  1. What value would Nottingham have to the Brewers with virtually no action since July? If he's ready to play, let him play for CS through their playoffs, then recall him. Bethancourt's earned a roster spot with an outstanding season. Kratz will likely be taken off the roster after the season, so no reason not to add a guy like Bethancourt to compete for a job next year anyway. Obligatory Colorado Springs-related post: Do the other 9 journeyman-caliber players that are having as good or better of a season there also deserve a roster spot? Check the minor league careers of Bethancourt and Nottingham outside of CS and explain to me how Nottingham is a better prospect.

  3. Correct, and Knebel hasn't been down 10 days so he's not eligible to return just yet. Williams figures to be swapped out again. They'll have Lyles, Jennings, Barnes, Soria, Albers and Burnes all able to go one inning today if needed.
  4. He backed up his body to protect himself but he didn't bring the bat back to his body. He was still trying to get a bunt down. I've seen pitchers countless times get bunts down on similar pitches. They botched the call.
  5. If you can't afford $4 million to add a Daniel Murphy, and block him from a team that they were 2 games back of with 5 weeks left, you might as well fold up the franchise. Clearing a roster spot? Put Thames on the DL. Murphy can play LF. Who'd you like taking AB's in Sept, Thames or Daniel Murphy?
  6. As bad as Knebel and as inconsistent as Barnes has been all year, I'd still take them over Albers. What is he still doing on the roster?
  7. Guerra picked a bad time to slump, but now it's Davies turn. Encouraging to see put up back to back "Davies like" starts.
  8. It was pretty obvious that Cubs would have interest in Murphy. Their offense was in the dumps. They're undefeated since he arrived. Worst case was that the Brewers would get awarded him on their claim. Now that would be the logjam to end all logjams, but he has played 60 games in LF and who would you rather have out there, Murphy or Thames?
  9. Nobody mentions Aaron Brooks who arguably has been the best performer on the CS staff.
  10. I think all of you underestimate Davies. They can use him. As evidenced by his fine outing last night for Biloxi, it appears he's rounding into form. Maybe you wait until roster expansion and give him one more start at Biloxi, but this is a guy if he's healthy has won big games in tough environments. Who's the best pitcher on the Brewers right now? It's Chacin who's fastball averages about the same as Davies.
  11. Knebel wasn't perfect last year. He walked 4.7 every 9 innings. He blew 6 saves and was the loser in 4 games. He had command troubles periodically. Occasionally he has no feel for where his pitches are going. This year he's missing his spots more often with his fastball and guys can hit it if it's in their wheelhouse.
  12. I could see them going with 6 starters. They have basically one off day per week. That's one start per week for all but Chacin who likely would start every 5 days. Enough to keep them sharp, but also allow them to be strong.
  13. After watching Eric "passed ball" Kratz recently, I'd take Wieters in a heart beat.
  14. Zimmermann looked really good beating the Cubs last night. The more salary they'd be willing to absorb, the less the Brewers would have to surrender in talent. If the Tigers absorbed $25-30 million of his remaining $50 million, I'd be on board.
  15. That would have been a better investment than paying a 35 year old Albers, who had a 6+ ERA in 2016, $5 million over 2 years.
  16. The issue with Counsell is his stubborn adherence to his "rules". Whether that's shifts that don't take game situations into account inviting opponents to get tying runs to the plate by bunting, or not pulling out all the stops to beat the teams you are competing with directly for a playoff berth. All the furor about not using Hader or Jeffress when they came within a run was amplified because the opponent was the Cardinals who are competing with the Brewers for not just the wild card but the division. It's the manager,'s job to give his team the best chance to win the meaningful games. Rest players in games of lesser consequence not against the Cards or Cubs.
  17. I frankly would trust Shields whose been there more than anyone other than Chacn down the stretch. Look at what Hamels is doing for Cubs.
  18. Davis is on pace for 45-50 HR and 130 RBI. I get he can only play one position but that's the case for Aguilar too and where would the Brewers be without him? I could live with the lack of versatility and having a runner take an occasional base on my LF with that kind of production. Santana's in the minor leagues as are Nottingham and Derby.
  19. Of the starters who may have cleared waivers, the two names that stick out are Marco Estrada and James Shields, both of whom have some value should the Brewers decide they want to add an arm. Shields in particular interests me. Since May 17th, he's gone 7 or more innings in 10 of his starts.
  20. Yah I was never particularly thrilled with that trade, even from the start. 3.5 or 4.5 years of Will Smith (whatever it was) and we got a once good catching prospect and a nice pitching prospect...but one seemed destined for a high leverage bullpen role. Seemed like a light return and now looks terrible because we started competing so fast and our return is absolute junk now. The return looked pretty decent at the time for us since all we had to go on were prospect rankings. Obviously the Giants saw Stearns coming from a mile away and dumped the hot mess that is Bickford on him. Stearns had very little respect for the talent he inherited. Davis, Gennett and Smith brought back next to nothing. One's an AL MVP candidate with the most HR in baseball since he was traded. Another was an All Star this season, and Smith is one of the best LH relievers in the game. Not only that, he chose to sign Matt Albers instead of bringing back Jared Hughes who's got an ERA of 1.30 in 55 games for the Reds.
  21. Brewers shifting turning outs into hits. Has to drive pitchers nuts.
  22. While Lyles' peripherals this year have been ok, when your best relievers haven't pitched in a week, and it's a critical game, once they got within one run, you have to use either Hader or Jeffress to give yourself a shot in the 9th. Counsell's excuse that they need those guys fresh to hold leads makes zero sense with all the off days, and the fact they've had a difficult time getting leads. They had a chance to steal a game, when doing so might have turned their outlook around completely. Counsell's lost me. The job is too big for him.
  23. It's why most of us are thankful there's Badgers and Packers to look forward to this time of year. Want to know when all this started? Go back to the days when Del Crandall managed the Brewers (73-75) and check the game logs on B-R. After the fourth of July, it always fell apart.
  24. Bethancourt is a former consensus top 100 prospect in the Braves system. He posted an .880 OPS as a 19 year old in the Arizona Fall League in 2011. That opened eyes. He debuted in the majors with 1 plate appearance in 2013, and split time between AAA and the majors in both 2014 and 2015. Though he hit very well at AAA in 2015, he didn't do much in the majors and was dealt to San Diego. He spent all of 2016 in a backup role for the Padres where he hit like a typical backup catcher: .228/.265/.368 .633 with 6 HR. He's a 0.7 plus WAR defensively for his brief major league career, throwing out 35% of base stealers. He's at 41% for CS this year. I saw him in person in Arizona this spring and I was impressed. Physically, he looks the part. He's got power as evidenced by 19 HR this year. I don't think he'll ever hit for big average, but Bethancourt is certainly capable of being an adequate major league backup if not a marginal starter. He's got a better pedigree than Pina had when he became the starter and I'd argue it's better than Nottingham or Bandy too. It's not like he's old, he turns 27 in September.
