  1. Who would interest the Padres more, a proven all-star shortstop about to hit arbitration, or one of the most exciting (shortstop) prospects in all of baseball, who will be cheap for at least three years and you control for at least six? I understand we match up well with the Pads, but I would think Alcides would be their target.
  2. Well find me a lower career ERA for a pitcher with at least 200IP in the last 100 years. He has never failed as a starter, and he has always had the high K numbers. But I do agreew with you; he isn't worth Braun unless you see him as a starter, which I do.
  3. Unfortunately, this starting pitcher has been miscast in the role he so ably filled tonight.
  4. It's better to trade a player a year too early than a year too late.-Branch Rickey...or should it be Rickie. Nevertheless, this offseason considering the dearth of power-hitting shortstops this offseason, JJ's value should be quite high, and quite ripe for plucking a front-o-tha-rotation pitcher this offseason.
  5. Well we all said the same thing about Rich Harden and they still got it done. Nevertheless, it would probably be Wandy/Pence/Towles (if he has ANY value)/Bourn....umm seriously, HOW can Houston put together a package?
  6. What about this.... The Brewers trade: Hardy Hart Suppan Lucroy...though it may take the Angel "Grand" Salome The Tigers trade: Verlander Magglio Inge The Tigers supposedly have interest in Hardy, as well as interest in unloading Magglio's contract. Supposedly, last offseason, they were also interested in getting out from under Inge's contract. They free themselves of those two contracts, though at the cost of their ace. But in return, they get Hardy, Hart (who may be coming off a poor year, but he is but a year removed from putting up Soriano-type numbers), Suppan (an innings-eating pitcher who can be plugged in for Verlander's 200IP) and a catching prospect.
  7. What is the opinion on Takashi Saito?
  8. Well Drew could play CF too. But Youk is their guy, for better or for worse. Also, when I opined that a Masterson for Hardy trade would look good, my friend who is from Boston said that they were comfortable with Jed Lowrie there. I wouldn't be, but apparently Bo-town loves him.
  9. Let me ask you guys this question, would you trade Braun straight-up for a starting pitcher who put up: 230IP 270K 53BB 161H with an "unsightly" ERA of 1.85 Would that be worth Braun?
  10. I'd be a bit leery of signing JJ for the same reason many were questioning the merit of signing Corey last winter. Yo would be at the top of my list, followed closely by Bush (poor man's Suppan? More like poor man's Oswalt or Carpenter). He has lead our team in shutouts, wins, and has willed our team to victory on multiple occasions. He also had a longer npo-hit bid than CC last year. And finally, the guy I would lock up long term before all these players is Doug Melvin. Jack Z. may get the credit for the scouting of the prospects, but they are limbs, while Melvin is the brains of the body. Much like our owner, he isn't afraid to go against the norm, whether it be with the Sexson deal where we got 6 players we could later trade for other needs, or whether it be signing Cameron/Kendall/Gagne, with only one guaranteed year, thus forcing them to prove their worth, or lack thereof in one such case. Nevertheless, he isn't afraid to take a chance. Pay the man.
  11. When I mentioned protection, I did so in regards to Hart's inability to take a walk. With a flailer behind him, Prince couldn't be as selective, knowing the person behind him wouldn't let him take the easy stroll to second. With Weeks behind him, you would imagine we would see more back-to-back walks, with Mike Cameron/3B offseason target batting behind them in the six-hole. Prince may clog the basepaths, curbing Rickie's SB's, but, God forbid, Prince were to record an out while Braun and Weeks got a hit and took a walk, respectively, our new manager could have some fun on the basepaths. Does anyone else wonder if he hurt himself last offseason, and it *@!!*$%* his ability to steal bases? I understand he's a power hitter, but his speed was always what excited me. If he were to give the impression he might take a base, perhaps Prince would see more FB's instead of the slider away in the dirt.
  12. Rickie Weeks...anyone??? And as for those who question if Alcides could make the AA-to-the-majors jump, Ned Yost was so impressed by the young Venezuelan that he was contemplating bringing the speedster with him to Milwaukee from Spring Training. I like Hardy, always have, but with all of our cornerstones about to hit arbitration, there are many players ripe to be picked by other clubs. However, the only player who has an MLB-ready player behind him is JJ. What is he worth? Well I can't concretely set his value but if I were a gambling man, I would say by Spring Training next year,.we're going to have our answer.
  13. If not for the Casey Blake trade, I would have opined that R-Mart would be an ideal target this offseason. However, there is no one who can replace him now, and by all accounts, his untouchability is on par with Billz/Kemp/Kershaw. Thus, I'll throw it out there again. What about Takashi Saito? Is he going back to Japan? If we were to bring in Bobby Valentine, like many prognosticators have theorized, Takashi would probably be more amenable to playing another year or two, even given his age. Also, if Cappy is still with us next year, I remember he and Tomo Ohka would practice Japanese.
