  1. Stearns has a lot of work to do in the winter. I don't see the upside in Houser. He'll be 28 in February and has all of about 170 major league innings. Lindblom is 33 and also has less than 200.
  2. I'd imagine Stearns checked in on Didi, but I'm pretty sure two reasons he mentioned liking Philly were the proximity to NY & his old manager Girardi was there. Tweet mentioning Brewers as runner up & Girardi playing a factor... Brewers must have given up on Didi. They dealt for Urias two weeks before Gregorius signed. This would be a much better team with Didi, Davies and Grisham than it is with Urias, Lauer and Garcia. You can argue well they would only have Didi for 60 games, but there was no way they knew that in December.
  3. Check the Brewer drafts under Stearns. He simply doesn't draft masher corner infielders or corner outfielders for that matter. Anywhere much less the early rounds. Worse, he unloaded the one guy in the system he inherited that could mash, Garrett Cooper, at the first sign he was a prospect. Same goes for corner OF prospects he inherited. He couldn't wait to unload Grisham. He made some nice cheap acquisitions, Aguilar, Ji-Man Choi, and Thames but never really committed to those guys. He traded Kris Davis for peanuts, because he couldn't imagine trying him at 1B or moving Braun there.
  4. Isn't Ryon Healy a better hitter than Vogelbach? Granted he hits RH, but his career numbers are better. Think about it, Stearns basically got nothing in return for Aguilar, who's 20 RBI this year would be 2nd on the Brewers. He lets Thames go. He signs Smoak who they give basically 6 weeks and now they've signed a guy who's hit about 100 points less than his weight for his career.
  5. Zach Davies is now 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA and a Whip under .9. Grisham might not be a budding star, but he's a solid middle of the order bat and would have been cheap for several more years. That trade looks awful especially if you add in what they had to pay to sign Garcia to replace Grisham. The Lindblom experiment looks like a complete bust. He's the same pitcher he was in his previous major league stints. I'm afraid the Brewers have become the Angels. Stearns has fallen into the same trap Melvin did over and over again. Create a bunch of holes elsewhere to correct one. Oh yeah and the spot that needed fixing, offense at SS seems to have fixed itself with improvement from Arcia.
  6. There's a lot of uncertainty about revenue for next year even assuming the virus is under control. A 34 year old reliever even at a modest price is a luxury until the picture is clearer. Adding multiple low level arms with short draft makes sense.
  7. Yeah, they received the #26 prospect in baseball at the time, who didn't make his MLB debut until two seasons later. There was no 'MLB proven talent' that headlined that deal. That deal was made at the trade deadline in 2016. At the end of 2016, Torres was consensus top 10 prospect and would make his debut in April 2018 barely over one season later. Besides Chapman was a two month rental. Hader has 3 full seasons of control after this year. Any team trading for Hader could in theory get nearly as much back by trading him again two years for now.
  8. Sogard slugged .457 last year for Jays and Rays. What happened to that guy? I though he had found something? He's "slugging" .203 this year. That's worse than pitcher's type production. Maybe Brewers need to change their name to Days or Ways? He needs to attack some of those meatball first pitch fastballs he's been taking all year. The other day, he took a third strike on a fastball right down the middle.
  9. Imagine how little they must think of him and Tyrone Taylor if they can’t get a shot while guys who’ve been hitting like trash and a couple utility infielders take up most of the CF/RF/DH ABs Taylor had a terrific August in 2019 at San Antonio, came up in September and went 4 for 10. I don't know why they wouldn't give him a look. On the other hand, Stearns has always discounted guys acquired in the Melvin regime. This team's going nowhere. Heck if he did hit, he might be useful in a deal or you've found a cheap 4th or 5th outfielder.
  10. I've never been big on Nottingham. I wish they'd go with Freitas myself if only because their lineup so offensively inept. I'm not sure Nottingham can secure the backup job over a month of 50 or 60 AB's. Feliciano and Henry had a huge year of development time taken away, so there still a ways away too. Bottom line, I'm almost certain the Brewers will be in the market for a veteran RH hitting backstop and Pina fills that bill as well as any.
