  1. I like it too. I-Rod brought back a pretty nice return for the Astros and it seems clear that Craig is more valuable at this point. I think Doug could get an OK prospect in return for Craig (if he clears waivers). I hope Doug is exploring these avenues.
  2. Igawa supposedly has an extensive collection of R/C toys. I don't know if that helps or hurts his trade value. If the Brewers trade for him, maybe he'll let Doug play with a few, but on the other hand, if Igawa did let Doug play with his toys, maybe other guys would be jealous and it would spread discord throughout the organization.
  3. Pudge is the all-time games caught leader, it's not surprising that he is slowing down. He's still better than Kendall though. Also, I agree with everybody else about trying to sell off as many vets as possible right now. I hope Doug moves at least a couple guys.
  4. I'm not sure which team has been the most disappointing but I was really disappointed with the play of JJ, Carlos, and Bill. Too bad they are all having bad seasons, or maybe the Brewers wouldn't be in consideration for most disappointing team.
  5. I meant that he was older when he made A ball. I should have been clearer, sorry.
  6. I doubt he would repeat low A, he's a teenaged middle infielder with an OPS that is 100 points better than the league average. That kind of guy tends to get pushed aggressively. (For example, Escobar had an OPS more than 60 points below league average when he was in low A and he didn't repeat the level. It's true that he was a different kind of prospect than Lawrie, but I think his treatment is instructive. Looking back, the Brewers haven't had a lot of similar prospects to Lawrie recently. Their 2 good shortstop prospects (JJ, Alcides) were more defensive players and their 2 good 2nd base prospects (Rickie, Hernan) were in their 20's.) Decker looks damn good too.
  7. Here's a great stats site.
  8. My brother raves about "Sunshine", from 2007. I haven't gotten around to seeing it but he loves it.
  9. That was my impression, but I can't say for certain. I wrote down what he said when he was in the booth tonight, tell me what you guys think: Brian and Bill seemed to try to want to shut down that line of conversation pretty quick and didn't follow up on Yount's thought. I agree with Robin that the Brewers didn't seem to want to compete throughout the 90's but I was somewhat surprised to hear the franchise icon say that so plainly.
  10. Robin Yount just totally called out Bud Selig for not trying to win. Hilarious.
  11. How does it make sense to say that Kendall is not hurting the team with his awful play? Sure, the team's disappointing play can't all be laid at the feet of one guy, but Kendall is an enormous part of the problem. The pitching is bad, but having a better offense would also be helpful. A terrible player is a terrible player, no matter what position he is playing. Also, "it can't be worse" does carry weight to me. There is almost no downside to making a move with Kendall (as has been shown when the team dumped comparably terrible players like Bennett and Moeller) and there may be significant upside. If Jason Kendall is not replaceable, then no veteran ever deserves to be replaced.
  12. They are also better players. Kendall is playing because he's a veteran. That's the only reason and it's a piss-poor one. Jason Kendall is the worst starting player in baseball. The Cubs realized that and replaced him with a young guy, as did the A's. Let's hope the Brewers aren't too foolish to do the same, although all signs so far point to that not being the case. This GM has a track record of falling in love with total garbage catchers- Gary Bennett, Chad Moeller. Jason Kendall is another in that line and those guys were also praised to the high heavens by the announcers and coaching staff. It was claimed that they were defensive studs and worked so well with pitchers and were so integral to the team's success. However, none of those things were true and they were easily replaced by guys who were, at worst, as bad as them. Kendall is as bad as it gets in MLB. There is no one that is worse. Replacing him with anybody at all is a lateral move at worst.
  13. Melvin has already put himself in a position to lose his job, playing Kendall every day is just going to make it more obvious that he should. He demoted a far better player than Kendall and ate $10.5 million to get rid of another guy whose crime was merely hitting as poorly as Kendall the golden boy. I've always believed that catchers are subject to a very harsh weeding out process. In other words, guys who can't catch don't catch, thus the spread in defensive abilities from the best catcher to the worst is not nearly as large as one would believe.
  14. Only a few times, but I've seen Kendall play more than enough. Every young catcher will have some trouble at first, why not get whatever problems there will be out of the way this year, when it doesn't matter anymore and the alternative is Jason Kendall? And if Salome is that atrocious, I'm open for Lucroy getting a chance. I think that Rivera, Salome, and Lucroy should all get 2 starts a week in September. At the least the guys will be able to get a little experience. What is the reason to stick with Kendall until the bitter end? How does it help now or in the future?
  15. Where is the evidence that Kendall is good at defense? Before becoming a Brewer, he was never one of the guys who was lauded as some standout defender. That's just been the company line that the announcers and coaches have been spouting the last couple years.
  16. There also isn't a clearly worse option. I don't think Rivera or Salome is likely to be worse than the worst player in the majors (qualified), but maybe I'm wrong. The downside risk is so slight as to be nonexistent. It can not be overstated how bad Kendall is. The difference between having Kendall catch and setting a garbage can on its side and letting it catch (and bat) would probably be half a win at this point.
  17. I disagree, but even if you think that Salome isn't ready, Rivera's lack of playing time makes no sense. Kendall is actively hurting the team.
  18. I don't think people are understanding just how bad Kendall is. He needs to go. He's hitting far, far worse than Hardy was. He's hitting as bad as Bill was. Salome is hitting approximately the same as Escobar is in AAA. If Escobar's bat is ready, then so is Salome's. Let him work on his defense in the majors, it's not like Kendall's been good in that department either.
  19. Salome's AAA OPS is only marginally worse than Escobar's, but who cares? Kendall is hitting far worse than Hardy was. Also, Hardy may be around next year, Kendall won't (or better not be). Playing JJ could conceivably have accomplished something, playing Kendall accomplishes nothing. Let Rivera, Salome, and Lucroy get the PT down the stretch and let Kendall collect his check while he sits at home. There is absolutely no reason to have Kendall play another inning for the Brewers. I'd rather see Carlos Corporan and his .501 AAA OPS get the playing time, at least he might have a future. Kendall has no future and is unbelievably awful right now. No harm would come from getting rid of him.
  20. Why can't Kendall be the one who was DFA's today? What have we, as fans, done to deserve this?
  21. Because both are premium defensive players and JJ has hit in the past and likely will again at some point.
  22. This is an interesting point and one I didn't think of. However, I still don't know that it helps JJ's trade value to get demoted. Maybe it does. Either way, he should be gone after this season.
  23. I don't think that moving the team's 3rd best player in order to make room for a below replacement level scrub is worthwhile.
  24. No, but it at least meant that on th off chance he got hot, those numbers would help his MLB stats. This does nothing but hurt JJ's trade value, imo. It's one thing to trade for a former All-Star SS who is coming off a down year, it's another to trade for a guy who is so awful that he got demoted.
