  1. Apparently they must believe that Kyles was not properly transmitting Kranitz' messages to the bullpen. Kyles wasn't the guy coming out of the dugout to talk to guys after they couldn't throw strikes. I'm going to think positively that they want Tunnell to replace Kranitz but that he needs some time familiarizing himself to the staff.
  2. Well Corey Hart would seem to be a great fit there, but I wouldn't do that deal.
  3. Mike Adams has slipped a bit this year, but he's a name on that list who might be a decent bullpen fit. I wouldn't go overboard signing bullpen guys but I'd lean to guys with a consistent record and leave some flexibility to trade for guys midseason.
  4. I look for the Brewers to shop for a $4-5 million guy to fill or compete with Narveson for the 5th spot. The perfect guy is Carlos Villanueva. He's 4-0 as a starter this year. He can also pitch out of the pen. That flexibility makes him attractive with so many young guys knocking on the door. I see them going with Gallardo, Fiers, and 2 of Estrada, Rogers, Thornburg or Peralta. If Estrada's not one of the 2, he'll go to the pen. For the 5th spot it will either be Narveson or a FA. Two other guys Melvin's had interest in the past are Correia and Jeff Francis. He might take a flyer on a guy coming off an injury on an incentive laden deal (that includes Marcum at this point). One longshot who could be little pricier is Brandon McCarthy.
  5. "If so, I'm not sure how to parcel out the blame. DM put the bullpen together. RR adjusted their roles." Was Bill Castro to blame when he was fired? Sure Melvin and Roenicke are partially responsible but their deals and relatively recent success have insulated them. What strikes me about this staff is that it leads the league in strikeouts and even the bullpen's K rates are fine. So why isn't the staff more successful? My theory is it comes down to 2 things. Fastball command and inability/unwillingness to pitch inside. One feeds off the other. Is this Kranitz not stressing it or not communicating his message? Or is it all on the pitchers? Hard to tell. But they can't dump everyone. But messages need to be sent. Look, I favor dumping guys selectively because ultimately what's happening is damaging the brand and that's something that nobody in business can allow to continue happening. This team was sold as a contender. Guys getting paid handsomely to make that happen have failed miserably. Heads need to role.
  6. For the record: Parra, K-Rod, Kranitz. I stand by all three. I've been critical of others too, but no I never called for Weeks to be cut.
  7. Fiers was good from day one. Marcum was good with Toronto. Loe? Seriously?
  8. The bullpen coach works under the pitching coach. The pitching coach isn't the "starting pitching coach". I'm not suggesting Kyle replaces Kranitz. I'd promote Dabney from Nashville.
  9. It's about accountability. Not only do they need to start dumping veterans in the pen, the pitching coach should go with them. Nothing he's trying is working.
  10. Yeah there is a lot of junk that gets traded. I dont like KRod the pitcher but he had a decent month prior to taking over the closers job so if he could do that again someone would take him. To Briggs - there is zero reason to let him go. He may not be very good but neither is the rest of our bullpen True the rest of the pen isn't good, but when somethings rotten, you have to start somewhere and nobody's been worse than K-Rod. What he did today in front of over 41,000 was to turn a nice feel good game around. That's 41,000 fans they need to keep buying tickets. Henderson's come up and not allowed a run. Stetter's been pitching well and deserves another shot. Jesus Sanchez had a 1.59 ERA at Huntsville and he hasn't allowed a run in 8 appearances at Nashville. Juan Perez wasn't this bad when he was here. Vargas has major league experience. Bring Peralta up too. These guys might not be a lot better, but at least it's different faces.
  11. I suggested that after the Philly disaster and no one agreed with me. There is absolutely no reason to keep him around. Subjecting K Rod to a full house of paying fans is ludicrous.

  13. I wouldn't rule out Narveson. Lets see how he looks next spring regards to his velocity and command. I know people are all jacked to see the young guys, but I'm not sure all of them are ready to match Narveson's effectiveness in 2010 and 2011. Forget ERA, Narvy had WHIPs of under 1.4 each of those 2 seasons. That's decent for a 4th starter, much less a 5th. Besides the Brewers are without a lefty in the picture. It's not like they can't get by with all right handed rotatation, but it helps to vary the look for opposing lineups, and the Reds are especially lefty swinging. I'm not sure on Marcum. The FA starting pitching list is a pretty long one. Many of those guys will not get long term deals due to their ages/injury history etc. Marcum for one year at $12 million might be a good deal, but other options could be better. If they decide to make another run at Greinke, then definitely not. Same goes for if they get serious on Josh Hamilton unless they deal Weeks or Ramirez first.
