  1. Brett Lawrie was derailed by injuries. This would have looked like an awful deal for him but been a bad one for the Blue Jays if they had signed it.
  2. Probably because if you look at deeper stats he really isn't doing that poorly. He has one of the biggest differences between batted ball quality and batted ball results on the year. It isn't amazing or anything but it really isn't anywhere near as bad as it looks if you stick to superficial stats that aren't at all predictive.
  3. A lot more goes into the strike out spike than just the players trying to hit HR. More ABs are against high end RP than ever before and the pitch training technology is ramping up way faster than the hitting. Even if nothing at all changed about how hitters approached the game you would see a big spike in K%.
  4. This is the Braves we are talking about, there is a decent chance they already gave him millions under the table when he was younger and they just didn't happen to get caught with this one.
  5. Out of the 3 young dudes Woodruff is the only one that profiles as a clear starter. Burnes and Peralta are both basically 2 pitch guys who have to overcome their weaknesses to have any chance to stick in the rotation. Woodruff has a true starter arsenal.
  6. The entire rotation has looked pretty bad at this point, it wouldn't surprise me if Chase ends up back in the mix at some point. It also wouldn't surprise me to see them panic and add Keuchel.
  7. xAVG is .194 and generally has been in the .250 range for his career. Also has only one barrell and a low launch angle. His xwOBA is .301 which is about league average and is mostly due to the good BB percentage.
  8. So I looked at xStats totally not knowing what to expect the results to be. Going into tonight's game his xAVG is .275, xwOBA is .356. He has only barrelled one ball all year which is pretty bad as his the 7.1 degree average launch angle. I think the fact he has walked more than he has struck out is padding his expected stats but his quality of contact has been pretty low.
  9. He tends to be really bad early in seasons so if this is a change on purpose I'm happy for it!
  10. While I'm sure he'll adjust you can't just chalk it all down to bad HR/FB luck. Burnes is in the bottom 25th percentile of xSLG, hard hit%, barrel%, exit velocity and xwOBA. He has been hit as hard as basically any starter in the game so far this year. It is a bit concerning. These stats still need a few more games before the start to become meaningful. (ERA takes more than 2 years to be meaningful which is why nobody should use it).
  11. In the early 80's you still saw a lot of pitchers in the 250-300 range. By the late 80s the game was already changing. It is mostly because back in the day a pitcher could take a lot of batters off because guys like Bill Schroeder made teams, where as in today's game he would probably have never made the majors.
  12. Not sure who said that but it is going to come down to the double play turn. Moustakas is a better fielder in general than Shaw and Shaw struggles handing hard to reach ground balls. I could see Moustakas being better, but we just haven't seen enough of the skills at 2B to know either way.
  13. I agree, it is why i have like half the messages in these threads blocked. You read really questionable posts by someone enough times and it is easier to just block them.
  14. of course, it's the first time I have benched him on one of my fantasy teams... I dropped him for a spot start by a Catcher. He was just a bench guy for me so no big deal but certainly bad timing since my normal 2B didn't have a game.
  15. well to be fair to the other position, the claim is not about average runs/inning over the whole season. It was more like when they score big early they stop scoring at all the rest of the game. I was trying to figure out a way to easily disprove this but it is difficult so I gave up. I think overall the claim feels worse as a Brewer fan and it is likely grossly exaggerated, however it also seems similar to the complaint of "playing to the competition" or something along those lines, but that does not really seem like a thing with baseball as much as football where you usually hear that. Since the pouring it on crowd started this they need to mine the data and prove their side I definitely agree that it is really hard to prove one way or the other. I decided to look at it and didn't really know where to start so just went with the tOPS+ which is certainly an imperfect method.
  16. You can complain about them, the complaints just need some sort of basis in fact. When you just make up random crap with no data backing it up people should complain.
  17. You have any data to contradict it? The Brewers were well above average in the 1st innings of games last year. They were below average in the 2nd inning but well above average in the 3rd inning. They were below average in the 4th inning. They were about average in the 5th and 6th inning. All of those are considering tOPS+ There is no pattern here at all, it is just random noise. They were a team that jumped on pitchers early and then had inconsistent results from that point on against starters just like everyone else. They were stronger than most in the 8th and 9th as well which feels just random.
  18. This quote applies to every single team in the league though, that is why it is so silly. Yes teams get off to leads and don't pad the leads all the darn time, all teams in baseball do it. This isn't some thing unique to the Brewers which is just absurd to believe. It is the opinion of someone who is watching baseball on level 1 to use a poker term. The more you understand the game the more absurd opinions like this are. When you start to think about the game at level 2 or 3 or even 4 these kind of things just don't matter anymore.
  19. I totally get the complaint that this team often puts up a crooked number early, then proceeds to go dormant for a long stretch of the game, while the opposing team chips away. It happened a ton in 2017 ... less often last year. But that's baseball. I get it too, but it isn't just a Brewer thing. Scoring tends to be at its highest in the first 2 innings and then in the middle innings. Pitchers get hit early before they find their groove and then again their 3rd time through the order. Trying to force this into a Brewers only thing is just not understanding the game.
  20. The fact anyone believes the problem with a team is some sort of inability to pour it on when ahead is so absurd that it baffles the senses that someone actually said it. There are a lot of ways a team is good or bad but pour on ability is not a real thing.
