  1. Is Gomez much different than Rickie Weeks offensively at the same point in their major league careers?
  2. The first time through the order we took some pitches and worked the count a little and got some guys on base. Since then we have been getting ourselves out early in the count. We seem to be too immature, or too stupid to recognize what works and what doesn't. I am so incredibly frustrated with this. Every pitcher pitches great against us. After a while I think we have to recognize that the common thread is not them, it is us. We have to change our approach to offense and defense. I don't want to here RR talk about getting more aggressive on the bases. That doesn't do any good without baserunners. Our starting pitching can hide some weaknesses, but unless our position players have some sort of epiphany we will finish about where we finished last year. I am almost too the point where I am rooting for us to lose so that we trade Prince, and maybe a couple of others, and then we can retool. As presently constituted I don't know if we can win enough games to contend. Right now this is the most unwatchable Brewer team since 2002. I am starting to miss Ken.
  3. I don't know if there are stats to measure these things, but I like the Nieves calls a game and I like the way blocks ball in the dirt (so far). I also think he throws better than Kottaras. It is wrong though, to base someone's defensive ability solely on the way they throw out runners. It is important, but it is not the only factor.
  4. I am with Oxy. George Kottaras isn't good. He will hit for some power over the long haul he will be a near automatic out. He is not the catcher that Nieves is.
  5. To me the most glaring mistake in the 10th was that we didn't set up force outs. We could have loaded the bases and then a ground ball in the infield like the last one would have been a double play, inning over. We also would have had a much easier time getting the out at home. 5 infielders with no force outs is a recipe for disaster. Did we even have the infield in at the end? Or was it halfway? I reallly like the way Roenicke has worked the bullpen match-ups, but I think he does way too many things just to do them. He seems to want to show that he is the smartest guy in the park, thinking of things that other people don't. Instead, he is doing things that other managers have thought of and dismissed. I am hoping that Jerry or Dale will convince him to reign it in a little.
  6. I like Kottaras coming off of the bench more than I do Nievesbecause Kottaras hits left-handed and has a little pop, but if Lucroy got hurt again I would rather have Nieves start. I think that Nieves is a better defensive catcher especially in terms of calling pitches and blocking balls. I don't think that Kottaras can hit or catch well enough to start for any period of time. If Kottaras wasn't a left-handed hitter he wouldn't be in the major leagues. Also, I don't mind 3 catchers. It makes it more likely that we will pinch-hit or double-switch with that position. We also won't have games like last year where we let our pitcher bat late in games because we only have one position player left. Now, that one position player will be a light-hitting catcher and we won't be upset when we have our pitcher hit.
  7. I have been to a couple of Timber Rattlers games in the last couple of years and I have noticed that we have very few international players on our roster while the other teams have at least 5. I am sure that plays into our farm system weakness. I wonder if we are spending too much on major league talent (or journeymen) and not enough on signing international players. Just a thought?
  8. Right now we are really, really bad. That should change. But we can't wait until Greinke and Hart come back to play better. We are not doing anything particularly well over these 4 games. It is as if we weren't ready for the season to start. With this line-up hitters #2, #6, #7, and #8 have to think about extending innings and turning the line-up over. They need to work counts and draw walks. Coach Roenicke it is time to quit the just happy to be here routine and get these guys to respond to their roles. The key us to scoring a lot of runs this year are those hitters. We know in the end what Weeks, Braun, Fielder, Hart, and McGehee will do. They need some guys to get on base for them. I know I am overreacting, but I don't see any difference between this year's team and last year's team. Same low IQ, questionable effort style of play.
  9. The problem isn't the 2 for the Braves, it is the 1 for the Brewers. I want to rant irrationally, but I will stop for now.
  10. What was Ron's plan there? Did he think that Will Nieves was automatic when it came to driving the ball. That was one of the dumbest strategical decisions I have ever seen in all of my life of watching baseball. You don't bunt with the 7th hitter, period. I think that the guys who study statistics will tell you that your chances of scoring are greater with 3 attempts to score a guy from second than two attempts to score a guy from third. Finally, the guy who bunted is a far better hitter than the guys that followed him. What a terrible inning!
