  1. He isn't worth 2.8M but he is better than a joker like Hawkins who will probably get the same silly amount with extra injury risk.
  2. I could care less if he used or not and I think it is completely plausible that he did use. I don't think going off of steroids would significantly impact his bottom line stat wise, steroids just aren't all that huge of a performance boost, juiced balls had more to do with the big offensive spike than steroids ever did. To me though it seems much more likely that he was clean for most of his career and used when playoff time came to stay in the lineup than anything else though.
  3. Latos will fail in Cincy imo, great deal for the padres, bad one for the reds.
  4. This makes sense, hedges towards Braun missing time and towards Gamel stinking at 1B since you can move Hart there since he is so terrible in the field now.
  5. This team is going to live or die by pitching and they can limp by for 50 games without Braun and stay in contention and then they just need to get hot at the right time. I still think they need to build the team assuming playoffs are a possibility regardless of what happens with Braun. The Cardinals showed yet again that just staying in the hunt until the last month is all you need, get hot at the right time and it doesn't matter if you played mediocre ball for a big chunk of the season.
  6. With the injury history this is one of those contracts that could look like a huge bargain or a colossal blunder just depending on health.
  7. I might have traded K-Rod for Lowrie just because of the service years and money but for actual value ignoring the money and years of contract I wouldn't have.
  8. If he is healthy enough and productive enough to reach the 525 PA then the vesting option is no big deal.
  9. Sure and given the sample of every single game played in a single major league season it is probably pretty accurate. Given a 162 game sample it is wildly inaccurate. Just because I think the stat isn't very useful doesn't mean I don't understand it. 162 games is nowhere near a large enough sample for Pythagorean records to be very useful. If every season was 2430 games for every team then your 95.8% statistic would actually mean something, since they only play 162 games each it isn't anywhere close to accurate.
  10. Yeah that is a bit higher than I expected but nothing terrible. He is as good or better than the other mediocre MI that have signed this year and most of them got more than I expected.
  11. Unfortunately, I think this is probably what happened. Occam's Razor and all. I hope not. To me if he is guilty the most likely explanation is his body was acting up and he used them so he could play through the playoffs and just hope he didn't get tested.
  12. I don't really remember very many teams winning with speed in recent years. Pitching and Defense are always great assets though.
  13. Only if every position were the exact same. We gave up more value than we got imo but we filled a need and gave up something we didn't need so it makes sense. My guess is when you look at the WAR of the two players after the season that McGehee's will be higher but if he were on the Brewers he'd be riding the bench while Veras is going to get full time play in our bullpen.
  14. ????? When talking straight up value for value we probably gave up more than we got but it makes sense trading something we didn't need for something we did. Not sure what the confusion is? KRod at his contract is a bad deal but he is going to help the team quite a bit if he stays as another example.
  15. Pythagorean record is computed after the fact, based on runs scored and runs allowed over the course of the season. It still isn't a very accurate metric. One blow out win or loss against the junk part of a bullpen can swing it wildly. One bad series in coors can throw it way out of whack etc. It might be a little better than straight up wins and losses but it isn't all that much better.
  16. I would guess McGehee bounces back to slightly below his 08/09 stat line offensively and his defense is probably closer to average than the below average we saw with the knee problems those seasons. This is probably a bad deal but it is one that makes sense and probably helps the team. If it allows us to trade KRod I like it a lot more but if we do trade him we need bullpen help because our bullpen isn't very good with him gone.
  17. This is a good thing, it is team friendly to defer money, not player friendly. The Ramirez deal is extremely reasonable all around so other than not liking him as an ex Cub or not liking that it was 3 years there is very little to complain about.
  18. There is no reason to think this was an 80 win team before this signing, Fielder just wasn't THAT valuable. Even if last years team was really more of a 90 win team that over produced Fielder doesn't drop us below .500. As constructed if Braun doesn't get suspended this team is almost as good as last years right now. The bullpen is just as good, the rotation is the same, the minor league players are all a year closer and we have mostly offset the loss of Fielder at this point assuming whatever 1B we throw out there can produce at a positive WAR. The biggest worry for me right now is backup at the IF positions since we have 3 injury concerns and I don't think we have major league quality options at 2B, SS or 3B in the minors (sorry not a Green guy).
  19. If he is kept away from high leverage PA against LH hitters he is one of the better RP in baseball. If used poorly he has very little value. Just depends on how he is used.
  20. Fielder is worse than Ramirez defensively and Betancourt is for sure too. Gamel most likely is as well. McGehee is actually underrated defensively on this board so he is better than Aramis and Gonzalez obviously is as the only good defensive player in the bunch.
  21. If it is 3/34 it is a good deal. His defense is below average but nowhere near as bad as people seem to think it is. Green to me has always screamed backup so I won't lose any sleep over him not playing, you can't start the year with Gamel at 1B and Green at 3B and not completely be rolling the dice so we had to sign a real 3B or 1B or hope McGehee gets his swing back.
  22. I'd like to bring Saito back assuming he is looking for a 1 year deal. Way too much injury risk for a 2 year deal. As for Fielder, I fully expect him to be in the AL East next season.
  23. There is a good reason to think there was a chance he could get a multi year elsewhere. There is not a good reason to expect it though. Melvin had to know there was a good chance he was staying when he offered arbitration, it certainly wasn't close to a forgone conclusion that he would sign elsewhere.
  24. No way. If he thought K-Rod would accept, he'd have never offered. There is no reason to think he would not accept for that money so I strongly disagree. Whether I think the move is smart or not is something else but there is no reason to think it was likely he would turn it down.
  25. I don't believe the abnormal GB/FB rate is for real and the rest of his stats are at replacement level. He won't repeat the fluky HR/FB which saved him.
