  1. Yeah Parra wasn't a bad pick, most of the picks are just horrible though.
  2. I watched the ESPN baseball tonight gold glove awards and just got mad as I don't think a single good fielder won an award outside of C as far as I could tell.
  3. If they gave out a gold glove specifically for LF I might see the case, but since it is generally just an OF thing it is horrible that he is in the running.
  4. If you think the field is equal in the NFL you are just not paying attention. Top end FA will sign team friendly contracts to join winning teams or some large market teams, in baseball top end FA get overpaid to join large market teams. The Yankees have to overpay per WAR to get their players, sure they get to pick the guys they want but their wins per $ are inherently lower than other teams. In the NFL top end teams underpay to keep/sign the stars so their win per $ is inherently higher than other teams. Baseball has some work to do in general but a salary cap wouldn't fix things and salary caps in general are pretty flawed. The largest reason for parity in football is that injuries can destroy a team so easily and they play an unbalanced and more importantly short schedule so a couple of bad games can take you out of the playoffs. The same teams are good year in and year out in the NFL and have been ever since the salary cap was in place. It is just easy for new teams to sneak into the playoffs for a year because of how the league works, not really the cap itself. This is really no different than in any other sport. Same with basketball and hockey which have caps, you can set your watch by half of the playoff teams being the same every year.
  5. Typical Yankees and the reason why they don't win the world series every year even with that payroll. NFL teams underpay top FA when they are great teams, MLB teams get raked over the coals to sign top FAs.
  6. You can sort of hide SLG in the lineup, a low OBP hurts you everywhere.
  7. Salary cap is a bandaid fix anyway and one that doesn't make much sense given how baseball is set up . Baseball could probably use a salary floor and it could still use better revenue sharing especially from media income.
  8. His peak for hitting would look to be 2003-2009, those were his age 23-29 years. That is pretty much what I'd consider standard for star players. If he were 3 years older or something that would look very odd for a player of his caliber.
  9. Pujols is a bit different case than most of those players though. He did come over to the states at 16 years of age and his career path fits the age he is supposed to be pretty much. I don't see a major reason to question his age like some of the other players that get questioned.
  10. Yeah I think Fielder watches them a lot more than Braun does. Pujols is probably the worst in baseball when it comes to it though and yes in the playoffs he was watching one that didn't go out and maybe would have been a double if he had just been running, that is completely unacceptable.
  11. The Cardinals just don't bug me, don't know why. They generally play the game the right way, La Russa is one of the better managers out there even though he is a boob. I originally said I was cheering for the Cardinals but on second thought I hope the Rangers win but this series has been so amazing I really don't care who wins, it was one of the better post season series I've seen in quite some time.
  12. This has been one of the best world series I've ever seen and I've watched most of them in the past 20 years, too bad nobody is watching it.
  13. We most likely do have the money to sign Fielder, it just would leave too many other holes so I can't see a deal making any sense and don't think it will happen. Both sides are most likely correct.
  14. I still stand by my other post in that linked thread. "I don't think we should overpay to get Lackey though. Pitchers are healthy until they are not and then they don't usually recover very well from it. It is pretty rare to see a pitcher who goes 200+ IP a season who gets hurt for 2 years and then stays healthy a big chunk of their career. " Once a pitcher is damaged goods you just can't give them a big contract until they have proven themselves healthy for multiple seasons and even then you have to hedge a little bit. Carpenter is the rare exception and I bet Wainwright is too since everything always ends up bouncing the Cardinals way.
  15. Not a surprise. They usually hand these awards to the team that overproduced the most. Won't surprise me if that team is under .500 next year.
  16. Oh yeah, I never meant to say the zone is why the Brewers lost, just why the games were so high scoring.
  17. They may be pitching better but this is completely wrong. If you watched the game they seriously were consistently calling pitches outside the strike zone as strikes and in the Brewers series they consistently were calling strikes balls. The umps play a huge role in how good a pitcher pitches in a single game. Velocity always helps of course because if the ump is making you come deeper into the zone velocity is what is going to save you.
  18. Watching the final 3 innings and I can only reiterate, the strike zone was a complete joke, there is a reason that the Brewers series was so high scoring and tonight's game was so low scoring and it really had nothing to do with the players.
  19. To be fair Holland tonight is getting pitches 2 inches inside called a strike. The entire Brewers series pitches on the inside corners were called balls consistently. When the ump won't give you the inside corner it is really hard to pitch there. If we had this strike zone our games would be low scoring too.
  20. They hammered through a lot of the details during spring training this year. http://sports.mobile.msn....=2&afid=49&pg1=1 Everything I've read about it suggests there aren't really any worries about not getting it done, just working through the details still.
  21. And, yet, he magically finished the year above replacement level. He was bad...but let's not continue the tired over exaggeration of his badness either. Replacement level players are part time players and backups. Yuni had a good year for him and was still the worst full time SS in baseball, this is what people have always been saying and at no point has it been exaggeration. No other team gave a full season of playtime to a SS as bad as Yuni, the closest was the Indians giving the corpse of Orlando Cabrera full time AB for so long. Yuni was the worst regular SS in baseball this year and has been by far the worst full time SS over the past 4 seasons, at some point very very soon he is going to become a utility man and not a starter.
  22. Not a big fan of Carroll but he would be a big upgrade over Betancourt so for the right price I'm fine with it. Pretty much anyone is an upgrade at SS.
  23. Sure but Betancourt is a career low OBP guy. I have no idea what to expect out of McGehee next year, I would think if he starts it is on a short leash at least. Counsell is pretty much gone imo.
  24. The Brewers have plenty of power without Fielder, what they have to find a way to replace is the OBP. That is the strength he brings to the club more than anything else and yes it is partially due to the power that he carries the OBP. We were 10th in baseball in OBP even with Fielder. The top 5 teams in OBP all won a lot of games and that is true pretty much every year. If you take Fielder out of the equation this is a very low OBP team. The first step is getting rid of Betancourt, you just can't keep trotting out players who get out over 70% of the time. Minimizing Gomez's playtime will help as well, love his defense but the offense is just an absolute killer once Fielder is gone.
  25. They had the 6th best bullpen in baseball by ERA and WAR and the 3rd best by xFIP. It probably isn't that likely that they can repeat that. It might not fall off all that far but they'll probably lose at least 1 WAR from the bullpen.
