  1. I see comments which state we will keep McGehee until he hits peak value. That is easy to say. It is also the trick of being a GM. His peak value may have passed. He may get traded and become a league MVP. How does one know when he hits his peak value? The reality with a small market teams is that you hang onto players until you can replace them, or until you feel that they achieve a salary beyond what they will produce. I think that McGehee will stick for 2 or 3 more years and then get traded.
  2. I had heard that Redd's agent is out looking for potential trading partners. I heard that before it was announced that he was having troubles with his re-hab. I have also heard that if the knee continues to be a problem that he may retire.
  3. I would assume that Capuano will be a free agent after this season. That could have something to do with us not wanting to commit to him at the expense of a younger, more gifted, but more unreliable pitcher.
  4. I went to my first Rattler game in 15 years last night. I thought Odorizzi seemed real polished. My concerns with him were that there were not a lot of swings and misses on his fastball. I didn't have the greatest seats to view this, but I don't think he threw a change-up. If he did it was sparatic and ineffective. On the positive side he was able to throw strikes with three different pitches. Also, I was shocked by how much bigger the Great Lakes players were than the Rattlers players. Other than Richardson and Morris it seemed like men against boys. I know that I should be careful here because Sal Bando liked to draft big people and we know how that turned out. One other thing I noticed was that Great Lakes started 4 Dominican and 1 Venezuelan position players, while we started zero (we did start 3 Canadians). People talk about money affecting franchises at the big league level but I think that is an area where $ makes a difference in developing ball players. The Dodgers likely have more money to spend on undrafted free agents than we have.
  5. I think that the conversation of "trade or sign Fielder" needs to stop. He will become a free agent. That is what Scott Boras guys do. It just becomes a matter of when do we pull the trigger. That is why I think we need to keep Hart. We just don't have a lot of power in the organization once Prince goes. I also don't know how much power we will get in return for Fielder.
  6. I am confident that Fielder will eventually be traded. It just won't be this season. He will make the deal in the off-season. I hope we don't sell off too much this season. I don't know how the books look for the Brewers but with Hall, Suppan, and probably Fielder coming off of the books we will have some flexibility. We should be able to afford Hart and Weeks next year. I would like to keep Hart just because we don't have a lot of power hitting corner outfielders in the system.
  7. Is Garcia throwing a screwball? His breaking ball reminds me of Valenzuela's screwball.
  8. Remember it was Larry Harris's plan to clear out the roster this year and go after Dwyane Wade. He would have had his building blocks of Wade, Bogut, Yi, and Redd. Ummm, considering that we would have no chance at Wade I like Hammond's plan better.
  9. I saw Robin Yount's 3000th hit. I was there the night Jose Canseco hit his 41st home run and got his 40th stolen base. I saw Al Hrabosky almost walk in the winning run against the Brewers only to have Marty Pattin come in mid at bat to finish the job. The first game I ever went to I saw Henry Aaron play for the Brewers, while Reggie Jackson played centerfield for the A's. Oh, and I saw a Jeff Suppan victory last season.
  10. Does putting Suppan in the game mean that we are throwing in the towel? They said that Suppan is a fan favorite in St. Louis. What they didn't say is that Suppan has become a fan favorite of every team he pitches against.
  11. I would hope that it is Capuano tomorrow, but I think it might be Dave Bush.
  12. If we need to throw someone out there to save the bullpen we should use Hoffman. He isn't really part of it right now.
  13. I still like the corps of this team. But it is really underachieving. Like the rest of you, I am sick of it. This team acts like it is playing out the string in September. It is like watching 2002 again. Something needs to change. I am not going to watch Keith Olbermann followed by Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
  14. How did we end up with the bad Claudio this year? I guess that last year was a mirage. He may be purged soon.
  15. I have a feeling that the wrong guy is being blamed for some of these signings. I think that some of these signings are really Mark Attanasio signings. I have no proof of this. I think Suppan was an Attanasio signing. I wouldn't be surprised if Davis and/or Hawkins were signed because Mark felt that Doug wasn't being aggressive enough. I also think that Mark is afraid to go backwards in payroll because it may send a message to fan that we are not trying hard enough. This is a just a gut feeling partially based on watching years of Herb Kohl meddling with the Bucks.
  16. You do realize that we could have easily pushed Wolf back into this series by having Suppan take his normal turn. We have been swept twice by the Cubs and they haven't seen Gallardo or Wolf yet.
  17. I told myself this season that I would not get get carried away. I would not overreact to bad stretches of baseball. It is a long season. I am not going to call for firings. I am not going to post my normal "this is what happens when pitching roles are decided by salaries" comment. Ummm, this is getting tough to watch. Mental mistakes, physical mistakes, poor execution. I am not sure how this turns around. I believe that we have talent. I have to remember not to overreact. One legitimate complaint. We will really struggle in close games with an all left-handed bench and without a LOOGY. That roster make-up needs to change.
  18. Wasn't Mulder the Oakland pitcher with the hip problem? If he was, that could have led to the shoulder problems.
  19. It used to be that announcers joked that you had to be a good hitter to win a gold glove because that was about the only way to get a recognizable name. I get the feeling that now a lot people (I mean voters) believe that hitting is really part of the criteria. There are so many more ways to measure defense in the 21st century, yet the gold glove award seems to be less and less accurate.
  20. We just traded our back-up shortstop for a starting centerfielder, and that is a bad thing?
  21. The Bucks had that terrible stretch in the 3rd quarter where they had a ton of turnovers. Hopefully getting Delfino back tonight will give them another offensive player on the floor and will limit some of those sloppy perimeter passes.
  22. Watching highlights on that board was always an adventure. I never knew where the ball was, and I wasn't always sure where the players were. Yet I still wish it were in operation today somewhere in Miller Park. I wonder if the one guy from Switzerland who could fix it is still alive?
  23. It seemed like Macha didn't really get a feel for this team until the last month of the season. I think he spent most of the season using people in ways that they were used previously. It was like he was renting the team instead of taking ownership of the situation. It will be interesting to see what he does next season.
  24. I think that Narveson should be given a legitimate shot at the rotation. I haven't seen enough of him to have an impression other than that. I like what I saw. He doesn't appear to be a top of the rotation guy, but I think his stuff can get righthanders out better than left-handers.
  25. Axford is big leaguer. I think we will see him again next April. I am not happy with 80-82 but about 6 weeks ago I thought we would be lucky to win 72. Teams can get from 80 to 90 wins without changing the entire roster. I have some optimism for next year, but Doug needs to come through for us in the off-season!
