  1. Am I the only one who dislikes bringing the infield in early in a game? Just try to get outs...especially in a game which is starting to resemble a dumpster fire in the 2nd inning.
  2. This isn't exactly the first time a GM has appointed himself to fill a managerial vacancy...it's just that the new manager has a lot less prior relevant experience than the other example.
  3. 3-year deal is a bit of a surprise to me; I assumed he'd get the "Interim" tag, and have the option of moving back into the front office at year's end.
  4. At least they're hitting today! Davis hitting his 1st homer should help, as he's been pressing for the past few weeks to get one.
  5. The Brewers have had a minor league academy in Latin America....is it still open? (Needless to say, it was never a huge success.)
  6. I've been reduced to watching this game via the app; it hurts slightly less to see the ball grooved down the middle of the plate when you're only watching by proxy.
  7. What?? Nobody has said anything about his hitting. The discussion has been about poor base running, not throwing it to the right base, etc. ie mental errors. I don't know that you get the production the Brewers have seen out of Gomez if the manager is constantly hen-pecking the baseball IQ issues you're talking about. When you put a constant stream of thoughts into a guy's head, he starts thinking and not acting on instinct. The offensive upswing that I brought up was a conscious effort by Gomez and Roenicke to stop trying to make Carlos into the high-OBP, traditional leadoff hitter the Mets and Twins wanted him to be & instead show off his natural talent. I suspect that Roenicke would rather accept that Gomez is going to do something that makes a manager shake his head every once in awhile, believing the trade-off is that he's also going to make the occasional eye-popping highlight play as a result.
  8. Counterpoint: Gomez's major league OPS by season 2007 - .592 (139 PA) 2008 - .656 (614 PA) 2009 - .624 (349 PA) 2010 - .655 (318 PA) ------------------------ 2011 - .679 (258 PA) 2012 - .768 (452 PA) 2013 - .844 (590 PA) 2014 - .833 (644 PA) 2011 was RR's first year as manager of the Brewers; Gomez's worst production under RR is better than his best seasons with the Mets and Twins. While some portion of that can be attributed to age, it was the change in philosophy under Roenicke which has allowed him to flourish in a way that he didn't under the preceding 3-4 managers (I'm not going to look for a breakdown between Yost or Sveum managing in 2010).
  9. I prefer this thread to certain other threads on the forum right now (which shall go nameless, in order to preserve optimism). SPRING HOPES ATTORNEY.
  10. Good for Sam; he had a bad game in the championship, but the run in the tournament made him a few million dollars. Awfully hard to tell a guy like that to stick around. It's going to be a reloading year for Wisconsin without him, but that's how Bo's program has always worked.
  11. What part of our history with Mark A. tells you that "punting on the season" was ever going to be an option?
  12. I'm going to give it at least a week - probably longer - before hitting the panic button.
  13. I do wonder if Gasser's getting poked in the eye, and Dekker taking a shot to the head negatively affected their performances tonight. Beyond that, it's hard to feel the game is being played on a level playing field when the team that only fouls twice in the first 20 minutes of the game racks up 10 fouls in the next ~ 10 minutes of play. Even if you're of the mindset that they got away with something....the lack of consistency in the calls is a problem. I can't put it all on the refs, though. This Badgers team was in a position to win, and because of the quality defense (and the fatigue from all the high-stress minutes the starters have racked up all season), they just couldn't get their offensive sets going when it mattered most. When the other team is bringing "unheralded" All-American's in off the bench....it's hard to keep up. Nothing to hang your head about. (At least they beat Kentucky....which will be the one thing people remember about this Tournament going forward.)
  14. Things could always be worse; you could be a Cubs fan: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/cubs-fans-relieve-themselves-in-cups-amid-bathroom-disaster/ar-AAauq9Q It's one thing when your baseball team is an excuse to go to the ballpark and drink, but opening day seems to be everybody's excuse to do just that. I went to opening day once when I was in college, and pretty much decided there are 80 (-plus) other games on the schedule I can go to.
