  1. Interesting lineup according to USA today: Gwynn CF First ML start Cirillo 3B Just seems like first ML start Fielder 1B Gross LF Jenkins RF Graff 2B Ahead of Hall, are you kidding me? Hall SS Miller C Ohka P
  2. Mench in Texas: 42 K's in 320 AB's, approximately 1 in 8 ratio As a Brewer: 6 K's in 14 AB. Would make Branyan blush.
  3. Once again, the only two plus .300 hitters sit. What is the guy (Yost) thinking? I know I'm thinking we missed the boat on Leyland.
  4. I cannot believe everyone has Davis on their roster. Have you guys watched him pitch this year? I'd much rather use the $5 million to bolster the bullpen with a younger left hander and let Villanueva or a guy from a trade be in the rotation
  5. If Yost likes Bush in the pen so much, why wait until September? Recall Villanueva, and give him Bush's spot in the rotation so Bush can concentrate on relieving.
  6. Why oh why not use Helling there? Or even Capellan? Or Shouse? Helling has pitched 1/3 of an inning in 8 days.
  7. "why would you pay the kid that much money?" A. They have the money B. He had a lot of leverage. He is the star wide receiver on the highest profile college football team in the country which also happens to be the consensus number 1 team in the country. After 5 outings in the Northwest League, he's already up to the Midwest League, so there is some talent there.
  8. Let me preface this by saying I saw the last inning on MLB extra innings. First off, Turnbow had Bonds struck out with a curveball at the thigh in the inside half but the ump could not bring himself to ring him up with the crowd standing and howling. Hall made a horrible play on Finley's bouncer. Got himself in poor postion then made an olay move like he was trying to make the highlight reel. Could not see what happened on Durham's hit. Looked to me like it should have been an easy double play and the ball is behind Weeks. I wouldn't put this one on Turnbow. The offense shut down for 6 innings and Davis let them back in the game. Even Bush let a career minor league catcher take him deep.
  9. Gross has won the CF job the old fashioned way. He's earned it.
  10. Bunting against a guy who already had allowed 2 HR, and a line out by the pitcher. Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking.
  11. In regards to Gillespie, I never really understood the Brewer philosophy of taking top of the line college players that played against the top college programs and starting them in the Pioneer League, that has guys less than two years removed from high school or just a year removed from junior college. Yeah, I suppose they want them to taste immediate success and get comfortable with wood bats, but really I don't think it develops them to be facing lesser pitching than they often saw in college.
  12. "how do you make room for them in West Virginia..." Who said anything about West Virginia? Escpecially in the case of Gillespie, he's probably ready for Brevard. He's older than the guys at West Virginia anyway and I suspect he might be a better prospect than Hasan Rasheed or Freddie Parejo.
  13. Something tells me Cole Gillespie will not be spending too much more time in Helena.
  14. Steve Hammond with a two hit shutout for Huntsville tonight as Stars win 11-0. Nobody's talked much about Mr. Hammond probably because he's 24 and was drafted out of college (Long Beach). But the Brewers best pitcher Capuano was a lefty originally drafted out of college too and Hammond has put up impressive numbers ever since he was signed last year.
  15. No actually the Brewers played this weekend without due respect of their opponents. With all the frustrations the Cubs have been though anyone thinking they didn't want to regain self respect in this series by playing hard doesn't understand baseball. "The All Star break couldn't have come too soon" Apparently that's been the attitude of the Brewer players who looked focused on the break instead of the task at hand. A lot of people tend to coast the days leading up to a vacation. The manager needs to do whatever he can to keep them focused. Yost failed badly in this regard. I've said it over and over in various posts, but Davis never has been anything more than a .500 pitcher and he's past the point where improvement can be expected. For a small market team to throw money at him would be foolish especially one with a lot of good young arms nearing the top of the minors.
  16. Yost had to make that move. Chances are even Bush would surrender another run or two if he stayed in.
  17. Brewers scoreless streak: 14 innings. Brewer homerless streak: 35 innings. Jenkins homerless streak: 132 AB's
  18. I hope you're right Badger61, but with Harang followed by Arroyo, the Brewers are going to have to pick up the offense starting with Weeks, Prince and Hall who all need to get it going again. While on the subject of juicing up the offense, Ned has to get Cirillo in the lineup more.
  19. "If Yo absolutely dominates through July, is there any chance he goes to AAA yet this year?" AAA? If he absolutely dominates through July, it's going to be very tempting to see what he can do in the majors yet this year. The reports are that not only is he dominating hitters, but that he's showing poise well beyond his years and the level he's playing at. As for Eveland, I think he deserves another, longer look very soon. I thought he threw the ball fine when he was up but seemed to always let an inning get away from him when he was a pitch or two from escaping. He's got the stuff to be a successful starter in the major leagues. He just needs to get over that hump I never remember the Brewers being this deep in young starting pitching. Jackson, Villanueva, De la Rosa, Eveland, Gallardo, Rogers, Inman, Parra, not to mention the baby Brewers. If half of them reach their potentials, it bodes very well.
  20. The 8th inning has become a real problem. Wise and Kolb are not doing the job. Acquiring bullpen help should be high on Melvin's list.
  21. I was at the game this afternoon. Nearly got a foul ball just before Capellan's huge inning ending K. Anyway, here's a few observations. Kolb was excellent. I think both he and Capellan have move ahead of Wise for the 8th inning chores. First hit allowed, he shattered the bat. The next one was ridiculous. I know there is a huge sentiment that Corey Hart needs to start at some point fairly soon but guys, his defense today was well, lacking. That fly ball that hit off Weeks glove, should have been an easy catch for Hart, but for some reason he didn't go after it aggressively and didn't call off Weeks. Kudos to Barnwell on his first major league hit. It was no cheapie and it was big. When I see Barnwell and think of all the comments about his not being a prospect I can't help but think of the old saying, "He's a baseball player". Nice addition to the club albeit a month overdue. I wouldn't use Hall to sacrifice. You're doing opponent a big favor.
  22. I think Helling gets a mulligan assuming he's okay physically. In the 3rd inning he didn't have any command or zip. It's basically spring training for him and could be the "dead arm" period. Villanueva just went about his business and didn't get rattled after the 2 HR. As Daron and Bill said, the first was bad pitch call by Miller and the second just good hitting by IROD.
  23. Yost should have learned lesson from the Cubs. You don't stick a guy out there against the best team in baseball who is basically in spring training. For those who forgot, they lit up Prior two days ago.
  24. I am reminded of the scene in "Field of Dreams", when Ray's brother in law sees the ghosts for the first time and says: "Don't sell this farm Ray". After watching the celebration (I got to see it on MLB extra innings), my only thought was: "Don't trade this guy Doug." Sign him. Spluge. Go in debt. Find some investors. Take up a collection, just sign him.
