  1. I wonder if the problem with some of our bench production isn't lack of playing time. Their numbers might improve a bit if they played more. I am not saying Macha is wrong about playing time, I am saying that if Hart or Braun goes down and Nelson gets some regular playing time that his numbers may balance out and improve.
  2. While Brenly wasn't announcing for the Cubs when Sammy Sosa played, I know that no one in the Chicago was upset by his actions. He was far more flamboyant after his home runs than Ryan Braun.
  3. I would like to see Macha use more of his bench too. But I also think that the days of Brad Nelson-prospect are over. This is a guy who has 8 years of minor league experience. This is more like Jim Rushford coming to the majors than Prince Fielder. We are not wasting a prospect here. This is what Brad Nelson's entire major league career is going to look like.
  4. I think that the 6-inning start is mislabled as a quality start. It is more of a minimally competent start. I think that 7 innings constitute a quality start. 3 innings of bullpen work usually requires 4 pitchers. 2 innings usally requires 2 pitchers. A lot less can go wrong in 2 innings of your best relief pitchers than 3 innings worth of 4 pitchers.
  5. Our staff is starting to remind me of the days of Jamey Wright, Jimmy Haynes, Everett Stull, John Snyder, etc....
  6. When we got Smith I was thinking he would make the club. It appears that Macha may be losing confidence with some of the guys in the bullpen. I could see Smith getting called up quickly.
  7. Are Gamel's errors throwing errors, does he have bad hands, or does he have bad feet? I don't know if you can fix bad hands but guys do become more accurate throwers and their footwork can improve. Wade Boggs and George Brett were bad 3rd basemen when they came up to the majors but they became great fielders before they retired. My worry isn't Gamel's defense by itself, it is can we put another bad defender on the the infield. Prince and Rickie are among the poorer defenders at their positions. I don't know if we can afford to start 3 poor defenders.
  8. No matter who you rooted for, you were a Mark Fidrych fan in 1976. I can't think of anybody in any sport at any time who was quite like the Bird. He was a clown who just happened to be the best pitcher in baseball in 1976. He was an original. I have often thought how fans were robbed by Fidrych's short career. He should have been on the Tigers World Series team in 1984.
  9. Just for the point of clarification, I was never a Jeff Suppan fan before he came to Milwaukee. But I am going to come to his defense in this situation. He really struggled in September and in two starts this season. He did finish Spring training well though. Over the course of his career he has been a slow starter who has finished seasons well. The real problem with Suppan is his contract. We overpaid him. As a result we couldn't seriously negotiate for Sabathia. We also decided to put our money into Suppan instead of Sheets (Since Sheets isn't pitching we are ahead right now, I suspect that will change). Suppan is a back-end of the rotation guy. He pitches around left-handed hitters and power hitters (he tries to get them to swing at bad pitches) and hopes to get the other guys out to limit the damage. I suspect that over time this season Braden Looper and Dave Bush won't be any better than him (I don't know how to figure Bush's effectiveness because he puts up a lot of zeros and gives up a lot of big innings). I would still like to see McClung in the rotation.
  10. I think it is too early for us to really evaluate the Brewers yet. But of course I will try. We still make too many errors. Maybe this coaching staff will be able to improve on that. I think we have too many feast or famine hitters. We need more OBP guys. It will be interesting to see Sveum's influence on our hitters as the season goes along. I heard all last year that the key to our line-up was Weeks. I think the key to us scoring runs is the 5-spot. When that spot gets hot, Fielder and Braun will get hot. Actually, I like our bullpen more than I did last year. I think Julio is miscast as long-man though. We will consistently be at a disadvantage in the starting pitching match-ups however. I don't think Macha knows this team real well yet. Change could occur gradually over the course of the season. We still determine pitching roles by contract, that bothers me. I would like to see McClung in the rotation. I think that he is better as a starter. I think he was a better starter last year than Suppan, Bush, or Parra. Plus, he attacks hitters. We have a bunch of "pitch-around" guys. Suppan, Bush, and Looper tend to not to challenge left-handed hittes and power hitters. Sometimes they will get burned. Suppan is Suppan. He is what he always was. We just overpaid for him. I think that this will be a year of evaluation and then in the off-season will change the look of the team (if this season goes bad).