  14. Or we could have the next Carlos Gomez. No OBP, all average, but stellar defense at a premium position and speed to burn. My only fear is burning up his arby clock, but it has to be wound sometime.
  15. About as happy I would be for Brett Favre if he survives until the playoffs. I chose the historic team in the divorce, or as my friends force me to say, "I've decided to go with Ted." (An homage to my fave show, Curb) I guess, when it comes down to it, I would say my happiness for Jenkins will probably be comparable to the happiness Boston fans will feel for Manny as they watch him take on the Rays.
  16. I say we let Rickie protect Prince in the lineup next year. Rickie has always been misplayed as a leadoff hitter. Let him finally swing away in the five-hole. His numbers, outside of slugging, have always seemed Pat Burrell-like, and given the FACT that Prince Fielder will be on-base a lot, he should see a good diet of fastballs. As for giving up on him, I don't see how you can. His offense is very good for the position, and his tool box overflows. Much like our neighbors to the south, we're forced to watch something we hope will improve, despite what we logically know will not. But honestly...higher OBP than Braun. Better question, am I the only one who HAS given up on the Braun SB?
  17. Didn't we pick Grant Balfour up off the waiver wire from the Tigers? McNasty or Ball-Four....good use of the waiver wire.
  18. Aviles has a spot on most teams, though even I was surprised by the VORP and WS. Not sure if the Royals really are that weak or Aviles is that good. Either way, he isn't being traded.
  19. King Felix. Pujols. Wright. Sizemore. Longoria. Papelbon (and immediately convert him to starter). And maybe Kershaw or Hamilton.
  20. To be honest, they're not that far away from contention. If Alex Gordon and Billy Butler finally break through, they could easily challenge the Twinkies or the Pale Hose. And as mentioned earlier, Aviles will probably be moved in the offseason to second, opening up a very large hole at short. Now I would prefer a Hardy+ for Gordon or Greinke, but Hall would seem to fit the bill of what they want. They're in need of power, and Teahan would be a good target if we traded them Hall. When they originally traded for him from the A's (the great Beltran trade, which is the only trade I remember where a rental was subsequently traded), they thought he was a Gold Glove-quality defender at the hot corner.
  21. Or "take one for the team." Unfortunately, Prince and Big Rick are the only team players on the Brewers.
  22. I'm just hoping Corey comes back next year on a mission defensively (I still remember the misplayed ball at Miller Park in a preseason exhibition). He could be unreal defensively, robbing HR's and Texas leaguers, but instead, he's not so good. Honestly, I still think we trade JJ before Corey, as he is probably the most highly valued commodity we would trade (I seriously don't think Prince is out there). Player A: .290/.350/.450 ('06 numbers) best season line: .305/.405/.490 (this year) Player B: .275/.325/.485 (career numbers) best season line: .295/.355/.540 (last year) By the way, Player B also steals bases at almost twice the clip as Player A. 30 SB's in 1723AB's vs. 53 in 1412AB's. I would undoubtedly rather have Corey Hart over Nick Markakis.
  23. Perhaps it is wrong of me but I do have an expectation of low to mid 40's in his HR dept (with one being an obligatory inside-the-park jog). That's the type of deal that turns the Orioles into an AL East power (Wieters-Pacman Jones-Markakis....Fielder). You know Angelos would salivate, but you should be able to get a lot more for such a young slugger. I still say we sign him long term (as in a year or two past his FA date, but the devil probably won't sign off on it), because much of our ability to compete in the near future depends upon his presence in our lineup. If not for Corey Hart protecting Prince for most of the year, he would probably have the expected low 40's HR total. Instead, he began to expand the strike zone in an attempt to do too much. How did Braun do when he was protected by Corey? I seriously hope we don't trade him, but if we do, I seriously hope we get more than the remnants of last winter's trade efforts, both those hypothesized and realized, sans the meat (Pacman would look very nice in right, but still no deal).
  24. If we're going to move JJ to another position, perhaps we should move him to one he has played before. I nominate JJ Hardy be moved to the mound and become our closer for 2009.
  25. Bush is a perennial Breakout candidate to have a year like Chris Carpenter. His one wart, to me, is his home run rate, well, besides the fluctuation on his K/BB (which in his first year as a Brewer, was one of the best in the NL). As mentioned earlier, he is a lock to give you 190+ innings, 30 starts, and he is a bulldog on the mound. YoGa and Bush should form a good core for our future, and hopefully Parra and Jeffress provide the icing.
