  1. Paying even a small portion of his remaining deal, say $2.5 million per year, might preclude the Brewers from making a run at better options. You could get Howard's current production from AAA guys. I don't even see him as an upgrade over Overbay for this season. Of course an argument could be made for picking him up and this is what it is: His slide really hasn't been gradual. It occurred suddenly between 2011 and 2012 when he missed significant time due to injury. He also missed significant time last year but rebounded a bit. This year he's been healthy and he was back playing virtually every day for the first time in 3 years. But now at 34, he might be a lot more productive playing 4 days a week and with Reynolds around, that's what he could do with the Brewers. It is amazing that he's got 60 RBI. I'm starting to waiver on my first thought. At a very cheap price it might be worth a try.
  2. He has a really nice OBP-heavy OPS, & has his whole career. He hits lefties & righties. There is nothing overrated about him, & he would absolutely be a difference-maker in our lineup. Swapping his .279/.395/.456/.851 2014 line in for the .220/.300/.364/.664 line the Brewers have gotten so far from 1B would be a massive improvement. Saying anything otherwise is just not being objective -- seriously... a nearly 100-point jump in OBP isn't a difference maker? Let's be honest here. As a throw-in, he's been stronger in the 2nd halves of seasons, & sports an OPS north of 1.000 for the month of September on his career. The Red Sox will reload for 2015 so I don't see them parting with Napoli anyway. Napoli's a good offensive player but the top 5 in the Brewer batting order are pretty good. Where you going to hit Napoli, 6th? A lot of those walks he takes there would result in him being stranded. He's a clogger once he does get on. Brewers could use a lefty bat with some pop to use in place of Davis or when Braun needs a day off.
  3. Dodgers have weaknesses. Their offense has underachieved, with only two guys in the lineup with OPS over .800. They are getting very little from the catcher position. Giants are more well rounded, and could very well win that division. Ideally St. Louis and Dodgers meet in WC game with one knocking out the other. Pittsburgh could even sneak in there and knock the Cards out completely.
  4. Phillies are actually considering eating $60 million and just cutting him after this season. He just appears done to me.
  5. While MA has said they would take on some salary in a deal, I don't see them taking on Napoli's contract. He's just not that much of a difference maker (has the same number of RBI as Reynolds) and the $16 million for 2016 would preclude them from bringing back Ramirez. My feeling is they are bargain hunting for lefty swinging 4th outfielders, hence the scouting of Philly (Sizemore) and Boston (Nava). Nava brings the bonus of being able to play 1B and is a switch hitter (though much better from the left side) too and after a very slow start, has picked it up considerably. A big Brewer concern is how Davis will perform in the heat of a race. Right now they could use some insurance.
  6. Trade options are Prado at 3B and Morneau at 1B. Combined they'd make $17.75 million next year. That's less than $4 million more than Ramirez alone. Prado is owed $22 million over the next two years. He should be available for not a ton of talent in return if Brewers pick up his entire salary. I think it's better than 50-50 that they keep what they have in Ramirez, but all is not lost if they don't. I would hope Melvin's explored what it would take to get other guys.
  7. I'd like to see them make a run at Sandoval myself or a lefty hitting 1B who's a clear upgrade. I would think they'd re-sign Reynolds and move him back to 3B if they have to pay a premium for a Victor Martinez or Adam LaRoche to play 1B. If they can get a Morneau who's reasonably priced in a trade, they'd have room for Ramirez too. There's definitely a possibility Ramirez returns though.
  8. I think they've gone 25 - 11 last 36 games. It will be interesting to see what they do. ESPN reported on Monday that the Rays considered themselves back in it not just in the wild card but in the AL East and they've won every game since. They've got guys who've been part of playoff teams on that roster. Unless they tank in the next week, they'll hold on to their guys. Price can be traded in the offseason. The guys picking the Cardinals to win now are the same guys that picked the Brewers to finish 4th before the season. I put little stock in their analysis. If the Brewer rotation pitches to their capabilities, and the bullpen gets settled, the Brewers are right there.
  9. Just when you think they might as well dump him, Reynolds shows why they got him in the first place.
  10. That would be my guess as well. Sizemore is an improvement over Schafer with the stick and can still play CF if needed. Brewers haven't gotten the production out of the 4th OF spot and you can bet Melvin's been eyeing cheap veterans who might be available. Unless the Brewers have had secret conversations about moving Braun to 1B and they are eyeing Byrd, I think it's Sizemore.
  11. Hasn't Wagner earned a promotion to Huntsville for the final 6 weeks? What more can he prove at Brevard? Wagner has had high GB/FB ratio in his career which might appeal to Rockies. A trade piece for Justin Morneau perhaps?
  12. I'd bet their scouting Grady Sizemore. The only reason Philly picked him up was to see if a couple good weeks could generate trade interest.
