  1. That's great...but who from the 2017 Brewers organization plays Harry Doyle? That guy had some charisma.
  2. ...what about the disappearance of the low strike? For years, the mantra for a pitcher in avoiding the HR ball has been to keep their pitches down in the zone. With those pitches now being increasingly called non-strikes, one would have to expect more of the pitches that miss the bottom of the called strike zone are going to be "mistake" pitches driven out of the park.
  3. We picked up a lefty reliever who will probably pitch for the Brewers at some point in the second half, and gave up a position player who - despite great numbers - was not likely to be called up in the 2nd half (even if Thames went down & Aguilar needed a day off, I suspect they'd play Sogard at 1b over calling someone up) ...and who would be taking up a spot on a very crowed 40-man roster (EDIT: next year)? Short of Cooper becoming the next Jeff Bagwell, hard not to like this trade.
  4. I had a Rob Deer autograph before 3TO was even a thing.
  5. Had to assume this was going to be the move to open a spot with Villar coming off the DL.
  6. Am I the only person who doesn't really care if Knebel gets a strikeout every outing? It's nice, but I wouldn't want him pitching to the record, rather than just focusing on getting hitters out and preserving leads in winnable games.
  7. This is the Optimism thread; not the Guarded Optimism thread. They're a playoff team until the season is over and the standings say otherwise!
  8. I think Knebel or Thames will be named to the team as a reserve, and I could certainly see Shaw winning a last man vote (a la Geoff Jenkins in '03 and Corey Hart in '08). Knebel or Thames probably comes down to the manager's preference for his bench. Thames has the higher profile, but he's also at the same position as Rizzo, Goldschmidt, Votto and Zimmerman.
  9. ...Arcia hit .307 (.347 OBP, .453 Slg.) in a full season of AA in 2015, as a 20-21 year old. Orlando is currently 22 years old; in fact, he's a half-month younger than Dubon. One of my go-to comps for players who struggled mightily when rushed into MLB playing time is J.J. Hardy, who hit .247 /.327 /.384 (.711 OPS) in his first year in the majors (2005) as a 22-23 year old. Arcia is currently hitting .246 / .289 / .361 at the same age as Hardy's rookie year. He's less ready with the bat, but he's also a better defensive player than J.J. was. To my mind, if you're going to bring a player up as early as Milwaukee has with Arcia, you have to stick with him and give him the room to improve. That's not to say you can't send him down...but he'd have to look completely lost at the plate before I'd really think about doing so.
  10. Schum was released today; he apparently missed most of OTAs with a back injury. I have to assume the Packers will bring in another punter, if only as a "camp leg."
  11. Honestly, I think it's intended to be more of a through-line from "Fear the Deer" to "Revere the Beard," as opposed to "...Beer-d." In either event, probably not the best marketing idea ever.
  12. I got this one! From the Miller Park A-to-Z Guide: Cameras & Video Equipment Guests are permitted to bring cameras and video equipment into Miller Park, provided that they are intended for personal use only. Videotaping of any field activity, Brewers staff, or its agents is strictly prohibited. Guests are not permitted to stand in the aisles, wells or walkways, or obstruct others from viewing the game while taking photographs. Monopods and tripods are not permitted. Persons deemed to be violating these rules may be ejected, and the footage may be confiscated. Carry-in Policy Guests may not bring any cans, glass containers or alcohol into Miller Park. Soda, water or juice must be contained in factory-sealed plastic bottles. Guests may bring food items into Miller Park using appropriate containers. All bags, purses, fanny packs or soft-sided coolers must be 16" x 16" x 8" or smaller and are subject to inspection. Hard-sided coolers are not allowed in the ballpark. Only food purchased within Miller Park will be allowed into Suite areas. -- I've never tried to take a camera bag into the park, since it's not the greatest environment to switch lenses. I regularly take a DSLR into the park, with a hefty 200mm lens on the thing, and security never gives me a hard time about it. (Gratuitous link to my Flickr album from last Sunday's game...taken from Section 216, a few sections over from where your seats are!)
