  1. I remember when I used to be excited by the Rule 5 draft (early in the Melvin years). I am thankful that our roster has gotten to the point where we don't think we can carry rule 5 players any more.
  2. Ryan will be part of the Brewers legacy. He is one of the all-time faces of the franchise.
  3. I know we had some guys seriously underachieve, but, overall, we did not field a very strong line-up this year.
  4. Cecil had that broken leg in 1978 which cost him a chunk of that season in his prime as well. Cecil gets hurt by a number of factors. He did sit on the bench (too much) in Boston, he may have hung on too long which cost him a lifetime .300 batting average, his best years were in Milwaukee, Sparky Anderson accused him of having a corked bat, and he didn't do many interviews. He was a terrific hitter. During the Bambi's Bombers/Harvey's Wallbangers run from 1978-1983, I think that he would have been considered our most dangerous hitter until Yount's MVP year. In my opinion, he is underappreciated. One more thing, we didn't see the video game numbers from hitters in the 1970s and 1980s like we have since. I feel like the players that I grew up watching have not received their due as a result.
  5. If we fired Craig he would be out of work for about 10 seconds. We are overachieving, not underachieving. As the last poster alluded to, CC will get a huge extension this off-season.
  6. The overall talent level in the organization seems to have improved. He deserves credit as a result. We have a ways to go, but the first time in a few years I feel like we headed in the right direction as an organization. His legacy will be the next group of trades that fills our gaps.
  7. I liked Carlos Leal as well last year. Thanks for the comments.
  8. Gatewood reminds me of a less polished Corey Hart. Gatewood is tall and real skinny, and when he hits the ball he hits it hard. Like Hart when he slumped, Gatewood has a tendency to have too long of a swing. I think he can overcome that. I really like his potential. I also like him in the field at 3rd. I think putting him at 1st could work. This also says that we must really like Erceg.
  9. If I remember right, the people on this board who really study the minors were surprised by Nottingham starting out at AA this year. They expected him to be in BC. I can't speak to his defense. I have never seen him play. I wouldn't give up on his offense yet because of his age. Getting back to catching defense. A couple of years ago we moved Coulter to the outfield and he really doesn't hit well enough for that. I am wondering if the Brewers don't have to accept some of the responsibility. In the last 40 years we have developed one two-way catcher: Jonathan Lucroy. That is not a good track record. I am wondering if Nottingham and Coulter couldn't be coached up a little better and develop into catchers.
  10. I same to remember a similar thread trying to project the 2006 team. My rotation of Ben Sheets, Chris Capuano, Mike Jones, Ben Hendrickson, and Luis Martinez didn't quite pan-out. I suspect that we will sell off an asset by 2018 for talent at a position of weakness. That is one reason why we have accumulated so many centerfielders.
  11. With the organizational talent we have in center field we may be in a position to move some of them for players in positions of need.
  12. I suspect that the PTBNL will be contingent on a potential contract extension for Lucroy. If he signs one this year we get a better player than if he doesn't.
  13. It's time to quit negotiating and decide if you can live with the deal on the table. If you can, git'r'done.
  14. I see that Mendez was terrific at High Desert. Now I want him. I remember what a graveyard place that was for our pitchers when High Desert was our affiliate.
  15. What do people know about Armstrong? I am no expert on other teams' farm systems. He appears to have been rather successful in the minors.
  16. Heller and Feyereisen are the other two going to New York.
  17. I remember Darrell Porter catching when I was a little kid. I think that one reason he isn't talked much about as a Brewer is that he was the MVP of the 1982 World Series against us (IIRC). I would say that Lucroy is easily the best catcher in a Brewers uniform. Simmons struggled behind the plate and he really didn't put up the offensive numbers he put up for Cardinals. Surhoff couldn't throw out my grandma. Nillson was bad defensively and made more mound visits per game than Carlton Fisk.
  18. I agree with the previous post. No need to rush Arcia unless we magically end up in a playoff race. Phillips needs to stay in the minors as well. He only has a partial year at AA behind him.
  19. Back before cable TV sports on TV was a happening. I remember watching the game of the week regularly and looking forward to it. Joe and Tony Kubek were a terrific team, worthy of a happening. Joe had a sense of humor which helped make bad games entertaining. My favorite line of Joe's was about Yogi Berra when Yogi had a slump while throwing out runners, "Yogi got so frustrated that he tried to throw the ball down on the ground.....and he missed!"
  20. I don't think that we are really tanking it. We aren't doing this to get high draft choices. We are doing this to put us in a position to truly contend again. IMO, we have more talented young players in our organization now then in any time that I can remember. At least, at any time since 2003. We are not just getting rid of guys and hoping to get lucky with people who aren't in our organization yet. We seem to be headed in the right direction.
  21. The Baseball Tonight crew did not like the trade from the Brewers perspective. They like Phillips but not the other 3.
  22. We led the division for most of the season with, by far, the worst first base production in the division. Lind does not have to be great, he just has to be better than what we had.
  23. We got kicked out of New Orleans and Louisville when they built new stadiums, if I remember correctly. Did Indianapolis do the same to us? AAA people sure don't like us.
  24. Does anyone remember when Enrique Cruz was a sure thing?
