  1. At least they've managed to make a game of it... (fingers crossed.)
  2. If only you had been able to address the team before the first half...(That hurt just to listen to.)
  3. Somewhere in NYC, Jimmy Fallon weeps a single tear. "Nomahhhh" put him on the map back in the SNL days. I always liked Garciaparra. Great hitter, decent defense, and wasn't afraid to move away from shortstop when his skills started to decline. In many ways, he'll always be the Anti-Jeter.
  4. I think we may be at opposite ends of the TV spectrum; Modern Family does nothing for me, but I love Community. The pool game storyline was the "lose pretty" / "win ugly" dichotomy, playing off the ridiculousness of the school gym uniform. Besides, if you only see the main storyline on Community, you're missing the point. It's not about what's going on, so much as how the cast reacts to it. It's Abed trying to think of a version of himself that would strike up a conversation with a potential love interest....and coming up with Vampire Abed. Or him 'practicing' his skills by hitting on Annie, and channelling Don Draper in the process (since Alison Brie, the actress who plays Annie, is also a regular on Mad Men). Or the Dean taking a picture for 'evidence'. Community is just a really well done, ensemble comedy. The problem with P-Rec's second season is the first season. It took so long moving away from what it was trying to be and getting to what it is, that I think it lost a lot of its potential audience.
  5. I was actually in the process of saying "There needs to be an Evil Dead clip" as the clip aired. Big smile on my face from that one. My main highlight, however, was watching the non-acting awards with 2+ people presenting. Since they only got 45 seconds, the 2nd person to speak would invariably get cut away from if the first person started stammering. Special props go to the guy doing the 'wrap it up' thing with his hand. The second he leaned in to the mic, they cut away. How long until the Awards keep a crawl going on the lower screen recapping award winners & the technical Oscars? What did everyone else think about the presentation of Best Picture? Compared to the (overblown) congratulations to the best actor / actress....they didn't even recap the names of the nominees. Granted, they sprinkle in the descriptions of the nominees throughout the show, but it seemed like they cut things short with Hanks just to have the winner announced before 12 Eastern. I'd rather they just move the start time up than play timer-nazi with the winners, and pushing the actual gratitude to a glorified webcam. Anyone know why RDJ was wearing sunglasses during the bit with Tina Fey? Just struck me as odd.
  6. Considering a 4 seed almost assuredly puts them in Milwaukee for the opening weekend (as the NCAA tends to region-protect their top teams in the 'pod' system), the difference between a 4 & a 5 seed could be huge.
  7. Outrage! We should sign Doug Jones to a 1-day contract so he can retaliate against Zito in-kind.
  8. I think that any Widmore-related plot threads have to wait until the return of Desmond. I spoiler-texted that name because I don't know for certain that he's coming back....but I assume that he's the person who Jacob meant when talking to Hurley about the Lighthouse last week. Don't fully understand the turn in Sayid last night; mostly because I am left to ponder if the entirety of his actions were the 'message' he was sent to convey, or just the spoken message (which is how they presented it). Equally clueless about why killing the Japanese guy (Dogen) cleared the way for the smoke monster to enter the temple. I'd be disappointed if the show were answering too many questions now, but I just want most of those questions answered by the time the ride comes to a complete stop.
  9. I do not play a ton of real-time strategy games (more of a turn-based, Final Fantasy Tactics / Fire Emblem guy), but Valkyria Chronicles manages to bridge the gap between the different genres a bit. You only control one character at a time, with a set number of character controls comprising a single 'turn.' The enemy then gets their own turn, to move its own units. Unlike most other games, however, enemies within weapon range can shoot at you, and kill you while you're controlling a particular character. There's a demo for the game in the PSN store (now that PSN appears to be working again), based off a very early chapter in the game. Since the game caught your attention, I'd recommend trying that first.
  10. If you have a bluetooth headset for a cell-phone, you can simply pair that with the PS3 and you're good to go. The one complaint I've heard about the PS3 is that not enough users actually use the voice chat features, because the console doesn't ship with a headset of any kind. I would think that people playing a game like MAG would be the exception to that rule, however. (I'll also give the obligatory plug for Valkyria Chronicles, which is only $20 if you can still find it on store shelves.)
  11. Was playing Uncharted 2 last night and received the 'unable to connect to PSN' messages....along with an ill-timed clock reset (I set my clock manually after failing to connect). I'm only about a third of the way through that game, so starting over wouldn't necessarily kill me...but I really wanted to push through that game this week. If the problem isn't fixed before 3/9, we've got problems. 8 days from Final Fantasy 13....which is finally sinking in with me, as I've been waiting for this game for a few years now.
  12. Surprised that we've gone over a month without posting to the 24 thread, while the show has been on. Moving into the 'demonstrating our power' terrorist act on American soil portion of the season, which means there's still the matter of the annual government mole (my $ is on the Presidential advisor who tried to set up Renee Walker as a scapegoat last ep.) & identification of the real bad guy for this season. Well, that, and an Agent Pierce sighting. Not all that impressed with this season, but will still tune in after the much-needed return of 'Chuck' to my Monday evening TV lineup.