  11. I wasn't saying that I was throwing in the towel in my previous post. I was just trying to explain why people are overreacting. The disappointing thing to me about this series was that we did the same things wrong that we did at the start of last season. I would like to think that we are capable of learning. I watched the Tigers and Yankees on opening day wear out each starting pitchers by taking a lot of pitches. We got better at that as the season went along last year. This weekend we swung at a lot of pitchers' pitches. Our pitches fell behind in the count way too often this series. Aside from a couple of plays by Rickie, I don't remember the D bailing our pitches out at all either. I hope that we have enough of a sense of urgency and self-discipline that we quickly eliminate these repetitive mistakes that cost us games last year.
  12. Knowing that we have Johnny Wholestaff pitching on Wednesday makes this start to the season even tougher to take. I know that some on this board don't understand the frustrations of others, but we are "going all in" this year. We are going to need about 95 wins to win the division. I think that the East gets the wild card so I doubt that will be an option. It is tough to lose a lot in a row at the start and win 95 games. Plus, those of old enough to remember how we were supposed to win it in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989, and then see our team dispersed when we may have good enough to win in 1993, can get kind of nervous when we see our team play bad baseball. How does one get into the in-game chat? I used to see an icon on the in-game web page but I don't any more.
  13. I would move a team back into Montreal. I have no logical reasoning for this. I just remember when I was a kid Montreal had a lot of young talent (Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Steve Rogers, etc..), that stadium was a tough place to play for visiting teams because of how raucous the fans were. I know how things changed after those guys moved on but I know that the fans that were left were hard core. Please don't tell me how dumb this idea is, it is simply a statement of nostalgia.
  14. If you don't put two RBI guys behind Prince he will never see a strike for the entire season. That is why one of the 3 weaker hitters will hit second. I still think that Counsell will see a lot of time in that position. I also wouldn't rule out Gomez leading off, but I wouldn't bet on it either.
  15. I think that we will see a lot of Counsell batting second, which I guess means that Betancourt will also hit second. I worry about our offense a bit. We may still be a feast or famine team that puts up a lot of zeroes.
  16. Another mistake may have been bringing up Balfour when we did. He wasn't ready yet. I don't remember if he was on the 40-man roster or not before we brought him up, but if we had waited to bring him up ( September ?) it would have been easier to carry him on the roster and bring him back in 2008.
  17. Ultimately the quality of our depth will be determined by which players with big league experience we sign to minor league contracts. Those are the guys we may have to turn to in emergencies.
  18. Gooden, Maggette, and Jennings are not good defensively. In that way Skiles is now putting a team on the floor that is more in tune with his core philosophies.
  19. He would be an improvement offensively, but I don't know how many more bad defensive players we can handle.
  20. I was going to start a thread like this today as I have been thinking about it too. I have been hoping that the Brewers keep 3 catchers so that we could pinch hit for one occasionally. However we then get real left-handed on the bench. I think that we signed Nieves for a reason so that leaves Kottaras as the odd man out. I think that Gamel stays as a pinch-hitter and spot starter at 3rd and right. Also, I have a feeling that a different set of eyes may decide the Kameron Loe (eventually this spot will belong to Mark Rogers) is a starter and Chris Narveson is a LOOGY. C- Lucroy, Nieves INF- Fielder, Weeks, Betancourt, McGehee, Counsell, Gamel, Cruz OF- Hart, Gomez, Braun, Dickerson, Boggs SP- Greinke, Gallardo, Marcum, Wolf, and Loe Cl- Axford SU- Braddock, Hawkins LM- Parra LOOGY- Narveson MR- McClendon, Green I still have a gut feeling about Kottaras making this team, maybe an injury will open a spot for him. I am guessing that we will work a trade to keep Egan in the minors. EDIT- can't count. Get rid of Cruz. I like to cheat.
  21. This may be the wrong thread for this, but Ned has told the KC reporters that Melky Cabrera has been signed to play centerfield, so he doesn't know where to project Cain. Sounds like the same old Ned to me.
  22. I don't think that it is a coincidence that the two million we are getting from the Royals equals the two million that they are getting from Seattle.
  23. From what I have read about Miles Prentice, I hope he buys the Astros. I think that would be good for the Brewers.
