemore as RF, Parra would be a great bet to be a regular there and would offset a significant amount of money this year. All the Brewers would need to do is convince them of Parra's trade deadline value. Brewers could toss in a prospect outside their top 20 and I'd be fine with it.
  23. Protection if Henderson isn't ready to go. It's in the class of the Rockies signing Axford. Read that his velocity was highest since his big 2010. He didn't allow a run in 7 September appearances. Maybe he found something.
  24. I still think the health of Henderson plays into this. With apparently no other teams seriously showing interest, they can wait right up until beginning of the season. Even with a healthy Henderson, they can still use another late inning guy, but maybe they don't need a pure closer who's expensive.
  25. Yeah like he did in his 7 starts in 2013 when the 3rd time through the order, they swatted him around for a .205/.311/.205 line against him. That's right he faced 46 hitters the 3rd time through and not one of them recorded an extra base hit against him. How about pitch count wearing him down? Hitters were 7 for 39 (.179 ave) again with zero extra base hits from pitch 76 on. Thornburg was a completely different pitcher when he started in 2013. He had become a pitcher rather than a thrower and was using all his pitches. When moved the pen last year, he just rared back and fired mostly high heat. It worked for about a month but then you could see he'd lost a bit of zip, and he started losing command and zip both telltale signs something was bothering him.
