  1. I'm watching on Gameday, so I can't judge what's going on, but Gagne' was used 4 days in a row, heated up yesterday and is out there today...I was defending Yost for putting him out there Sunday, but 6 days in a row is nuts.
  2. Let's give some credit where credit is due. In part, this team is winning games with better defense. Billy Hall has been outstanding at third and a big upgrade over Braun. Braun has held his own in left...that was a nice throw to the Hardy to allow him to cut down Dunn yesterday. Jason Kendall has been huge behind the plate in both handling pitchers and actully throwing out runners (haven't seen that in awhile). Guys like Fielder and Weeks keep getting better. I'm very impressed. The benefits could be long lasting. Not only saving runs along the way and winning games, but I felt at times our pitchers were having to get 2-3 extra outs a game last year. That can really wear out a bullpen...like happened to us last year. Who knows, if our D stays this good, we might be able to go down to 13 pitchers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. I thought Weeks was the team MVP of August/September last year. No way am I giving up on that guy after 3 weeks. It all comes down to plate discipline and OBP. When he took walks last year, he started seeing better piches and started hitting. I've noticed him striking out a few times on borderline strike threes too (great point Darnell & TLB) and had no problem with those at bats. I'm taking the over on the .375 OBP line...there will be plenty of runs scored off that number. How about some props for his glove too...he's looked much better out there.
  4. A lot of criticism of Yost seems to have carried over from 2007. While I would certainly agree he brought much of it on himself last year, I'm willing to give him more rope to start the year. As far as 4 days for Gagne', lesson learned. They communicated with Gagne', he thought he could go, his fastball wasn't the same and he coughed it up big. Last year he would have left him out there until the bitter end, at least he yanked him. Those homers came awfully quick and Encarnacion's was on a pitch well outside of the strike zone. The 2008 Yost may be more flexible than the past and not run him out there more than 2 days in a row anymore. I would like to see Turnbow get more of a shot too, but if he would have put him out there in Cincy and he'd have blown it...this board would have gone into Yosted-meltdown mode. I think Turnbow's problems stem more from oversue than anything. That's not an issue right now. Let's give some credit to Melvin/Yost for carrying 14 arms the other day in Cincy. With a heavy left handed lineup, keeping Stetter in there and giving Shouse some rest paid off. Stetter kept them in the ballgame and should have gotten the win. I reserve the right to change my mind, but so far I have no problems with what I've seen from Yost or Melvin. It's a long season...take a deep breath.
  5. I'd love to see them battle it out with the Orioles for worst team per $$$ in the majors...and that division. Any chance one of the Steinbrenners could buy the Cubs and run them into the ground???
  6. Maybe later in the week when TGJ is ready to come back, they'll know if Sheets can go versus the Cubs or he's a retroactive DL. They'll also have a better picture from Parra or Bush if they deserve the fifth starter spot. I guess we're a week away from Cameron too. Interesting week coming up. Sheets reminds me of Molitor. We need him so bad to win, but it's all these nagging injuries he just can't shake. Of course as soon as he goes somewhere else, he'll win a Cy Young. Sure can't fault his effort...the guy is a gamer.
  7. How 'bout a couple more and we can save Gagne'
  8. I think they might have sent Stetter back down, but they needed the extra lefty against the Reds. It's nice to see they are very wary of burning out the bullpen early which hurt them last year. They'll wait and see what's up with Sheets, then send a pitcher down for TGJ mid-week.
  9. Thanks for the weblink joe!!! That's really helpful. I can now resume my praying for Ben.
  10. How about Sixto's game winning Opening Day Grand Slam in 1980. He also hit one in 1978...the Brewers first season with a winning record and the beginning of the franchise's 1978-1983 Glory Years. Wasn't there also a Grand Slam that got called back a year or two before...maybe Don Money? That might be the biggest one that didn't happen. I'd still give it to Rob Deer (don't forget his that day) and Sveum, although if we rattle off 13 straight and then win the World Series, I reserve the right to change my vote to Prince!!!
  11. One other thing joepepsi...While they show both feeds on the MLB channels, they don't tell you which feed it is on the guide. They don't tend to change the timing on the games on the MLB channels, they are at 6 hours which makes it easier to record. So I wind up recording the games on FSN-WI that don't have the up to date guide info...that screws up my recording. I wish they gave which feed it is on the MLB channels.
