  1. Am I the only one that sees an expanded role down the stretch for Jay Jackson? His peripheral stats are really quite good and unlike Albers and Guerra who at times struggle to put hitters away, Jackson has a nasty slider that gets swings and misses. I think he's settled in and his confidence is growing. Even though the lead was 6, it was nice to see him used in something other than mopup duty. Instead of Counsell just automatically going to the vets who've been up and down all year, he has options in Williams and Jackson that are pretty decent.

  4. The lesson from this is that spending an extra $5 million would have been well worth it. And with this team 5th in the NL in attendance and on pace to easily surpass 3 million, this was not the time to penny pinch.

  7. I don't think this year has been a total failure, but it shows how they can't afford to have guys they are counting on fail spectacularly or get injured. Shaw's lost year did open the door for Hiura though the decision to send Hiura back down after his first stint was costly as they failed to take advantage of an easy schedule in June and part of that was trying and failing to get Shaw going. I'm not so sure that even if all went as planned that they could have overcome the Dodgers or even the Braves or Nats in the playoffs. Right now I see the Nats as the main threat to the Dodgers. But they need to keep trying. Is Braun to first base the answer? Or should they make a move and try and get a guy like Jose Abreu and keep a outfield with 4 legit bats rotating?

  10. It'd be so great if he went back to the delivery he used pre-injury and could get the same type of movement he had then. I'm guessing he changed his delivery to prevent future shoulder issues. I don't know, I really couldn't see the difference in the delivery before and after, but the difference in the FB movement was very clear. Recent signs are encouraging. That lineup he went through included Albert Almora and David Bote. He fanned them both.
  11. I think Feliciano and Henry push each other. Will be interesting to see how both do in Biloxi next year. It wouldn't shock me to see them as Brewer catching tandem by 2022.
  12. Anyone know why Freitas hasn't played since Sunday?
  13. Suter looks more and more like Tommy John the pitcher every outing.
  14. I think you nailed it. There's a lot of luck involved in guys staying healthy, continuing to perform close to their peaks, etc. I think they need to add talent when and where they can, and not make stupid deals like unloading Aguilar for a fringe arm. Those kinds of deals are dumbfounding. There's a lot of work to be done shoring up the bullpen. Jeffress and Albers need to be replaced. I don't think they can count on Knebel until the second half of next year at best. They need to rethink their take on starting pitching and actually look to acquire an arm or two that can give them 6 solid innings.
  15. I know Sept 1st is just around the corner, but seems to me Suter might be needed on the major league roster right now.
  16. Hard to imagine his bat can heat up fast enough to be better PH option in September than Freitas. Yeah he can play 3B, but you going to give him that role over the popular good citizen Perez who's had a hit in all 3 of the games he's played since his return?
  17. Andrews is a good call. Hard to ignore a guy who's in AA barely a year after being drafted, and I'm sure the Brewers will want to see how his short frame plays against more elite hitters.
  18. Clayton Andrews. all 5'6" of him, continues to impress.
  19. Yeah his value as a trade piece is rather limited. You might find a taker, but they'd get very little in return, and Brewers would have to eat plenty of salary.
  20. Albers is 2 for 2 in save opportunities this week. He's going to blow up at some point, but maybe they can get another 6-8 weeks of useful late inning relief out of him.
  21. Freitas now 45 for 86 vs. LHP. That's hard to do hitting off a tee. Oh and he's slugging .880 vs. southpaws. .880!
  22. Small's velocity has been similar to what it was in college. I get the Brewers are easing him to pro ball after a rest following a college season where he logged 101 innings, but he should be challenged a bit more than rookie/low A ball considering his main attribute was that he was close to being a finished product while still in college.
  23. Well I've always like Hernan and I'm glad he's back but I wish they could get back to a 5 man bench that included Freitas to replace Aguilar's AB's. By the way anyone notice that Hernan walked 19 times in 121 PA in AAA?
  24. I think overtaking the Cubs isn't going to happen. For all the talent infused by additions Brewers made, Cubs have Contreras go down the day after Lucroy gets DFA'd and their adding Castellanos looks like a genius move. Oh and Ian Happ has suddenly come back smoking hot. Sometimes luck is on a team's side. Maybe Lester and Hamels will succumb to age and are out of gas, and they run out of bullpen arms, but not likely.
  25. Hire Jeff Gillooly to take out Yasmani's knee? Seriously, though, I'm as skeptical of offensive production as anyone with that league, but it's time to give this guy some starts to see if he can help at the ML level ... although the combo of Pina at C and Grandal at 1B against lefties hasn't been bad. Why not Freitas at 1B and Pina catching vs. LH pitching? Or Freitas catching and Grandal at 1B? Grandal simply is not the hitter from the right side he is from the left side and Pina is a good backup. The other issue is having a RH bat available to pinch hit late in games. Freitas has earned a call up. He's already on the 40 man. Freitas hasn't had a hot month at AAA. He's been raking all season. He's got 102 hits. I bet a good percentage of those are off of pitchers who've seen time in the majors this year. Why hasn't he? Update: Freitas now batting a cool .513 vs. LH (41 for 80). Lefties have only struck him out 9 times in those 80 ABs. His overall line: .513/.574/.838. That's simply ridiculous. I get it's off AAA pitching, but that would be good off any level of professional pitching.