  11. When I was a kid I used to get mad because I couldn't find Bucks play-offs games on the radio (no ESPN in those days, and no Green Bay station carried Eddie Doucette and the Bucks broadcasts) because the Brewers were always on the stations that carried the Bucks. Now, when the Brewers are the better team and watch games instead of listening to them, the Bucks get precedent. In defense of FSN, had the Bucks stayed in the play-offs and the late season games weren't on, there would have been a lot of complaining about that. I was never mad about the Bucks being on during the George Karl-Glenn Robinson-Sam Cassell-Ray Allen days. I can't believe it, but I am starting to think of those as "good old days" the way I used to think of the Lynn Dickey era as "good old days" for the Packers.
  12. I don't think much of Kevin Gregg, so with him pitching in the 8th and with the Cubs using so many relievers to get to him, I felt good about our chances to score in the 9th. I was afraid we would give up a couple in the top of the 9th until I saw CV out there. That strategy was a departure from the past. However, I would bet that Macha wouldn't have used Hoffman in that situation.
  13. I went to a basketball game at Manitowoc Lutheran high school this winter. We started making fun of one of the officials (amongst ourselves, we weren't heckling him) for looking like a student. The people sitting in front of us said that he was running for mayor and that he had been elected to the city council while still in high school. We thought that was a funny story. Now the guy is mayor.
  14. I think that Riske is just not ready for the season to start. I think it is injury-related. It seems to me that he needs a couple of more weeks of Spring training. My worry with him is that, due to early season ineffectiveness, he won't become sharp. I think he gets consistent innings it will work out. I just don't see how he gets those innings. We can't let him blow games to get sharp. My other worry is Looper. He doesn't look like he is ready for Spring training to end either.
  15. I think that McGehee has to make the team so that we have a right-handed bat coming off of the bench besides Rivera. I also think that Gwynn will make the team ahead of Duffy because I believe Duffy is on a minor league contract (correct me if I am wrong). It would be the easiest way to keep both players.
  16. I would put Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven in the hall. In my mind there has been a bias against players from the 70s and 80s vs. players of the 50s and 60s. There are a number of players in the 70s and 80s whose statistics are better than Bill Mazeroski, for example. I think it has do with the romanicized coverage of baseball in the 50s and 60s vs. the way the sport is covered now.
  17. In the end, we are a low-revenue stream team. We will always have a tighter budget than the Cubs and Cardinals. I think that we are going younger this year with the idea that we will take on more salary in 2010. I remember being dismayed in 1992 because our young talent didn't have a lot of major league experience at that time. Sal was counting on every young player to succeed. Our other problem in 1992 was that we allowed pitchers to leave (Bosio, Plesac, Holmes) without a lot of pitching prospects in the minors. The current Brewers seem to have a better organizational plan, although I fear that we are short pitching too. When this team trades Paul Molitor for Kevin Reimer I will panic.
  18. I am waiting for the Marlins to trade major league talent for a player to be conceived later!
  19. I think that the posts about the limited amount of games had something to do with the ratings. I also think the Brewers poor month of September contributed to the ratings differences. Finally, the fact that Suppan was pitching in an elimination didn't help much either. I flipped back and forth between the games staying mainly with the Brewer game. Most people I talked to did the opposite. I think if the Phillies hadn't scored early more people would have been like me. We hadn't made a lot of big comebacks in September, there was little hope to latch onto once the Phillies had their big inning.
  20. Did we have someone throwing behind Torres? Why do we think Torres is still a closer?
  21. I just wanted to post on a play-off thread. It is kind of exciting. I remember the 1982 play-offs. I seem to remember the experts counting those Brewers out because of injuries. I am hoping history repeats itself.
  22. For Ned to be fired now suggest that something happened that we are unaware of. Oddly timed firings often are the result of insubordination or player insurrection. I think that there was some kind of meeting that took place between MA (or DM at MA's request) and Ned, or the players and management. Someone then came to the conclusion that this just couldn't work. That is my guess. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Ted just doesn't want to manage. His background has been in talent evaluation and player development. He has had health problems in the past. He may have asked to be reassigned.
  23. We have now gone through collapses in the second half of the season in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. I see a pattern. Why can Tampa Bay handle the pressure of the pennant race so much better than we can?