  13. Barney's natural position is SS. He moved to 2B to accommodate Castro. He was a better hitter in 2011, when the Cubs had a little better lineup that included Ramirez, Soriano, and Byrd.
  14. When all is said and done this year Braun will be closer to 30 HR than 19, but ESPN will ignore that.
  15. Do the umpires actually get the sound from the telecasts when reviewing a play? The Reds announcers are homers and could see as well as anyone the ball clearly hit the bat, but never said so. Frankly I think it was all an act that it never hit his hand either.
  16. The Cubs have DFA'd Darwin Barney. Barney's not all that bad offensively vs. LHP: .267 BA and .700 OPS career vs. Lefties. This year he's hitting .293 vs. lefties. For those looking to dump Weeks, keep in mind, he's much better defensively than Rickie too and can also play SS. He's picked it up lately too, going 15 for 39 in July.
  17. ESPN was saying this morning that after a 5 game winning streak, Rays consider themselves still in it in the AL East. Might be up to the Brewers to deal them a knockout blow next week.
  18. I don't see them using a young player like Rivera in that type of role. I see Gennett gradually being used more against left handed starters. He's only facing lefty specialists now who's only job is to get lefty hitters out and that's making his numbers look worse vs. LHP. He's a good enough hitter that if he sees enough lefties, he'll hit them too. There's nothing in his approach that is flawed. He likely presses some, knowing he needs to get his numbers better, but Gennett is a quality hitter. They'll certainly have a righty swinging utility guy, hopefully one with good splits vs. lefties, on the roster to spell Scooter on occasion, and that's fine. Scooter's not a big guy and it's tougher on little guys playing every day. But it will be a vet or a guy like Bianchi. Eventually, down the road, I'd look for Chris McFarland to emerge as a potential successor to Scooter once he approaches FA. McFarland has been wearing out lefties in a small sample. Perhaps there will be some platooning at some point with those two. Some interesting comments from Thom Brennaman last night during the Reds telecast about Gennett. He said Gennett "stole the job from Weeks by performing at such a high level when afforded the opportunity" and that the general consensus from scouts on Gennett that he was just a tad short of major league caliber skill-wise has been proven emphatically wrong. Having the luxury of being out of market and being able to listen to the opposing telecasts on extra innings, I've heard plenty of praise for Scooter from broadcasters, especially from division foes who've seen him a lot.
  19. Reds are on the brink of collapse. It's time to end their misery...and sweep them out of town. Yes, their pitching is still solid, but loss of Votto and Phillips should doom them.
  20. Estrada is very expendable if they could find a team that wants him. I certainly wouldn't put him in the "here to stay" category. Yeah he got through 5 2/3 the other night but they weren't exactly clean innings, and the farther he is away from starting the less stretched out he'll be. He'll likely be non-tendered this winter anyway. I'm fine with Kintzler handling long relief role along with Gorzelanny. Kintzler just needed to get out of key late inning role.
  21. "Will anything cause a move to happen to get Weeks off the Brewers" The Giants are so desperate for help at 2B, they signed Uggla to a minor league deal. Would a fall back for them a deal to get Weeks? Several other teams are reportedly scouring the 2B market. Thought it was a curious move for Brewers to add Falu back to 40 man roster last week and make an obviously very temporary move on Henderson to the 60 day today. Do they see Falu as needed depth should Weeks depart? Wishful thinking I realize.
  22. Well since Henderson presumably will be back in a few days, the question that begs answering it whose 40 man spot will that take up? Is there a deal in the works to unload Weeks or Estrada since there is a market for 2B and back end starters who aren't expensive.
  23. I'm all for replacing Wooten. Should have been done weeks ago. They apparently couldn't wait on Henderson's return and that's rather curious though. Couldn't believe how Schroeder would continually gloss over Wooten's struggles every time he entered a game. Why do Brewer announcers have such low standards anyway? A guy has two decent outings and they are sold on him no matter what he does after that. I guess that's a topic for another thread.
  24. I'm more concerned with the RH portion of the first base platoon. Reynolds has 2 RBI in the last month and his OPS for the season vs. LHP is .594. I'd rather have Jeff Baker and his career .861 OPS vs. lefties included with Cishek. Baker could either replace Weeks in the 2B platoon or Reynolds in the 1B platoon. He also can play 3B. Another option is bringing up Halton. Halton has hit .322/.365/.475, an .840 OPS vs. lefties this year at AAA.
  25. I'd have some interest in Parmalee because he can play both the OF and 1B and he still might have some upside. He's not much if any of an upgrade over Overbay, but he might flash considerably more power in Miller Park than Target Field and his career road splits aren't all that bad: .262/.329/.427. Plus he fares decently against both righties and lefties. He's also controllable and cheap and if he didn't win the starting job next year, he has bench versatility.
