  1. So, this seems like a good place to ask, what are people hearing about Angel Salome's defense? Is he improving at all? I recently heard that 29 of 32 base stealers were successful on him this year, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. I really hope he can stick at C.
  2. Indeed. To hear some announcers talk, they act like Jones is (or at least was) a top player. He only had one good year for a corner OF, and that was in 2002. I have no idea why the Cubs brought him in in the first place, though he was somewhat servicable last season. If a team can get him for free (or close to it), he's probably worth a shot in a CF platoon, like Al suggested. However, who knows if he is still acceptable defensively out there. This is the first year since 2000 that he has been playing regularly in CF.
  3. Now we won't have to hear Bill Schroeder wax rhapsodic about Jacque Jones myriad exceptional skills so frequently.
  4. I've always liked Marte because he doesn't have to be used strictly as a LOOGY. He's also quite servicable against righties. I would be very happy if the Brewers got him (assuming they don't give away too much). That said, I'm starting to wonder if a trade for bullpen help makes sense. Parra and Thatcher look ready to help the pen right now and Balfour has also had some success. Maybe it would be better to trade Shouse, Capellan, and Spurling (who all have good enough ERAs that another team might be interested) and call those 3 guys up.
  5. Corey Hart is better than Buehrle right now, and will continue to be in the future. Also, he is much, much cheaper and under a team's control for several years. Buehrle is very good and perhaps he could fetch a guy like Hart. However, it will be a guy like Hart in AA or maybe AAA, not one who has been dominating the NL for the past month. If a team wanted Corey, the time to get him was before he established himself. Now there is very, very little chance the Brewers deal him.
  6. Reyes, Ramirez and Renteria are all better than JJ, I'll grant. However, and this is coming from someone who is not a huge JJ fan, how is Rollins better? JJ is hitting much better than Rollins is and their career rate stats are basically identical so there is not even the Prince vs. Pujols argument to be made. Plus, UZR has Rollins rated at -13 runs below average so far defensively this season, while JJ is at +1. That's a huge margin. I'm very comfortable saying that JJ is, at worst, the 4th best NL shortstop this season and Rollins has not been in his class.
  7. nice. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tired.gif
  8. In my opinion, this isn't the thread to get into yet another debate about what steroids do or do not do to someone. Using any drug at all (even aspirin or ben-gay (as we saw a couple weeks ago)) can have serious side effects in certain people. Plus, how is it "roid rage" when he killed his wife a day before he killed his son, then killed himself a day after that? That's hardly a quick burst of rage. Something much less easy to explain was going on there, and I think it trivializes the situation if people are trying to use what happened to ride their various hobby horses. I'm just saying it's too soon and too easy to say "steroids made him do it". I guess that's how the media works nowadays though.
  9. sorry I forgot to reply rydogg, I didn't mean to leave you hanging. I asked my sister-in-law about it and she said that she's decided look more at condos rather than apartments. Sorry, I hope you find (or have already found) someone.
  10. That's a shame. Oh well, I'm sure they'll ship him out after that 2nd year.
  11. I don't follow wrestling at all but it seems kind of ironic that that abcnews link shows a picture of Benoit wrestling another dead guy. This is a shame all around. No excuse for killing your family, but it's too bad someone didn't notice that this guy was in such bad shape before this happened.
  12. Wasdin was 30, Halama was 29. Both were already ML vets, I think this is more impressive.
  13. wow, impressive performance for Manny. Let's hope he gets the call at some point.
  14. Is this Parra's 1st start in AAA? I can't remember when he got called up to AAA, was that last week or the week before?
  15. If that's the case, I wish they would keep quiet about it. It's not unheard of for commissioners to invalidate certain all-star vote totals (I remember David Stern invalidated Artest's win a few years ago). Hopefully they put the story out after the team is announced.
  16. Hi everybody- I would really, really like a Bill Hall w/ pink bat for my wife. If anybody has one for sale or trade, please let me know what you would be looking for.
