  1. No, it sounds like he, his lawyers, and the MLBPA realized that MLB had enough evidence against him and they worked out a deal. If the MLBPA didn't help Braun, he probably would've been hit harder. I heard it mentioned 2 different places that the key evidence against him were incriminating texts he sent. If I had to guess, he stuck with his "consulting" story, thinking no way were his texts retrievable. Once he found out they had them, he knew he was toast.
  2. It's not a matter of his being worth his contract, though there is a legit question about whether he will. His performance this year certainly wasn't. Nagging injuries are just going to go away now that he is clean? It's about trust. Besides part of his contract amount is not just to produce on the field but be an ambassador for the franchise. Maybe if he comes clean and details everything he has a chance for redemption. But as of now, I don't see it.
  3. fondybrewfan, Braun was more than just a great player. He is/was the face of the franchise. Sometimes preserving the brand trumps baseball sense. Baseball is about selling tickets. You don't do that when your best player has a cloud over his head. He'll still likely fetch a solid return. They'll free up salary to spend on some solid FA player ala Mike Morse who has a career 1.207 OPS in Miller Park. No they won't get full value back in a baseball sense, but they'd be removing a stain from the franchise.
  4. Hang the "For Sale" sign on him this winter, take the best offer and move on. He should be done as a Brewer. A lot of Brewers fans (me included) stuck their necks out and supported him through all of this. That's a broken trust that can never be repaired. In other cities, they won't feel the personal betrayal so much. Fans will be eager to overlook his transgressions. I too believe he started this back in the Miami days. Hence I don't totally absolve the Brewers for a lack of due diligence prior to making him a high draft pick. You are going to commit millions on a guy, spend a couple hundred thousand and hire a private investigator to thoroughly check a guy.
  5. Yeah but for the most part the Brewers played Sunday with the JV team. Peralta's been dominating over his last 4 starts, whatever the competition. Heaven forbid they try to win next year. In fact what the heck are they doing trying to win games now? Don't they know they should be laying down for a top draft pick. For all we know Melvin will sabotage their 2018 season by acquiring a bunch of good young prospects now then turn around and trade them for bonafide major league talent to make a run in 2014 (sarcasm).
  6. Mark Buehlre type perhaps? Quick worker, gets quick outs, not overpowering with the FB.
  7. It's July 22nd. It's a little early to write off the entire season as "dismal". May was a dismal month and put them out of contention early so it seems as if the entire season has been dismal. But there have been plenty of positives. Peralta has been compared more than once to a young Bartolo Colon. The old Bartolo Colon isn't bad either.
  8. Good question! Lefty starters are in short supply in the organization. He was drafted at 22 and basically skipped low A, so his age shouldn't be too much of a factor.
  9. I think they've told teams to bring offers for the starters, but I think their asking price is high and it's not all that likely teams are going to meet it. That's why the rumors out there are focusing on the Garza's and Peavy. Remember Gallardo On the other hand, they are almost certain to deal K-Rod and Gonzalez, and perhaps one other reliever. Gallardo is still only 27, and this is really his first "off" year. Keeping him isn't the worst idea. He could bounce back to his form of sub 4 ERA next year and if not help the Brewers contend, then he might have more trade value than he has now with an option for 2015 that's not outrageous.
  10. I will concur K-Rod will be the first dealt. I just have an inkling he'll be packaged with Aoki for a pretty decent return. Gonzalez is the only guy besides K-Rod that I feel is certain to be dealt but I think he'll go right at the deadline.
  11. Not a bad idea. Andy Dirks hasn't given them a whole lot this year at the top of their order. It would depend on how much of an upgrade they would consider Aoki.
  12. I wouldn't limit who the Brewers get back in a trade to a pitcher if it meant taking that much back less in talent. Especially if we can get a 3B prospect. Amen, especially for relievers. Do I really think two Brewer relievers will get them Castellanos? Not likely, but I'd make that move in an instant over one that nets the same type of pitching prospects the Brewers have now in their system. Three names that Detroit has that could hold some interest are Drew VerHagen, Kyle Lobstein, and Warwick Saupold. Not bad, but not in your top of the line category either. Lobstein is a lefty and the Brewers are short lefties in the high minors.
