  1. I'm not even close to comfortable with Hawkins, he is all strand rate which won't hold up. His xFIP is 3.90 and with that K rate it is obvious he isn't really fooling anyone out there. I have much more faith in Loe than Hawkins, a small sample of ERA is not a good way to measure things. There isn't a single pitcher in our bullpen that I'm fully comfortable with though, Axford would be the closest thing to one but even he scares me sometimes.
  2. Jeter gets a little more just because the media is more prevalent than ever in general, but it has always been a big hooplah no matter who is approaching 3000.
  3. "A clock on my chest proves I don't fess" -Flava Flav, 1988 As for Flav in general, if Chuck D liked him, that's good enough for me. He was a pretty talented rapper back in the day and that is coming from someone who thinks most rappers have no talent at all. Chuck D was certainly the star of the band though.
  4. Probably not, but you are the minority. I really think they will make every effort to sign Greinke or Marcum since the minor league pitching is so far away still.
  5. So true about the lack of pressure. When the stats guys say there is no thing as a clutch hitter they should use Nyjer Morgan and this June 8th game as an example. The bottom of the 8th down by 2 with runners on is a clutch situation. Even if this were to prove anything it wouldn't be that somehow players have it easier when not in clutch situations.
  6. It's not really fair just to look at this season for Prince though, is it? Since 2007, he's 24th in the majors in WAR. Since 2008, he's 28th.Complete semantics though. If you wanted to be literal RIGHT NOW would mean what they did today and not even what they did this year. If you want to know who the best players are right now you would use more than just this years stats.
  7. Hawkins isn't really any better than Loe at this point though, he just haven't given up a lot of runs yet. None of our bullpen guys really inspire confidence other than Axford when he has his command. Saito, Braddock and Parra being hurt really messed up what was going to be an ok bullpen. Loe certainly shouldn't be facing good LH in important situations though.
  8. That team has been just riddled with injuries over the past 10 years or so too. Every good player they have seems to get hurt.
  9. Going to the World Series almost always jumps attendance the next year as well. Both the Giants and Rangers are among the leaders for most increased fans per game on the year.
  10. So much of the on field stuff involves things we don't know about and so much of the after game interviews involves manager speak that I don't worry too much about those things. The players really seem to play hard for him and they walked through the game like zombies for Macha so I give him a thumbs up for that. Some of his in game management confuses me but it isn't as jaw dropping bad as some of the things Yost did.
  11. In April he was hitting the ball hard right at guys and it seemed to just be bad luck more than anything, since then he seems to just be making poor contact all around.
  12. I think a lot of people assumed when we said Betancourt would stink defensively it meant he'd be leading the leagues in errors. What was meant was he has about the worst range you can have at short to go along with pretty mediocre errors and mediocre decision making and a mediocre arm. Not that it is terribly accurate but coolstandings.com has us up to a 46.5% chance to make the playoffs now which is always nice.
  13. 2010 - 52 (5 teams had 70+) 2009 - 55 (1 team had 70) 2008 - 59 (3 teams had 70+) 2007 - 60 (3 teams had 70+) Before that we never hit 60 for a bunch of years. Just for fun I looked at 1982 and we led the league with 76 that year.
  14. To give an example. Carl Crawford had a .520 OPS through 44 games. Since then he has a 1.153 OPS in the past 12 games not including his absolutely huge day today. Baseball is so darn streaky that you just can't obsess over 1/3 of a season much less 4 or 5 bad weeks. Pujols is another example, everyone was whining about how he was having a horrible year and he has a good 5 day stretch and suddenly he is right on pace for his normal year. Baseball is way too streaky to be crying about what a player does in a month. It wouldn't be a complete shock if McGehee just stunk all year, I'm not saying he is above question or anything. It also wouldn't surprise me if 7 days from now he was on pace for his career numbers, all it takes is one one hot week to offset 2 months of struggling. Baseball is the last game you want to obsess about a few bad months.
  15. This isn't unique at all. In Basketball every player is expected to do everything. The pitcher hitting makes no sense at all except "that is how the game has always been played". It is like saying the Goalie in hockey has to play offense or the Punter in football has to play on offense. Pitchers just do not get the exposure to hitting that is required to stay major league quality. When the absolute best pitchers in baseball can't out hit a replacement level hitter it pretty much sums up why they shouldn't be hitting.
  16. I think you are reading things into my post that aren't there. I'm not saying because he has been cold he must get hot, I'm saying that at some point over the next 3+ months most likely he'll get hot and people will stop obsessing over his stats so much. Before the season started I would have probably guessed he had 2-3 cold months, 2-3 hot months and 2-3 mediocre months with no real way to know which of each he'd end up with. Him starting the year with a couple cold months isn't really a good reason to change your opinion of him and he almost certainly will get hot at some point. From a scouting standpoint he was absolutely fine in April, he was hitting the ball with authority but was the guy who always seemed to hit right at someone. In May he has been pretty terrible. It just isn't the kind of sample that you worry about imo and it is the same exact thread that we see every single time a Brewer has a bad couple months.
  17. This is what McGehee is like when he is cold, he had spells like this each of his seasons. At some point he'll most likely get hot and it will even out. This is baseball, not sure why this discussion has to come up every single time a player struggles. Moving him down in the lineup is fine of course but bringing up a marginal at best prospect to replace him is just jumping the gun.
  18. The problem with this for the brewers, is that it will be hard for them to make any move with the cupboards pretty bare. The cupboards aren't really that bare, they are just young. Plenty of players in the system that teams would want. Maybe not a Sabathia type deal but most of the trade deadline moves are much more mediocre and we have the guys to get those kind of deals done.
  19. I will say this, winning an MVP or going to a world series has absolutely nothing at all to do with if Braun is the best Brewer ever or not. Winning an MVP wouldnt' make me think Braun is a better player, that is the same kind of thing that leads to people miss-ranking QB's so badly because they seem to think Super Bowls are an individual achievement.
  20. He isn't as terrible against LHP either so a utlility role fits from that standpoint.
  21. If he were LH I'd want to grab him instantly, but Yuni already hits lefties pretty well and that is all Hall is worth anything at all for.
  22. Some team desperate for a veteran MI. He would be better at 2B than SS where his defense plays less of an impact role and in general 2B is even weaker than SS offensively.
  23. If you want to blame anyone for the current state of the roster a huge portion of that blame goes to Z being unable to draft pitching, he still gets way too much credit for drafting the almost can't miss hitters he did and doesn't seem to get any of the blame for almost completely missing out all of his pitching drafts. The majority of the moves I've disliked by Melvin are in direct correlation from the complete lack of major league quality pitching drafted under Jack Z. Now I don't say this just to harp on Jack Z, rebuilding a franchise takes 10-15 years and we are still in rebuilding mode. What we do with this wave of talent and how we draft over the next few years is still a huge part of it. When you have to rebuild an entire major league team it takes time and to do it in a way that leaves you with a minor league system still takes every more. The Rays took 10+ years to do and look where they are, we rushed all of our prospects too much and we are most likely hitting a 2-3 year window where we have to pay for that in the near future.
  24. 36-38 starts used to be common in baseball but as the players get better and the pitchers get diluted from expansion it isn't really realistic to go without the 5th established starter anymore.
  25. For most rotations every 5 days makes sense, for a team who has a bunch of guys coming off of injuries or who haven't gone a full season the 5 man rotation makes sense. Now that Greinke is back the 5 days starts to make a little more sense again but when he was injured the 5 pitcher rotation was certainly much better imo.
