  1. Someone could call about Estrada if a starter goes down somewhere and the Brewers will listen but won't get much back. I don't see the Brewers shopping unless Henderson can't make it back. Morneau might well be a target, but in December.
  2. Was out of reach yesterday so couldn't comment. I agree with most posters but want to add that Gomez has been showing signs he needs a breather. His AB's the past week have been bad. Haniger was destined to be a trade piece sooner or later. He was blocked here until 2017 when he'll be 26. By 2017, Taylor should be ready. There are other CF prospects behind him too.
  3. Cardinal fans put rosy spin on everything Cards do. They loved Schumacher when he was there too.
  4. If a guy with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP who's a FA after this year can return a prospect like Ramsey, what would a guy with a 4.92 ERA and a 1.275 WHIP and controllable for one more year be worth in a deal? Doug, get on the phone and start selling Estrada!
  5. Wow. Ramsey was a number one pick and he's putting up good numbers at AA, albeit at age 24. Masterson has been, well, bad this year and he's a FA after this year. Case of Cardinals thinking their uniform is special and they can magically turn Masterson back into the guy he was last year I suppose and if he does, then they might be able to get him to take a QO this winter. Seems a bit desperate to me. Masterson's been worse than Estrada this year. His walk rate is very high.
  6. Toronto isn't going to let him go, unless they get something they need more back. I don't think anyone on that potential lists would interest them or be available. Estrada's no better than any of their 5 starters.
  7. Trading Nelson now would be the equivalent of the Brewers having traded Gallardo in July 2007. Both were 2nd round picks. Yes Nelson is 4 years older now than Gallardo was, but he was a pick out of college and needed some development time. True also that the rest of the rotation is better now than it was in 2007, but the team back then could have used a true ace too and ultimately the Cubs overtook them. Still having Gallardo from 08 until now has been a plus and he's been a key contributor on 2 playoff teams.
  8. They could ease him back by going with 13 pitchers for a couple weeks. I eventually think Estrada is going to get dealt most likely though in an August deal after clearing waivers. That would make room.
  9. Exactly. Have you noticed that many of these prospects we have traded for Sabathia, Greinke, Marcum were pretty overhyped by many here and about half didn't turn out to be what they expected them to be, or developed very late? The Brewers didn't trade any top major league ready starting pitching prospects to get Sabathia, or Marcum. Zach Jackson, Rob Bryson were throw-ins in the Sabathia deal. Jeffress had issues, and Odorizzi was still in A ball, and they were replaced by Pena and Hellweg a year later anyway. Nelson has stuff very similar to Peralta and he dominated AAA like no other starter at that level in baseball this season. Those guys do not come along often especially in Milwaukee. It's one thing to deal Nelson for two seasons of Price, the second of which you can deal him. Its another to deal him for a two month playoff run that they could still lose anyway, for a guy who won't even bring them a compensation pick when he leaves (unlike Sabathia).
  10. The problem is the only position where an upgrade makes sense is 1B and the available names there aren't any better than what they have. Unless they were to suddenly move Braun to 1B and pick up a Byrd or a Rios, all they hope to do is find an upgrade to Schafer as bench bat and 4th OF. The lineup is capable enough, it just needs to start taking better approaches.
  11. Awful approaches at the plate by almost the entire lineup the last few days. Time to get Gomez out of the leadoff spot. I knew they were in trouble when he fanned in the first last night. Against a more patient team, Cobb would have walked at least 6 or 7 guys.
  12. Nelson is just too valuable to give up for a rental, even a guy that increases the odds of winning in the postseason. That has buyer's regret all over it. Sabathia at least had draft pick compensation tied to him and the pitchers the Brewers gave up in the deal were throw ins. The big guy in the deal was LaPorta who was stuck behind Fielder. With the price of pitching what it is, the Brewers just cannot afford to give up talent like Nelson just as he's emerging as a big league pitcher. My Gallardo suggestion was thinking out of the box admittedly but since the Brewers don't have a top positional prospect at AAA who's currently blocked ala LaPorta in 2008, how are you going to attract Lester? The guys at Brevard are good, but not sure they are centerpiece material at this point. Jungmann isn't either nor are other pitching prospects in the system outside of Nelson. Thornburg might be if he were healthy but he's not. I know Boston says it wants "prospects" but historically Boston's been a team that retools every year. Gallardo would be fit in their rotation next year, a rotation that needs major re-hauling.
  13. that will never happen in a million years. first, trading a top 3 SP for another top 3 SP doesnt happen. second, trading a player with an option like Gallardo for a player hitting FA makes no sense. third, adding a prospect on top of gallardo to get 2 months of Lester makes even less sense. your proposal is a fleecing of the Brewers with the mention of them also getting Lester back next year. Okay...Gallardo for Lester straight up. I believe Nelson's fully capable of matching the innings Gallardo would give them the rest of this year and that torts is the key. Gallardo's a 3 or a 4 on a good team. Nelson is capable of provided that type of production now. Lester is a clear number one. Boston is a team that retools. It doesn't rebuild. They'd look at Gallardo as 2015's version of Jake Peavy, only younger and more likely better. Yes the Brewers would lose Gallardo for 2015, but they'd also save the $13 million that could and probably would be spent elsewhere (1B or pitching?). They also have starters in the wings in Thornburg and Will Smith with good stuff. Lester would give the Brewers that ace down the stretch and into the postseason. Gallardo's 3 or 4 spot in next year's rotation can be filled. There's no easy way to find an ace for this year's team.