  13. Which goes to show that with a pitching staff that's flyball/strikeout dominant, infield defense isn't that critical. With a staff of groundball pitchers, it takes on added importance. As bad as Hellweg's first big league taste was, the defense was horrendous behind him.
  14. Are you an orthopedist? I'm not either, but surgery is supposed to correct a problem not render him a cripple at age 31. I think it's way premature until we see him to speculate where he can play. Knees can and often are rehabbed.
  15. I believe is value is negative. Even if he has a relatively healthy final 2 months, that contract for 2014 will be hard to move this winter much less now. The Brewers really have no choice but to hold on to him, hope his knee responds and that he either helps them contend in 2014, or does enough that someone will rent him next July when the contract won't be an issue.
  16. Clint Terry: 25 K's, 1 BB in 17 2/3 IP Time to see what he can do against more experienced competition perhaps?
  17. A lot depends on how many players teams sell off in the next 2 weeks. I'm thinking anywhere from 4 to 8 when all is said and done.
  18. If I was them, I'd rather roll with a Schumaker/Ellis platoon than trade for a highly overpaid Weeks. I didn't say they would want Weeks only that they would take him if they also got the guy they really wanted and didn't have to give up as much in return. In other words, Melvin says we'll give you Axford for C level prospect, if you take Weeks in the deal too. Otherwise it's going to cost you a B+ level guy. The Brewers would also likely get back Ellis to even out the money a bit. Ellis has an option that likely the Dodgers won't pick up for next year, so they might see Weeks as a guy they can live with for 2014.
  19. All you need to know about journalistic standards these days is summed up in the news report listing the pilots "names" of the Korean air liner crash in SF. For those that didn't see it, I suggest looking it up. The woman reported that they had confirmed the names with the NTSB. I laughed for 2 days. ESPN is about on that level.
  20. I think the Dodgers make the most sense. It's not so much what they'll give back but I think the Brewers can get them to take Weeks along with the pitcher (I'm thinking Axford is the most likely) and that's a huge win in my book.
  21. Any revamping of the IF has to start with replacing Rickie Weeks.
  22. Slow starts buried them the last 2 years. Not coincidentally, Rickie Weeks has been awful in April and May both years. I would feel a lot better about their chances in 2014 if someone else were playing 2B on opening day 2014. A lot depends on the health of Ramirez and Hart who I think they will bring back if he shows he's fully healed but those guys make the lineup a heck of lot deeper. Granted those are 2 pretty big "ifs".
  23. The problem in assessing guys like Halton is that he goes like 1 for 12, and Roenicke sticks Yuni back in there. Francisco had a little power surge there for a week or so, but isn't his natural position 3B? He doesn't look real natural at 1B and he can't hit lefties. Morris' OPS is down considerably from AA to AAA. It's still okay and the HR totals are there, but there's certainly questions whether he's more Jeff Liefer than he is Adam LaRoche. Hart is a bit of a gamble and even with an incentive laden deal, it's going to cost more to keep him. But if he can prove he's healthy, then it's possible he can put up numbers approaching his career norms.
  24. Mantei Teo didn't take a "bereavement" leave when his loved one died! Oh wait.
  25. The only people talking about a rebuilding strategy as a long term proposition are those on this and other sites. Melvin talks continually about making the team better in 2014. He's open to dealing to help make that happen but I don't think he's reached the point where he's going to do total rebuild ala the Cubs. Melvin is 61. Take it from a guy who's the same age. He's thinking 1-2 years ahead not 4-6, though getting a likely top 7 or so pick next year will help in that pursuit too. Lohse and Gallardo are still key pieces in the time frame Melvin is working within. The only way a complete rebuild happens is if Attanasio decides to take it that direction. If he does, then he'll replace Melvin.
