  1. Some of the rentals out there could very well still be available after the deadline. That being said, these next couple weeks are huge.
  2. It was us baby boomers that bore the brunt of the Braves leaving. Our parents generation in Wisconsin had loyalties to teams prior to the Braves arrival, so they reverted. Even my brother, who's 12 years older than me was a White Sox fan before and after the Braves left had an easier time adjusting. I've never truly gotten over it and my loathing of Bill Bartholomay who amazingly is still alive has never waned.
  3. Wellington Castillo was suspended in June I believe. Don't think he's eligible to return until September.
  4. He's only allowed more than 2 ER once in his last 7 starts. That was a tough outing vs. the Pirates at home but that can happen at GAB.
  5. I still think they'll get a starter. Maybe they can move Santana to the Yankees to fill in for Judge but the return would be minimal.
  6. As a 12-13 year old boy in 1965 the devastating news that the Braves were leaving for Atlanta following the 1965 season left me with only the faint hope that somehow a Braves pennant in their last season in Milwaukee would cast the nation's attention on the plight of the city and it's loyal fans. Nobody did more to bring one last hurrah for Braves fans in Milwaukee than Tony Cloninger who was 24-11 that season with an ERA of 3.29. The team was an astounding 26-12 in his starts. There was a stretch that season when Cloninger, Wade Blasingame (16 wins) and Ken Johnson (13 wins), were almost automatic and they were right there in late August. I'm firmly convinced however that the Braves front office, which that year operated in Atlanta, did everything they could to undermine that team's chances down the stretch that year. They simply refused to make a move for that one additional pitcher that that team so desperately needed. RIP Tony. I'll always remember you as a great Milwaukee Brave.
  7. I'm not crazy about Gonzales' recent form. He was awful in June, and only marginally better in July. I'd love Wheeler but word is out that Mets are now asking the moon. Gausman? Eh. He doesn't move the needle for me and because he has control, O's will try and extract some significant return. He's not worth it. I'd go back to the Twins and make a big push for Gibson and if he's not available I'd grab Harvey. Third choice would be bringing back Mike Fiers, who might be had after the deadline.
  8. Harvey is probably the best rental still on the market. The guys with control come with a premium. Now that the pen has been bolstered, they need 5-6 quality innings. Harvey is capable of that. Let's them limit innings for Peralta too..
  9. Miller got a shot and needed to deliver. He didn't get it done.
  10. Who's spot does Hamels take without making the team worse? Guerra, Anderson, Chacin and Peralta are clearly having better success this year. Davies is probably better when he returns, and if not Woodruff is. Even Burnes to the rotation and a aaaa call up to be long man would be better. Adding just any veteran would have been a mistake. Hamels has worn down as the season progressed. He may get a jolt and be fine for a few starts, but the Cubs are fooling themselves into thinking they are getting a younger version of Hamels.
  11. I think the plan was for them to go to a 6 man rotation when Davies returned. Hard to see them doing the reverse. I still think they add a starter.
  12. Let's remember it's 2018, not 1988. A lot more outs do not involve defense at all. For the most part, this Brewer staff is a strikeout/flyout staff. Plus, I seriously doubt that if they have a lead after 6 innings, that both Shaw and Moustakas will be in the game. We could see instances where Aguilar gets rested, and Shaw goes to 1B too, with Thames in the OF. Shaw will probably be no worse than Jeff Kent, who was a corner infielder who played 2B most of his career.
  13. I guess this is the end of the Brad Miller experiment? Have to wonder if Villar will still have a job.
  14. If he hits 25-30 HR between August and next July, they can get half of what it costs them back in a deal to make room for Hiura.
  15. In his last 5 starts, he's gone 22 innings, allowed 37 hits and 29 runs of which 25 were earned. Four of the teams he faced were among the worst offenses in baseball: Padres, White Sox, Tigers and O's. Peter Gammons was on The Score this morning and actually used the excuse it was the Texas heat that was getting to Hamels. Really? Can't see how he helps the Cubs, but I guess you never know. Up until those 5 starts, he wasn't bad though overall the Rangers were 7-13 in his 20 starts.
  16. Murphy would be a great get. I think the Nats will wait till the last minute, but if they do decide to sell, he's my number one target. He'd come with a bonus of being a guy who's performed very well in the postseason.
  17. I haven't heard his name come up connected to the Brewers, but he's been really pitching well and shouldn't cost much. He makes more sense than overpaying for Matt Harvey.
  18. Have you watched Miller and Villar lately? I get that if Arcia gets it going, we'll see more of Saladino at 2B, but Schoop's a cut above those guys, and one of the hottest hitters in the game the last month.
  19. I could see the Twins taking Santana and/or Villar in a deal for Dozier if they think they still have a shot. They won't part with Gibson though if that's the case.
  20. His last two AB's last night were encouraging. One was an absolute rocket right at the LF. The other was a one hop smash right to 2B. The exit velocities on both were up there and were the hardest hit balls I've seen from him in a long, long time.
  21. My guess is Williams and Barnes go back to CS to make room for Albers and Soria tomorrow and they go with 12 pitchers for the time being.
  22. No I would not give up Diplan's spot, it was merely showing that you can wait for a couple players to develop. (Although I personally would rather have Medeiros). Do we really need to have Orf, Dubon, Hiura, Arcia, Villar, Miller, Saladino, and Perez on the 40 man? Seems like a lot of players for a few positions especially with a lot of these players have positional versatility. Remove: Miley, Perez, Orf, Wilkerson, Ascher Add: Ortiz, Supak, Gatewood, Medeiros, Devin Williams, (Keston after Super 2 status) Are they willing to go to arbitration with both Santana and Villar? I doubt it. They couldn't move Santana when he was making near minimum. Villar already has negative value.

  24. The cost for relievers in FA is very high. It's only a one year commitment for 2019 for a quality back end arm. If Albers returns strong, Brewers have the ability to lock down opponents from the 7th inning on, and not just every other day when certain guys are rested.