  13. Sadly, Marinez is coming off what was probably his best outing of the year, as his 2.2 IP with only 1 ER gave the Brewers a chance to get back into the game on Mother's Day.
  14. Went to my first game of the year on Sunday, got there early, and didn't have any trouble with lines for the concessions before the game. Sat down with the family at one of the tables in RF on the loge level, wanted to try the sliced brisket...only to find that the RF Loge location for Smoke shack was closed for the day; the signage posting the closure recommended going to the alternate location on the left field side....which turned out to be on the opposite end of the ballpark. The sandwich turned out to be surprisingly dry; while I did add some sauce from a bottle at the stand, per the vendor's recommendation....I wasn't about to walk back to the stand to put more sauce on after tasting. Still fared better than my brother and mother, whose brats were not warmed. Needless to say, I'm probably back to carry-ins going forward. They didn't improve food quality, so much as they just raised the prices.
  15. High- or low- leverage situations don't seem to be the problem. He has pitched reasonably well in save situations, but has been cuffed around in non-save situations. Stop pitching him in tie games, and stop pitching him when up more than 3 runs. (Extra innings or bullpen fatigue may affect the viability of this pattern, I realize.)
  16. My recollection of Garza's free agency is that his marketability was severely hindered by draft pick compensation, which is why he signed with Milwaukee very close to the start of the season. Hopefully, someone else can confirm.
  17. I remembered being at that game because of Byung-Hyun Kim, who's submarine-esque delivery made him my brother's favorite pitcher at the time. I think it might have been the only time I saw him pitch in-person.
  18. It's not quite like the time the Brewers hired Rachel (? - I think that was her name) to be part of their grounds-keeping staff years ago, since that news made the transaction wire, but good news nonetheless.
  19. I will absolutely and without question miss his draft coverage; great insights from NFL scouts, and fairly reliable projections.
  20. What's the old saying: "You can't win the division in April, but you sure can lose it." Most of the divisions are close...the three teams playing sub .400 ball (Toronto, KC, SF) are a bit surprising, but there's a lot of baseball left.
  21. Michaels being cut is a surprise as I expected him to compete in TC at least. His inability to pickup the playbook must have been pretty bad for them to simply cut ties with him at this point. Largely have to agree; somewhat torn between being complementary to the team in giving Michael a chance to find a new club where he could make the 53-man, vs. wondering why we're letting him go before a trio of late-drafted rookies take a single snap in camp. Barring injuries, you'd have to assume 2 of the guys make the opening day roster, with the 3rd ending up on the practice squad. I do wish instead of taking a 3rd RB, they'd have tried to find another OL...but that's a minor gripe on a player who probably won't end up making the roster (particularly for a thin year in OL prospects). Having signed Evans to play guard makes it a bit easier to take a pass at the position in the early rounds this year, take another year to see what you have in Kyle Murphy, and plan to make a higher-priority pick in 2018. Classic needs, not BPA, draft by TT. Now we get to wait a few months before we (i.e., the fans) get to figure out if the new guys are any good.
  22. 4 picks out...2 guards (Dixon, Feeney) are still on the board, as is Kamara the RB from Tennessee, and Awuzie if they want another CB. (NFL Network reported Saints were willing to offer a 2018 2nd to move back into the round. I could see TT taking that action, if it's still available.)
  23. Hypothetical: If offered, would you trade the 33rd pick in 2017 for a 1st round pick in 2018? Don't really think there's anyone whose slipped that far as to justify someone else giving up a first...but I think you have to make the deal if if that offer comes around.
  24. Gotta think it's either Cook, Lamp, or a trade-down. Hard to argue with picking up the first pick on Friday and Saturday by sliding back 4 spots...even if they did let Watt go by.
