  1. I was never a big Lawrie fan to begin with so I don't really care one way or the other how he does. I like the Blue Jays somewhat so I hope they do well in general, same with the guys we traded to the Indians.
  2. My concern with the situation had nothing to do with righty/lefty match ups. RR continually counts on Loe to be his lights-out guy in the bullpen, and he's just not that kind guy. He's solid, but why not go to Hawkins, who really has been lights out, in that situation? We don't have a lights out option in the bullpen though. Hawkins is nowhere near a lights out bullpen option and the only reason his ERA isn't 4+ so far on the year is a lucky strand rate, he isn't fooling anyone out there with his 4 K per 9 IP. Axford might be our only above average bullpen arm to be honest. Saito's injury has really hurt as has the fact we lost all of our lefties. If we are in the hunt near the trade deadline I have to imagine we look for bullpen help.
  3. I still think Betancourt moves to 2B to hide his defense some next season, though obviously not for the Brewers. It is that or he moves to a utility infielder role, I just can't imagine a team giving him a full time job at SS.
  4. Yeah I was wondering what that was, looked like Prince was goofing around with a fan and not upset or anything and the ump said something to him and he shook his head in disbelief that the ump said anything.
  5. Not to mention Aramis Ramirez has been so terrible in the first half. I'd expect the average 3B to be better in the 2nd half overall. As for McGehee his June/July last year was about the same as what he is doing this year. His entire career thus far has been either hot or cold month to month. OPS by month .500 .624 1.100 .823 .718 .907 ____ .946 .824 .657 .716 .935 .744 ____ .739 .593 He hasn't shown any consistency at all and there isn't any reason to think a repeat of May is more likely than a .900 OPS month in June. You just have to keep playing him and hope the good outweighs the bad. This is true of all of these types of player who are 20ish HR types with very average BB rates, their results are going to be all over the place.
  6. Both Weeks and Espinosa are probably more deserving than Phillips but he'll almost certainly make the team. Thankfully Storen has been so good that I think he'll make the team and we won't be stuck in a situation where Espinosa gets picked over Weeks just to have a Nat.
  7. His K% and BB% are steady, almost all of the problem seems to be he is grounding out a lot more than normal. The majority of the time that kind of thing happens it is just a cold streak. I don't even begin to worry about a guy until the all star break and then it is only if he has looked terrible all year long without any good stretches. I cannot overstate how streaky baseball is as a game, you just can't be looking to dump players every time they have a couple of bad months. This is pretty much what cold McGehee looks like, hot McGehee is an .850-.950 OPS player, he'll show up for a month or two at some point most likely.
  8. They can't prove anything isn't a fluke over 81 games much less like 25 games or whatever it is. Home/Road splits just vary way too wildly to read too much into them. I expect us to win 2 games, we are playing teams that might be better than us on the road (where all teams expect to lose more than they win). Has very little to do with how this years team has done in a meaningless sample of games though.
  9. 16-11 so far, I'm already out of the running for this thankfully!
  10. I'll go with 13-14.
  11. I wonder if that is the first time the Brewers ever won a game on an inside the park HR, sac fly and suicide squeeze being the only offense.
  12. Not a huge fan of the play they call but fun to see when it works, heh.
  13. Betancourt gets some of the worst jumps on balls of any SS I've ever seen and he moves like he has bricks in his pants. Counsell's range isn't a big positive or anything, it is just better than Betancourt's
  14. Average at fielding but his range is about as good as Betancourt's range is.No average overall, Counsell's range is fine his throwing arm is a wet noodle at this point though. Counsell is a very clear upgrade defensively over Betancourt at SS, in the order of a win or so over a full season most likely.
  15. Counsell is still an average defensive SS, saying he isn't better than Betancourt is absurd in my mind.
  16. And yet even hitting like he is Id rather see him vs a RHP than Betancourt.
  17. That is a play most SS make too so the defense really derailed the game.
  18. What lineup should he have vs a LHP with Hart out? Seems like the only change that would make any sense is Betancourt 2nd instead of Gomez but that doesn't seem like a huge improvement. Kotsay isn't an improvement vs a LHP, Wilson likely lisn't, Counsell certainly isn't. If we have a problem with today's lineup it is a flawed roster.
  19. Hart is sick, Gomez is probably the best #2 guy in that lineup and Lucroy does have to sit sometimes as a C. There is nothing wrong with today's lineup. I give him a C overall. He does things I disagree but I usually at least have a little bit of an understanding of where it comes from(unlike Yost who routinely put in the worst player for the job on the entire roster in a big situation) and he does seem willing to change when it becomes really obvious that one is needed. He moved Lucroy up when he started hitting for power, he didn't when he just had an insanely high BABIP. He moved Gomez down when we had a clear upgrade at #2 though he took long to do it. He started playing Morgan over Kotsay vs RHP etc. He needs to curb the baserunning with our bad baserunners like Fielder, McGehee and Gomez but I like the improved aggression from Braun, Weeks, Hart etc. The players really seem to like playing for him, nobody barked out during the big losing streak and it never seemed like anyone has given up on a game on the season.
  20. Difference is Estrada kept getting hurt and Kendall stayed healthy but just stunk. Kendall was also scrappy and Estrada didn't look like he really wanted to play half the time.
  21. He certainly has his flaws, but for a first year manager I can look past them for now. I like the aggression on the bases as a philosophy but some of our players certainly haven't learned the right time to do it yet. I like him more than Macha or Yost to this point that really isn't high praise in any way as they are two really terrible managers.
  22. No he wasn't blocking the plate, there was a clear path to the plate and the runner easily could have slid and not touched Posey. His shoulder may have been on the front side of the basepath but that is very different than blocking the plate. If they made a rule where the C can't block the plate and the runner can't go out of his way to hit the C, Posey would not have broken the rule and the runner would have. There isn't a rule like that so it was all clean but Posey really was not going out of his way to block the plate.
  23. There are certainly situations where those run charts don't work very well though. Gomez on 1st with Braun up to bat facing Jeff Suppan is a very different run chart than Fielder at 1st with Betancourt up to bat facing Tim Hudson (about a 99% chance for a K or double play here!).
  24. He blocked the minimum amount of the plate he possibly can and still apply a tag if the runner goes out of the baseline and slides while touching the plate with his hand. Posey really couldn't have done anything differently on that play, he didn't go out of his way to block the plate or anything. If the runner had chosen to he had a clear path to the plate and could have slid and reached the plate without touching Posey. That doesn't mean it is a dirty play, in real time you have to make a decision one way or the other before you know what the catcher is doing.
