  1. I would imagine that Kranitz encouraged the Brewers to draft Egan. I would imagine that he would have seen Egan in Spring Training.

  3. We won't break the bank on Rickie Weeks. Why? Brent Lawrie!
  4. Every year we hear rumors about how the Brewers are going to trade their best players to the Red Sox or Yankees. They are always started by writers who would like to see our guys on their team. My guess is that their have been talks initiated by the Red Sox. Doug probably listened instead of hanging up. I doubt their was any negotiations.
  5. This could turn into that old "do strikeouts matter" thread. It is another subject where we could have endless debate between the diehard Sabermetric devotees and the oldschool, more affective baseball strategists. Personally, I hate making outs on the bases but I think we need to be more aggressive than what we have been. In my opinion we don't do a good enough job at getting runners from first to third. I don't know which camp that puts me in. I do want issue one caution. New managers always say that they are going to be real aggressive on the bases. They also like to talk about hitting-and-running. That usually lasts about a month. It is kind of like when Bo Ryan said he was going to bring fast break basketball to the Badgers (granted, they do break more than when Dick was coaching). I expect to see more aggressive base running, more steals, and more bunts this year. I expect to see more outs on the bases. I also suspect that those things will happen in smaller quantitites than what even Roenicke expects. They say that he is a smart man. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and expect to him settle into a style that works for the Brewers, even if it means deviating from his stated preferences.
  6. I think that Roenicke's success or lack thereof will be affected more by his ability to motivate players to play hard and with discipline on a daily basis then by his strategy.
  7. If I were Bobby Valentine I would probably want a guarantee in my contract that the Brewers salaries would continue to rise. That could have been a problem.
  8. Why do I think that one of the unknown candidates is someone associated with the Rangers in the 90s. I hope it is not Jerry Narron.
  9. I almost wish that we had a separate thread on each managerial candidate. So many of these guys are familiar to me as players but I know little about their coaching careers. Wallach and Roenicke are two guys who I know little about their backgrounds other than what their last assignment. I know a little bit more about Cora and Listach. What I like about this search is that Doug has been curious. My criticism about the last search was that Doug only interviewed guys he already knew. I have a feeling that he has been told that his fate as GM may rest on this managerial decision. Valentine intrigues me. I think he gets instant respect when he walks into the clubhouse. I am sure that he won't come cheap and we may feel that his $$$ may be better suited in other uses. I don't know much about Cora's personality but I like his background. I also like what I know about Listach but I am having a hard time with the idea of hiring another ex-Brewer. He does have the pedigree though. Right now I would say the Bob Melvin is maybe the guy on the list that I like the least. I don't know if he has a strong enough personality to the ship afloat when things go bad.
  10. If the Brewers are going to interview 10 candidates then they Doug really doesn't know who he is going to hire.
  11. Let's not forget that when the 2008 play-offs started Yo had a total of 21 major league starts under his belt, 4 in all of 2008.
  12. 170. I discovered that I had successfully removed Ron Belliard and Jeffrey Hammonds from my memory. I couldn't remember Steve Woodard or Edgar Diaz's first name.
  13. Samuel is rumored to be a contender for the Pittsburgh and Toronto jobs. Also rumored to be in consideration for the Toronto job is Yankee third base coach Rich Thomson. He is from Ontario. With that lineage I would think that Doug and Gord couldn't help but consider him.
  14. In response to the comment on Melvin, I just meant that DM is a solid GM. He has made some mistakes. All GMs do. He doesn't get do-overs the way that larger revenue teams do. The difference between us and Twins has been the development of pitching. Some of that has to be on Jack Z. A new GM might be better, but in my opinion he is more likely to be worse.
  15. I don't think that you will see that Brewers promote from within, even though I think we have some worthy candidates. As a general rule of thumb you don't promote from within when your fire a manager. You look for new ideas from outside the organization.
  16. I think that both Melvin and Macha are good baseball people. Macha just wasn't the right fit here. I think he would fit better with a mature AL team. I see that there is some real Melvin hatred here. I know that Doug isn't perfect, but I don't want to lose him because I am afraid of what might replace him. Doug is a professional. People got tired of Harry Dalton (the greatest GM in team history) and the organization tanked. Back to the manager position. I think that we are going to form a "triangle of personalities". We replaced Ned Yost with the more laid, and alledgedly better judge of talent, in Macha. Regardless, we were going to hire someone who wasn't Ned. Now we will hire someone who isn't Ned or Ken. This person will be positive, enthusiastic, and a good communicator; someone who makes it fun to come to the ballpark. I think Doug will look for a baseball version of Bill Cowher.
  17. I am already missing the Brewers. I have to admit that I had higher expectations for this season than many over the last 20 years. This probably could be its own thread, but I think if we brought the same team back that we had at the end of this season we would have a winning season. We don't have to blow this team up, yet.
  18. If we keep Prince I doubt that we will have the pitching next year to contend. By the time his draft picks get to the majors we will be losing the current corps of players. I was in college during the Trebelhorn era. I went to a lot of games during that time (for a college student) and I don't want to go through another extended period of being at the edge of contention/edge of .500. I would like to see us get more immediate returns for Prince and take a chance on legitimately contending for a period of time.
  19. I don't think that you can retire Ben's number until after you retire the numbers of Jim Colborn, Mike Caldwell, and Ted Higuera. And I don't think that we should retire their numbers either.
  20. I don't think that Yo is right physically. I wonder if we should shut him down.
  21. I like the suggestions of Valentine, Gonzalez and Listach. I like Dale as well. It seems that he has the players respect. I can't tell you the specifics any more but I remember some negative articles about Macha last year and it seemed from the article that Sveum was Macha's communicator. In other words it seems that Dale has been more than a hitting coach and may have kept Macha's boat from sinking. I don't think that I would like Don Money. Too many of our minor league players come to the big leagues with poor fundamentals despite spending a number of years in our system. This may not be fair to Don but I don't know why you promote someone from a minor league system that may have weak coaching.
  22. In my opinion the real issue with Manny is that he is ineffective out of the stretch. I don't know if there are any numbers to support my claim or not. He seems to struggle more with his control out of the stretch and it appears to me that his fastball slows down and flattens out when he is in the stretch. Granted, my "eye test" is not very scientific and is easily disputed.
  23. If we hang on to Weeks I think that he will move to the middle of the order.
  24. That is the year I went to my first Brewer game. Here is another link that could help: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/1975.shtml
  25. Prince will get 8 years at about 180 million, with the money front-loaded and Prince will get an escape clause after 5 or 6 years.
