  1. Great day out at the ballpark! Reserved crowd today given the Dodgers are only chasing records and Yu looked rusty from the start. We caught them on a good weekend for sure. As much I love the 2/3...the Brewers aren't in the same zip code when the Dodgers are at full strength. Saw plenty of Brewers fans, but not as many as a couple years ago...not sure which night the UW alumni were out there, but that's usually the big draw. I did have a brat at the game. Appreciate the effort Dodgers...even with the brown mustard. Just needs some Kraut. Also...what's up with the white bread bun? sigh... The Brewers top three pitchers look fantastic. Big Sweat was awesome today. Between Swarczak, Hader and Knebel they just need a solid 6. That will keep them in plenty of games, but those bats will need to get going. If Braun can heat up, they have a shot. Back to you Milwaukee, the West Coast is out...
  2. Going to be an interesting couple of weeks. If they can somehow muddle through this trip and hang within a few of the Cubs, they'll have a legit shot to pull out a shocker in September. My brain says 3-6 road trip...my heart says 6-3.
  3. I will never understand why we have a thread like this every year. The guy is funny, knowledgeable and entertaining. If you spend 3 hours a night for 162 days (or however many days he does), you are bound to find flaws in anyone. I love the guy. Having Matt LePay as a fill in is an absolute blessing. We are so lucky to have them...not to mention Uecker on the radio side for all these years. These guys are all top decile announcers.
  4. I remember waiting outside some shoe store in a long line to get Robin Yount's autograph. It was so crowded it was like the Beatles were there. They said he'd only be there 2 hours and there was no way I was going to make it. One of the security guys was from my HS...the only reason I knew him was he used to pick on me all the time. He sees me and snuck me up to a point in the line where I made it. I still have that SI Cover with Yount's autograph up in my study. I never saw that guy again, but I always think of that moment. I think it was his way of apologizing...apology most definitely accepted.
  5. A coach, but how about... Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish
  6. Ruining a chance at pleasure for Cubs fans...the little things that can get Brewers fans through the rebuild!
  7. I love Carlos. I'd love to see him back, but that's the heart talking not the brain. Broxton needs to play every day. I am all for picking up guys like this to see if they can be turned into useful chips. A Gomez would have more potential than a Niewenhuis. I'd just do it at a different position at this point.
  8. If they are truly doing it for development reasons and not PR, it's fine. Maybe getting him up with the club will help. CS is such a crap place to play.
  9. Not sure why the Braves would trade for him when he won't sign with them after next season. They won't be any good during that time. Luc wants to play for a winner.
  10. Love this. Brian is fantastic. Milwaukee is lucky to have him. Had a chance to spend some time with him a few years back and he is a really good guy. All for this. Glad to see the Brewers are cool with him doing national games. Too bad they weren't as good about that back in the day with Merle Harmon.
  11. The way they have it set up with Uecker just doesn't fit with Block. Block by himself is fairly dull. It was an ear-opener for me when he teamed with Hamilton. I thought they were both outstanding. Block is better with a partner that he can feed the ball too. Good move for all involved.
  12. He's selling them short...not just the best for a year, probably top 5 career all time.
  13. It's not over yet. Pena still can be a part of the pen. 2016 will be crucial for Segura's value. He starts out ok, it could enhance his trade value for when he's moved. Not great so far, but not over yet.
  14. You can't understand that people may not like that the Brewers may have just turned a proven, reasonably priced, major leaguer into three guys that are unlikely to amount to anything? I think it's possible to agree with Stearns' overall plan, and question individual decisions. Now, none of us know what else was on the table, but the Brewers farm system has come far enough that you can make an argument that lower risk quality might be more important than higher risk quantity at this stage. Especially since the Mariners farm system isn't exactly swimming in talent. And the money available would have been the same in either case. I just don't see that being the case. They have a vastly improved system, but this isn't the Royals before their run or the Cubs a couple years ago. The Brewers won't have the luxury the Cubs have in piling on with FAs. They need to continue to stockpile talent at all levels of the system.
  15. Can't understand why anyone wouldn't like this trade. Stearns shopped him around, got 3 long term call options and continues to build depth at all levels in the system. These guys are teenagers...who knows what they'll turn into. All we have with Lind is a guy who could take a 65 win team and turn them into a 68 win team. Just keep accumulating talent David.
  16. From a friend of mine from another system who has scouted some of the Mariners system...3 of their better young pitchers. Herrera and Missaki the better of the 3. Peralta has good arm and needs a breaking ball. Missaki already had TJ, could be best of the lot. Their group had looked at all 3.
  17. Is there a mechanism to increase the luxury tax as revenues go higher? I'm not familiar with how it's structured. Less PEDs have helped the competitive balance with the productive window post-control shrinking. If I'm the Brewers I keep pressing for stricter drug testing.
  18. Absolutely, it's about the difference in revenues between teams. Revenue sharing and competitive balance items will ebb and flow over time between the owners. Baseball isn't that much different from other similar "people" oriented service companies as far as their cost structure. Salaries and related are usually within a range around 60% of revenues. If a team wants to win and put butts in the seats, it takes people like Zack Greinke. If a company wants to win, it takes the salesman that has all the relationships or the engineer who invents the product.
  19. They must think Javi B is worth something...the other option would be wait until the deadline and hope K Rod hasn't imploded. Cost a little extra money, but if they thought they could have gotten a better prospect it could have made sense. They know more than I do so good for them.
  20. I'm not going to lie. Part of me wants to edit the Javier out of the subject line and watch the sitewide freakout. No doubt...I'm telling myself we got Javier PBTBNL rather than he who shall not be named...not sure I could handle that name on the team again. I'm still suffering from post traumatic Yuni disorder.
  21. Great point...Familia winds up with the blown save record when arguably only one is solely on him. Collins put him in a tough spot and his infield defense did no favors behind him in the series. Watching Collins make the move with Harvey last night is exactly why the stat heads are taking over the sport. A slightly above average reliever is probably a better bet than a stud starter who has already thrown 100+ pitches over 8 innings...and they had an exceptional reliever with a 2 run lead. That being said, knowing my own personality I'd have done the same thing...which is one of many reasons I'm unqualified for that job.
  22. Love the small market win. Neutral on Ned...good for him though. Really happy for a guy like Sveum...maybe he gets a better shot now. I always liked Cain too. Heck, if KC can do it...why can't the Brewers! A team with no weak spots, but no superstars. Much like the Giants, it seems like the trend. Love the fact that St. Louis is the second best team in Missouri with a former Brewers catcher as their manager...even after 100 wins.
  23. Estrada's xFIP was the third worst in MLB of qualified pitchers...4.93. He was higher than his last year with the Brewers at 4.19. Maybe he just had a bigger park, better fielding and some luck this year versus last which helped his ERA. Either way I'm fine with it. The Brewers needed to clear room for prospects and weren't going anywhere. They weren't going anywhere with him. Lind was effective and can be moved at the deadline. Win/win.
  24. Montreal just isn't the city it was compared to the rest of Canada in the 60s/70s. The economic power shifted to Toronto, Vancouver and with the resource boom, Alberta...although that may be fading. It has the population and a core that remember baseball, but I'm not sure anything has changed to the vibrancy of the city to make it able to accommodate a major league baseball team.