  17. I like prospects a lot, so I may be more hesitant to trade them than most. However, I can't believe that Melvin actually regards prospects as a liability in a baseball sense. It makes no sense, because prospects are the most necessary building block of a small-market team. Even a back-up level player who can supply a team with 4-5 years of cheap service is saving a team millions of dollars over a comparable veteran player. Meanwhile, guys like Prince are saving the team tens of millions of dollars over a comparable vet. Anyway, I wouldn't trade Villanueva, Gallardo, Braun, Salome, Inman, Brantley, Jeffress, or Brewer. I think all of those guys are worth too much if they pan out, and because the Brewers already payed signing bonuses to them, they aren't really costing the team anything right now (they would use the roster spot on someone else anyway). I would trade Jackson, Gwynn, Gillespie, Gamel, Moss, Sarfate without hesitation. I think people may still have interest in some of those guys, but even if they pan out, the Brewers will probably have better options (unlike the guys on my no trade list). The rest of the guys I would play by ear. It would depend on the offer.
  18. I asked him whose swing he thought was better, Mills or LaPorta (who I (and most people) thought were the two best college hitters). He said that he liked LaPorta's swing better. I like Gomez, he's an interesting writer. He is somewhat guilty of judging on only a few at-bats, but he readily admits that that is a problem (he can only analyze the video that exists, after all).
  19. I thought this thread was going to about former MLB player Mel Hall. All I have to say about this relationship is that, when my sister ran track in high school, if she had come home talking about how she was going to marry her coach who was 25 years older than her, my brother, my dad, and I all would have been going to jail after we got through with him. Taking advantage of young girls in that position is just sick, imo.
  20. I happened to come across this analysis today. It was written by Carlos Gomez (a blogger and former professional player) who is making a name for himself as a mechanics analyst (he does pitchers and hitters). He posted it about a month after last year's draft. Now normally I wouldn't worry much about that, even though I really respect his opinion. He only saw the MLB scouting video, after all. However, now we have some first-hand reports that he is only throwing in the 80s, just as Gomez predicted. If he can really only throw in the high-80s, it's not like his career is over, but it is somewhat worrisome. Villanueva, Gallardo, and Inman don't blow people away with heat either, but they all were more "polished" at similar stages in their development. I really just wish he actually did throw it in the high 90s. It would be nice if even one of those type of guys they thought they were drafting worked out (Gold, Neugy, Jones, Rogers, now Jeffress). link: www.baseballthinkfactory....rst_round/
  21. Pass. Here are his stolen base percentages since his last year in Milwaukee: 84% 71% 67% 60% Do we really want him getting thrown out on the bases to end a game in the playoffs? Also, he has no defensive value, so he doesn't help there either. I'd much rather just stick with Mench.
  22. Jeffress needs to stay in the rotation for awhile. at least until he proves he can't. I'll be disappointed if he's a reliever any time in the next 2-3 years. Then again, I think the same thing goes for all of the team's top pitching prospects, with the exception of ones who may have serious injury concerns (like Rogers, who apparently has a terrible (I mean mechanically) delivery).
  23. I hear that Griffey's defense is just atrocious at this point, which offsets a lot (or maybe all) of his offensive upgrade over Jenkins. I don't like him on the Brewers at this point. He should be back in the AL. If the Brewers decide to move Jenkins for another outfielder, it should be for an OBP monster. Otherwise, I think any upgrade would be slim or non-existent. That said, if Griffey stays in the NL, Chicago would be a pretty good fit for him. He adds left-handed thump to the Cubs 3 right-handed sluggers and Wrigley is a small yard, so his defense would be less egregious.
  24. But Shealy is terrible and will soon be DFA'd (51 OPS+ for a first baseman!). Plus, he's in a keeper league, so Butler would need to keep some defensive value for a few seasons at least. I've heard that Butler is an all-time butcher at any position. He's already made one error in 5 chances this season. Plus, he's only caught 4 balls in 43 innings in left this year. Small sample, I know, but that matches up with what many expected from him in the field. I think he'll be their full-time DH starting next year, and will pretty much never see the field again (kind of like Edgar Martinez's last 10 years). I like Butler as a hitter, but prospect-watchers do not like him at all defensively. People thought Prince and Rickie and Braun needed work, but Butler is on a whole 'nother level.