  14. I keep reading that Fiers isn't "ace material" whatever that means. I remember back in the day people said the same thing about Mike Caldwell. Then he proceeded to go 38-17 in 78 and 79. Believe me, Caldwell was the ace of Bambi's Bombers. I define an "ace" as a guy who when he's pitching you are almost certain of getting a well pitched game. With 8 quality starts out of 10, including 7 in a row, I'm pretty certain when Fiers takes the mound, the Brewers will be getting a well pitched game. So for right now at least, Fiers is the Brewers ace.
  15. I agree but the problem is, he's going to project to have less power next year but the same OBP. .300/.410 is a more reasonable projection for him next year. Even with elite defense, not sure that justifies him being an everyday starter at any price. Are you talking about the same guy? Gomez is 6'4" 210 pounds and generates tremendous bat speed. His power numbers are up because a. He's not attempting as many bunts, and b. he's centering the ball more often and c. he's been hitting in front of Braun. He's always had a ton of power potential. We're just getting a taste of it now as he matures as a hitter. If he played every day, I have no doubt he'd hit around 25 home runs. Oh he will never hit .300 or post a .370 OPB but I can live with power, speed and defense. The combo of Aoki and Gomez is a good one.

  17. If the Brewers can't sign Greinke, they are now in better position to trade for another established starter. They've added depth to the upper level starting pitching, and a lot of teams covet those guys. I'm not overly excited about Segura. He should be okay.
  18. Except Quintana is considerably younger and left handed. Seriously though, he's walked 14 guys in 76 innings. If he'd been in the NL, he'd likely have 6-8 more K's too. Besides if strikeouts were a great measure of pitcher effectiveness, the Brewers would be contending as the are leading the league in K's. Pittsburgh meanwhile is 14th in K's and 5th in ERA. I agree he's more of a mid rotation type but those are pretty good numbers and in the AL to boot and no matter how small, he does have a major league record, and that is in his favor. I know the game he pitched against the Brewers he got some great defense to keep the Brewers off the board on some balls that were hit very well. That being said, he's pitched very well at home in a notorious pitchers park. I think the Sox could add a couple other "not quite" A prospects like a Carlos Sanchez, and maybe a major league reliever like a Nate Jones, and that's not a bad package.
  19. to jjfanec, Even if he had a decent month, he's not bringing back anything of substance in a waiver deal. If he continues to pitch like he has recently, it is going get ugly at Miller Park, and I mean ugly. You want to put paying customers through that? That's bad business. For that very reason I'd dump Parra too. There is a chance some team might give you a low level non prospect for Parra, so fine take it. Don't keep insulting fans by trotting him out there.
  20. Keeping him around for 2 months serves what purpose exactly? Sure they could release Parra too. I won't argue that there's other guys they could release, but the rest of this season needs to be about making decisions for 2013 and beyond. What they are going to keep running K-Rod out there in some hope that he'll recover enough form to get something back in a waiver deal? You don't put your fans through that.
  21. I would imagine they'd just release K-Rod at this point. Hopefully they'll make a few more changes and add Sanchez and Stetter. Nobody is saying these guys will be world beaters but heavens, they can't be worse.
  22. Sean Halton has 2 triples tonight. Morris isn't the only 1st baseman who's been on a tear.
  23. Axford? Heck he's making me long for Vinnie Chulk. Why wasn't he released after Monday's debacle?
  24. If you could get Quintana and Sanchez, that's not a bad return.
  25. White Sox have Ryan Kussmaul, a reliever at AA who's got a career WHIP of 0.921 with 252 K's in 210 innings. Don't have any idea how he throws but he's a Wisconsin native. They also have Carlos Sanchez, a Venezuelan middle infielder that just turned 20 last month and who was just promoted to AA Birmingham after hitting .315/.374/.395 in the Carolina league. He's 7 for 12 in his first 3 games at AA. If he's a legit SS (he's split time between SS and 2B in his career), maybe he'd make a nice piece. Another plus is he's a switch hitter.