  15. ...someone's gotta say it... Back-to-Back Final Fours! Dekker's not coming back for his senior year, so they better win it all this time around. (Kind of an afterthought, but according to ESPN, UWGB just lost Brian Wardle to Bradley University.)
  16. Go early. I was in Phoenix the week of the 9th, and the temps didn't hit 90 that week....although 88 with no shade in Peoria on the Friday was not comfortable.
  17. This is why I'd love to see Rogers make the team and start ~3 times / week at the corner positions (vs. left-hand starters @ 1b, and making sure A-Ram doesn't have to play day games after a night game). I'd rather see him as a super-sub this year than playing every day in AAA, just to get more of a template for how he does against major-league pitching than his 10 plate appearances last year. This approach helps keep Ramirez from getting run-down over the course of the season, which is an added benefit. If they don't give someone the opportunity to become the heir apparent for 3b in 2016, it's going to mean an expensive free agent signing or losing something of value in a trade. Rogers is already 27, so it's not like service time is going to be a major issue going forward; he's under team control through his peak seasons.
  18. Also sitting at 10/16, with all of my Final 4 still alive (UW, UK, MSU, Duke). Still sitting fairly well in the Brewerfan.net pool, if Kentucky runs the table. (Wanted to pick Wisconsin, but the UNC/Arizona/UK gauntlet makes it tough for me to believe they will be able to run the table. Surprised by how few people went with the preemptive favorite this time around.)
  19. Having spent last week in Arizona, I have to agree with Patrick and Dean Machine. Maryvale is not exactly prime real estate, but the games start at 1 in the afternoon. Never felt unsafe while I was there; you park in the Brewers lot, and you drive away during daylight. I don't go to the park for the facilities; I went for the games themselves. Maryvale had more shaded seating areas than Glendale (Dodgers / White Sox) or Peoria's (Mariners / Padres) facilities....which is kind of a big deal when the temps are in the upper 80s and you're coming from Wisconsin winter. (Even some of the lawn seats are in the shade in Maryvale.) Lest it go unsaid, Maryvale tickets are a bargain. The most expensive seats in the park in Maryvale ($23 / ticket) are nearly the same price as lawn seating to see the Giants games in Scottsdale ($20 -vs- $8 for lawn seating in Maryvale). Unless the locker / training facilities are demonstrably poorer for the Maryvale facility than elsewhere....I tend to prefer the low prices.
  20. Starters (8) 1B Lind 2B Gennett SS Segura 3B Ramirez LF Davis CF Gomez RF Braun C Lucroy Bench (5) C Maldondo CIF Jason Rogers MIF H. Gomez OF4 Parra CIF/OF5 Jimenez SP (5) 1 K. Lohse 2 M. Garza 3 W. Peralta 4 M. Fiers 5 J. Nelson Relievers (7) LR T. Thornburg MR Cotts MR J. Jeffress MR B. Kintzler 8 L W. Smith 8 R J. Broxton CL F. Rodriguez DL (1) MR J. Henderson --- Jimenez has played LF once already this spring; I suspect he'll get a few more opportunities to see if he can fill the emergency role. With Lind needing a PH option against LOOGY's late, and Ramirez needing some off days, I opted to give Rogers the priority bench spot. Cotts having a ML contract gets him the last bullpen spot.
  21. Would Danny Trejo be given a Snickers bar? ...because if so, my money's on Vin Diesel.
  22. I've been wondering if Davis would be the one to try 1b. Because Lind is an obvious lift when facing a LOOGY in close & late situations...Khris Davis would have been the natural fit as a PH. If Parra can play 1b, it means he can stay in the game in that situation (with Davis staying in to play LF). It's not as great a situation when Parra is on the bench....it would make more sense to put Rogers in (assuming he is on the 25-man), but a little versatility is a good thing.