  11. Phelps is not elite. Never has been. At 33 he's not turning into an elite reliever. Many questions regarding revenue in 2021. A lot of fans are turned off by all sports right now. I believe the market for guys similar to Phelps will be depressed.
  12. I'd have a lot more respect for the Brewer players and organization if they contributed some of their wealth to rebuild the businesses in Kenosha that were destroyed by rioters and they acknowledged the need for all residents to follow instructions coming from police officers.
  13. White Sox bullpen has been a strength. They aren't desperate and even if they were, they're not dealing any of Moncada, Jimenez, or Robert and that's what the Brewers would want for Hader.
  14. The first one that immediately comes to mind is the last one in Pit' date=' when he was warm and a lefty was up with a one-run lead in the 8th and a runner on with 2 outs. If that isn’t a spot to use your dominant LHP, I don’t know when is[/quote] Counsell made two mistakes in that inning. The first was bringing in Phelps instead of Williams. I know Phelps had been sharp, but he's the definition of a journeyman and Williams is the closer of the future with electric stuff including a changeup that he can neutralize LH batters with. But I totally agree Hader should have been brought in to face Polanco who's got a history of big hits against the Brewers. Especially to break a losing streak. Counsell has given Phelps a big role based on a couple early gutsy performances, but his track record doesn't scream lock down 8th inning guy much less a guy you can count on to close should you deal Hader.
  15. Our outfield depth currently consists of a 36 year old Braun, Yelich, Garcia (is anyone impressed by him?), Cain who will be 35 right after opening day next year, Corey Ray and Tyrone Taylor. If that group of outfielders impresses you in both quality and depth then I have a 1985 Yugo with your name on it. Amen to that though you could probably throw Mathias into the mix and Gamel too. By the way, even though his overall 2019 numbers don't pop out, Taylor finished last season with a late surge at AAA that was similar to the tear Grisham went on, was 4 for 10 in a few appearances in a pennant race in the majors, yet no look so far this year??? I get he was hurt in the spring and Mathias has shown he be a nice contact hitter, but I'd like to see more of Taylor who's got some power.
  16. I'd agree with that statement, but I also question the philosophy of thinking you can turn over more than half the roster and expect any type of team cohesiveness between a bunch of strangers. Yeah the pandemic didn't help and losing in front of empty stadiums is depressing but I get the feeling that most guys are just collecting paychecks.
  17. In other words, the cancel culture is much more entrenched so ruining a person's life and career over an offhand word or two is much more accepted. I'm not defending what he said, but he didn't assault anyone.
  18. Speaking of Yelich type players, what would it take to get Mike Yastrzemski from the Giants? Late bloomer, controllable. He's not going to come cheap but where are the Giants going with him?
  19. Pass. Chavis is basically Moustakas without the power. Huh? He hit 31 HR and slugged .563 in minors in 2017. He hit 9 HR in under 200 PA in 2018 and slugged .538 Last year he hit 18 major league HR and 7 at AAA. I can see passing on him if Arcia and Urias show their the SS/3B combo for the next couple years, but not because he lacks power.
  20. It's very, very early but Urias looks like the real deal and Arcia has swung the bat like he has no intention of surrendering his SS job. One could paint a pretty rosy picture of an infield of Urias, Arcia, and Huira all in there for a few more years. They sure all looked like core players this weekend.
  21. What would it take to get Michael Chavis? He was primarily a 3B in the minors but he's blocked by Devers. Has the kind of power bat from right side that could be a nice fit on a corner infield spot and those are the biggest needs.
  22. I suppose it came down to keeping Morrison another day or two until Braun returns or letting him go now. Hopefully when he does, let Grimm go and get down to a more manageable 15 pitchers.
  23. This lineup is putrid. Someone tell me why they couldn't use Scooter or even Melky Cabrera? I can't find them on anyone's 60 man.
  24. Suter could end up among league leaders in wins and never start a game. He's got 5 wins in the Brewers last 27 games.
