  1. Twice this week Counsell has used Williams in a spot that called for Albers in order to play the match up game with his new toy Logan. It's failed both times because Williams has walked the leadoff man both times and Logan gave up big hits. One, Williams is not ready for high leverage situations particularly in hostile environments and two, Logan after nearly 2 months out should have been eased in with less stressful situations. Of course part of that is the starter not going deep enough, but it's not like he couldn't have tried to get a few more outs of Guerra.
  2. I look at it this way. Suter's made 8 starts and has gone at least 5 innings in all of them. Woodruff's made 3 starts and only made it to 5 innings once and that was against a struggling Diamondback team. Suter has the 5th spot until Miley reclaims it. Peralta going down will open up the spot for Anderson. Suter will start Wednesday on regular rest. The only question is do you keep Lopez around and allow Woodruff to stay stretched out by starting in AAA or do you move Woodruff to the pen. I think Woodruff goes back to CS.
  3. Let's see how Peralta does in start 2 and how Suter does tonight and then line them up. Woodruff had a nice bounce back outing but right now the D-Backs are putting a very weak lineup on the field. No offense as he had the winning hit the other night, but if Descalso is your #3 hitter, you have problems. This is true. I just don't trust Suter with his junk balling... it doesn't translate to less than 3-5 runs in 3-5 innings and that some nights is plenty to doom us. At least Woody and Peralta have that big game potential. They don't need big game potential in May. They need a guy who can be counted on to keep the game within reach every time out. Could Peralta keep a spot with another very good start? Sure. But I'm betting Suter stays and Woodruff goes to make room for Anderson on Monday.
  4. You might want to read Jeff Sullivan's chat on Fangraphs from yesterday. Quoting Sullivan "I think there are teams in the major leagues with worse starting first basemen than Ji Man Choi....all he's ever done is abuse Triple A, with a whole lot of walks. He's legit" He went on to say that it speaks to the organizational depth that the Brewers can DL Braun and replace him with Choi. By the way, happy 27th birthday Ji-Man!
  5. For all you doubters out there, take the word of Keith Hernandez. Back in April when the Brewers were playing the Mets, Hernadez had high praise for Aguilar. Hernandez noted that Aguilar is not just a big strong guy who goes up there hacking and swinging and missing. He has a clue at the plate and thus in his opinion he's a very dangerous hitter.
  6. Didn't mean to slight Prince. But he took vicious swings, whereas Shaw has a very balanced short swing that when times it up is a thing of beauty.
  7. My dream is Brewers acquire Hamels and Machado in July. Now that would send chills to the north side of Chicago and the rest of the NL. Hamels could be this year's version of Verlander.
  8. DeJong joins Molina and Carlos Martinez on the Cardinal DL with a broken hand. He's out indefinitely. Dexter Fowler is still hitting .150. Could he be done at 32?
  9. When both Shaw and Yelich are swinging the bat like they are now it's a thing of beauty and no RH pitcher can relax facing this lineup. Shaw might have the best HR stroke of any LH hitter to ever wear a Brewer uniform, better than Jenkins, even better than Oglivie. When you watch a game and the CF camera catches Shaw connecting, you know immediately it's gone. The Yelich and Shaw combo reminds me of the Cooper/Oglivie tandem. Add Thames back to the mix, and wow.
  11. Choi's the logical choice. If not now, why have him on the 40 man? His OBP is .430, with just one more K than BB. I figure he'll be slotted just behind Santana in the batting order.
  12. They need a bat to DH this weekend. I'd go with Choi.
  13. Have to say visually the best teams the Brewers have faced are all in their own division. Arizona without Lamb and now Pollock frankly isn't very good. Colorado looks like they should win that division but they're no juggernaut.
  14. Kudos for remembering Mike Thomas, and Carl Dale I had no recollection of them. did remember Burrows as a lefty reliever however. On the other hand, Wayne Twitchell had a pretty extensive career primarily as a starter for the Phillies teams of the 70's. Joe Azcue was an All Star with the Indians in 1968 and had spent some time with the Milwaukee Braves organization. He was done when he got to the Brewers though he was only 32. Ron Clark was a utility guy with several organization. "If I had to bet, I doubt there's any pics of these guys in Brewer uniforms.
  15. Worst managed game in a long time. Bandy leading off to PH? Williams to pitch the 8th of a 1-1 tie when Albers, Jennings, Jeffress and Knebel were all available? The leadoff walk was the ballgame and not surprising since he had 9 walks in 14 innings going in.
  16. And the catcher has started to hit too. Not coincidentally, Bandy is in witness protection.
  17. Both positions have started stabilizing with Villar and Perez recently swinging the bat better and Saladino replacing Sogard. Pina's on a bit of a tear too while Bandy has been MIA. They still need to replace Bandy with Bethancourt in the backup catcher role and let Nottingham continue to progress at AAA. If there are trades that make sense as the deadline approaches, then I'm sure they'll be considered.
  18. Regarding Sogard, it would be a terrible idea to cut him loose. I get he's not playing well, but it's also been 4 games in AAA. With Dubon down for the season, our SS depth is taxed a bit. There are other options we can cut loose if needed, Sogard isn't going anywhere anytime soon. As far as SP stability, we've had anything but stability in the rotation. Fortunately we have a lot of depth we can call on to cover starts. Hopefully Peralta hangs around for a few starts until some other guys get healthy. And if he pitches like he has this first start, it's going to be hard to send him down when Chase/Davies/Nelson get healthy. I would like to think this one good start has earned him another start over either Suter or Woodruff if it comes down to those choices. Losing Sogard if they need a 40 man spot is hardly a disaster. Saladino is a fine defensive shortstop who wasn't bad with the bat in Chicago in 2016. Orf's started 9 games there this year without an error. Perez can play there too.
  19. Hamels would be my target as well particularly if Nelson doesn't appear to be a factor. His $24 million vesting option isn't going to kick in but his $20 million team option for 2019 is certainly doable if he has a strong year. I wouldn't be interested in Archer.
  20. With you on Henry. If he does, he's going to move well up the prospect list the next time it comes out.
  21. 150 foot throws off flat ground are about building arm strength. It's not like he can't get up on a mound and throw, but the point is to have him ready to go when he does. When he starts throwing off a mound, it's like the first day of spring training. Figure 6 weeks from then to be ready to face major league hitters.
  22. No. He's a younger and right handed hitting Sogard. He's fine in a utility role as a replacement for Sogard. But no you don't want him starting more than once a week max. I have no problem with Saladino, Perez, or anyone else in the line-up every day at 2B as long as they're hitting. None of these guys can hit at a respectable level for an entire season, so may as well ride the hot bat. Maybe Saladino can hit at a decent enough level to play every day for 4-6 weeks or whatever, that's fine. I dunno. Perez has posted OPS above .700 in each of 2016 and 2017 in over 400 PA each season and Saladino had a .725 OPS over 319 PA in 2016. I'd say that's a respectable level over an entire season.
  23. 24-10 against teams other than the Cubs! 120 games remaining, 11 vs. the Cubs and 109 vs. teams other than the Cubs.
  24. Toss up between Nelson and Wilkerson. I think Burnes follows those two.