  12. Out in LA, we only get the FSN-WI feed when there is a Brewer or Bucks game. You also need to have the Extra Innings or NBA package to get them. It's a drag because we don't get the replays and we never got the "Brewers Classics". They also cut off much of the extended Brewer programming like "In their own words". FSN-North is always on as are most of the other FSNs. What I usually do is DVR the games. A big beef I have is if they don't keep the guide updated or they change it, it sometimes doesn't record. For example, on Monday, FSN-WI may show the Wednesday Cardinal game from 5-11 our time with no pregame or any HD feed. If I don't check it Wednesday, they may change it to 5-8 with an HD feed and it won't record. That gets to me because I can't start watching until the kid's go to bed and the game is usually over so I need the DVR version. The new DirecTV DVR is horrendous, but that's a whole different thread. They have launched their new satelllites, which has led to two main benefits - more games in HD and dual broadcasts of the games by both team's networks. Last year they had limited capacity so they'd only have one teams feed. It's brutal having to watch a Brewers game with the Cubs announcers...so that's a big deal. Yesterday they had the Cardinals version in both SD and HD, and the Brewers version in HD only. Needless to say, the Brewers announcers were a little more animated during Prince's homer!!!
  13. He was an NL ump and never did any games until the Crew switched to the NL. Just from watching the strike zones it sure seems like a couple umps out there have it in for the Brewers. These guys have huge egos and Ned's meltdown (although somewhat justified IMO) last year seems to have carried over with Layne and Cuzzi (correct me if I am wrong on those 2 umps).
  14. MLB has got to work on this. If we're willing to pay that much dough to watch the games through MLB.tv or Extra Innings, they should make it available.
  15. Is there an additional blackout this season on Saturdays? I have Extra Innings and couldn't get the Brewer game last Saturday. I think it was because it was on the same time as the Fox game locally. I could care less about the Dodgers or Angels...give me my Brew Crew!!!
  16. They were the best team in the division last year after the break...and they are improved from last year. I've been fairly dismissive of them, but I'd have to admit it's probably a close three team race between the Crew, Reds and Cubs. The Reds starting pitching is improved...Cueto was impressive. They may have caught up to the other two teams. Coco is the best closer among the three. I like our depth more. I'd still give the nod to Marmol as the best reliever in the division. The lineups are somewhat similar. All pound the ball in the middle and can put up big crooked numbers. They can also lack plate discipline and are streaky. Should be an interesting year.
  17. Gameday back up...thanks for the updates!!!
  18. The booing is so bad...it's really a bad mark for Brewers fans. The first ball Turnbow threw, the fans started getting on him. Give it a rest already. You hear that stuff and then wonder why a player doesn't want to sign for a little less to stay in Milwaukee? So he can get booed by some drunk who hasn't been to a game in 20 years? Brutal.
  19. Maybe Braun, Gross and Hart should stick around for Davey's post-game demo.
  20. Nice to see McClung added some movement to his fastball...NOT.
  21. LaRoche!!! Wear that Cub bullpen out early!!!
  22. Not trying to say the pitching was that great tonight, but our outfield D cost us 5 runs. Hart's 2-run error, Braun allows Philips to take second and he eventually scores and Gross' Canseco-esque play on Dunn's "homer". Bush was indeed sub-par with the walks, but the D did him no favors...and will the fans cut Turnbow some slack. He pitched pretty well last year until Ned burned him out.
  23. Depth will become critical as the year goes on. I'd probably send TGJ down to stay fresh, knowing we'll need him at some point this year. We're pretty deep in the OF. Maybe Gwynn, Gross & Dillon take turns to make sure they are all getting enough ABs...depending on their option situation. The pitching issue is tougher. McClung is the odd man out with Bush the likely long man, but do they keep Parra fresh by sending him down until June? Maybe they can get some decent starts out of Bush for a while and keep Parra at AAA with a 80-90 pitch count. Evenutally they get an injury or Parra is just too good to keep down. Then again, maybe that's a luxury they don't have and they need to put their best 5 starters out there...Sheets, YoGo, Soup, Villy & Parra. Bush would be a very solid long man/spot starter. Until McClung demonstrates some movement on his pitches, he becomes very hittable after that fastball slows down.