  13. Sunday: Family Guy, American Dad, anything new & animated on Adult Swim. Monday: Chuck (Favorite show on TV), 24 (the ultimate in can't turn away / car wreck TV), Castle Tuesday: Lost Wednesday: stuff that's already on my TiVo, Top Chef (in-season), South Park Thursday: Community, P-Rec, Office, 30 Rock, Burn Notice Friday: Dollhouse (when it was on) Saturday: SNL Stuff that I watch when not watching other stuff: AMtv / VH1's Nocturnal State (timeshifting = these networks actually playing music videos!) Archer White Collar Law & Order (I don't tell my TiVo to record it; it just knows...) The Closer (same here) Leverage (also don't record, but will invariably find it on TV and leave it there) Mythbusters Olympic Curling (now that I have hours of it recorded, that is)
  14. I guess I don't see the distinction between the 'Holden Caufield' reference and saying that ESPN appears to be fetish-izing Hannah Storm's wardrobe, with tight tops, school-girl skirts, and high-cut leather boots. Don't watch ESPN much outside of games I care about (NFL pre-game / NFL matchup shows, NFL draft, and NCAA tournament selection analysis being the exceptions), but there's always a certain boundary line that networks tread when using female reporters / anchors / analysts. It's not that we care about the background stories being covered during the basketball game....but if they're being discussed with Erin Andrews, our attention perks up. Ditto why Suzy Kolber will never want to be in a room with Joe Namath, ever. Guys are simple: we like sports and we like looking at pretty girls. When someone pulls back the curtain at ESPN a bit, and force you to think about the pairing, the higher-ups get nervous.
  15. Other than the sweepers you can drink beer while participating without setting it down or dramatically altering what you have to do. You have to set your beer down to bat or field in most cases.Pretty hard to drink a beer while in the hack throwing a stone, too (which is the curling equivalent of batting, I guess). So, aside from 3/4 of the active participants not being able to do what you're saying...I guess you're sorta right. (Of course, I've already admitted that I play on a team that chooses not to skip or sweep some ends so that the rest of the team can go drink and / or smoke during competition....so maybe I'm not the greatest ambassador for this sport. Not to mention, the ability to keep a beer on the ice is a selling point to a bunch of people I know.)
  16. Not to mention Universal Sports, which ironically isn't airing any of the Olympics events live....but will have the U.S. Olympic Curling Team trials from Feb. 2009 on TV friday morning....so there's that. (We received Universal Sports as a digital sub-channel after our local NBC station made the switch from analog to digital. I'm assuming most of the country gets it as well.)
  17. Having grown up in Central Wisconsin, then moving to Green Bay just before middle school, and then going to school at the UW....I used to joke with friends about following Dick Bennett the way others used to follow the Greatful Dead. (Which makes the current nickname for the students section all the more trippy.) I was also one of the UW students inside Camp Randall for the welcome home celebration. As soon as I saw the draw that put them against Arizona...I actually felt good about their chances for the upset. That was the type of stylistic mismatch that I had seen Dick Bennett coached teams shine through in the past (all the way back to Tony's UWGB team taking out Jason Kidd's Cal Bears). I'd be lying if I said I picked them to make the Final Four, but it was so much fun to watch them get there. Really interesting to see what some of the players are up to 10 years later. Amazed that Maurice Linton is working in an industry that requires the most attention in November and December....rather than a job where he can just coast until mid-January into February.
  18. I've been curling in Wausau for about 4 years now; this year was my first opportunity to skip in rookie league.I was actually at the Madison CC last October for their holiday / fun spiel (my first out-of-town spiel). It is a very nice facility. (That was also the first chance I had to demo the "no skip / no sweep" ends that my Thursday night team has been working up to for the past few years. Apparently, Debbie McCormick - the U.S. Womens' team skip - got a kick out of it when our skip did it in the same spiel a few years before.)
  19. For those watching the match, Denmark called timeout in the extra end and discussing strategy (in English BTW) they pretty much admitted they will only win if the US screws up. So set up a situation so that the US can screw up. Now I find out Schuster won bronze in Turino. Go Figure. Schuster played lead on the Torino team in '06. Pete Fenson was the skip. As someone who skips once a week, and plays lead the next night....it is impossible to emphasize enough the difference between the two spots. Lead throws 2 of the first 4 shots in the end. There is very little pressure, as you're rarely called upon to hit the other team's stones. (Unless the opposing lead throws one of their stones into the house, the 'free guard zone' rule prevents you from taking them out of play.) The Skip, on the other hand, calls every shot, sets the broom (the aiming point for the thrower), and calls sweepers on and off. As if that weren't enough, the skip throws 2 of the final 4 stones in every end....which requires a lot more precision than lead. It's like going from fullback to quarterback.
  20. Last night was about as good as it gets for team USA (and for NBC). I had to start the DVR to record White's second run. Now if only the U.S. Curling teams could win a game...

  22. If you're in the midwest, you should try to find a place to try it out. I know our local club (Wausau) has an open house this weekend, to coincide with some of the broadcast events. It's a great distraction from winter.
  23. A friend of mine pointed out this story in the Chicago Tribune talking about the improvements in future Badger Duje Dukan's game from last year to this year. Sounds like quite the fit for Bo's system, especially now that they've been more willing to push the ball on the break and look for easy shot opportunities.
  24. I acutally knew that....just didn't want to give the (false) impression that I watched Felicity. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. It wouldn't seem to make much of a difference to me. I'm hardly a physics major, but I don't think it's the density of the material that the luge-r runs into....so much as the decelleration from 90mph to 0mph on impact which causes the damage. Are we really that surprised that Luge is dangerous, by the way? The entire sport is based around the trade-off between speed and control over a series of sharp turns. That it doesn't happen more often is a testament to the athletes competing. There's a reason they call the face-first version "skeleton" after all.