  14. It's hard to trade Thornburg while he's on the DL. No way would I deal Nelson for Lester. How about Gallardo and a prospect for Lester? Boston would be getting a proven major league starter they can project in their 2015 rotation and they'd still have the option of bringing back Lester.
  15. If the Brewers were to make a move for a starting pitcher who would be a perceived upgrade on Nelson, then Nelson would be a part of that trade. He is not getting shifted to the pen, and no team is going to trade us a starting pitcher who is (right now) better than Nelson unless they get Nelson back in the trade. Unless we swing a major, David Price-type trade, I think our rotation is set. That leaves 1B, the bullpen and the bench as the only real positions where we could do something. With Jeffress up, Henderson and Thornburg likely returning, and Estrada now in the pen, I don't think we'll make a move for a reliever. That leaves either 1B or bench, neither of which will probably be a very major move. I agree with that though I wouldn't be shocked if Estrada is dealt this week to a team that might think he has some value in 2015 starting. Cubs have acquired guys like him with the thought of flipping them. They could do that again. Room has to be made for Henderson.
  16. I like your 2015 rotation idea, but I'm not on board for giving Price a long term deal. He could break down at any time like any other pitcher. Either he'll lead them to another playoff berth in 2015, or bring back young talent in a deal a year from now. In my mind, if Nelson is dealt for Price, they'd still have to let Gallardo go next year to pay the $20 million or so for Price and I'd think Smith would make a nice replacement. So my 2015 rotation would be Price, Lohse, Peralta, Garza, and Smith or Thornburg (assuming Thornburg isn't part of the deal). I think Brewers see the big picture as one where they can contend for a year or two, then take two or three years and build back up to that point again as opposed to winning 4-5 years in a row. 2014-15 might be the time.
  17. The guy I would hang on to at all costs is Taylor. He is Gomez' heir apparent. They have young talent at SS and 2B under control at major league level for quite a while and Arcia isn't the only minor league middle infielder that has a chance. As for Coulter, I see him as still a bit of a hit or miss. By the way if Nelson is traded, I'd strongly consider turning Smith back into a starter going into 2015. Heck, maybe Rays value Smith over Nelson??
  18. Nelson was hitting 97 on occasion yesterday and working consistently at 94-95. His ceiling is pretty similar to Peralta's, at least a #2 with an outside shot at #1. Nelson's upside is quite high.
  19. Taveras has struggled for the Cardinals and doesn't appear to be as major league ready as everyone thought. Nobody's mentioned Khris Davis as a possibility in a Price deal That would leave a hole in LF that would have to be filled but there are short term solutions for corner OF types. I think the Brewers have the pieces to make a very nice offer centered around Nelson and they could move Price next year or ride him to the 2015 playoffs too. I'm not sure I'd do it, but Attanasio has the track record so anything's possible though unless they take 2 of 3 from Rays, I think Price stays put. One big thing would be keeping him away from St. Louis. Brewers' system has taken clear strides forward this year. A Price deal would definitely negate some of those gains but if you project the Brewers into the playoffs, having him as the ace give them a decent chance to get pretty far.
  20. Duda has become a core player for Mets who are offensively challenged. No chance.
  21. Halton has hit .306/.353/.451 since May 1st. I would hope a strong finish to his season at Nashville will earn him a 40 man spot and a September call up.
  22. Offense is down all over baseball. The Padres are hitting .218 as a team. There isn't a team in baseball that doesn't have players performing at levels similar to Schafer. True, but does that mean that the Brewers should settle for incompetence while someone else goes to the World Series? I'm all for adding a bench bat, but if a deal isn't there, it's not worth getting all worked up over. The fate of this team is more in the hands of its regulars and pitching staff. The last bat on the bench rarely is a difference maker. Schafer's gotten a few key hits here and there but on balance he's not done well, but it hasn't affected the team to this point.
  23. Offense is down all over baseball. The Padres are hitting .218 as a team. There isn't a team in baseball that doesn't have players performing at levels similar to Schafer. That's especially true of bench guys that are lucky to get 5 AB's per week, usually against premier relievers throwing mid to upper 90's. Schafer has 90 career major league hits. Just guessing but I bet that's 90 more than any of us.
  24. I'd rather have Nava but his price might be a bit higher.
  25. Brewers are 2nd in the NL in virtually all offensive stats (behind the Rockies). If they stay relatively healthy, I don't see that changing the last 2 months. A bench tweak might help some, but it's not a critical need. The big move on the pitching staff has already been made (Nelson for Estrada). They need a healthy Henderson, or to add a veteran right handed reliever if not him. Standing pat isn't going to bother me.
