  1. Sure but we really have no other choice, we do not have a single pitcher who can reliably break 160 IP or that can reliably work its way through the order a 3rd time. We pretty much have to go with a bullpen heavy strategy. It is going to tax the AAA/AA depth a bit as we will probably have to make some moves just to get fresh arms onto the team at some points.
  2. Nola's season had a ton of luck involved, this deal seems pretty fair. ERA rarely matches pitchers actual talent and in this case it is making him look way better than he was.
  3. So lets look at this from an IP standpoint. I can't project Nelson for more than 175 IP since he hasn't reached 180 yet and he was injured all of last season. Chacin is probably 180-190 IP. Anderson has never thrown over 160 that is probably his peak projection. Hard to envision Davies with much more than 160 IP. Burnes is probably capped at about 150 IP. Woodruff capped at about 150. They probably need at least 2 more starters in this mix even if everyone stays healthy. That would be Guerra and Peralta but that is assuming everything goes well. I guess that is why they drafted Tomlin for depth but I think they need at least one more depth guy.
  4. If anything about these projections stands out it is that the Cubs are going to be bad defensively and the Brewers are going to be the second best in baseball. That doesn't see all that likely to me.
  5. I do not believe they botched anything. They won a world series, were in the running for 3 more and are probably going to be in the running for the next 3. It isn't about botching it, it is just about the window being shorter than I expected. They also aren't underrated by most this season. That rotation has the potential to be really really bad. Lester's peripherals were awful last year, Quintana is now in his 5th straight year of decline, we have no clue what Darvish is going to do and Hamels has been in obvious decline. Sure maybe the good defense and overall experience leads to a decent rotation, it could happen, but it is just as likely that the Cubs have the 3rd or 4th best rotation in the division.
  6. I feel like teams are finally realizing really long high salary contracts are just not worth it and large contracts to older declining players are not worth it. The players need to adjust to it. After they adjust to it they need to ask for fairer arbitration rules so they can get paid earlier.
  7. Heck no, there is on reason to ever extend a RP especially one with such an erratic overall skillset.
  8. I certainly would not do this today considering how poorly he hit lefties last season. I also do not think his defense will age well, he is terrible at charging balls and doesn't move to his right all that well. Third Base is also incredibly deep right now at both the major league and minor league level in general.
  9. 1. This won't change anything at all. It just puts the valuation on a different party that is out of the players control. 2. This really makes no sense at all. 3. While I agree with you that this is an issue for baseball playoffs as well as some other sports like baseketball, I absolutely hate the format you suggest.
  10. No they haven't. I brought up the fact that I thought the Cubs were going to be a long term dynasty 3 years ago and mid season last year felt like they had made enough bad moves that their window was going to close in the next few years. Most people said I was crazy at the time. The Cubs looked like a team that was going to dominate the division for a good 10 years and now they look like they are in the running for the next few years. Almost nobody agreed with me mid season last year, that certainly isn't predicting the downfall for years.
  11. Rivera's career WPA is 57.3, That puts him ahead of Ruth, Manny, Gwynn, Schmidt, Rose, Dimaggio. He is an easy HOF player with on path to suggest he isn't when you add context. Hoffman and Gossage are in the range of players like Prince, Kiner, Santo and Baines. Probably not HOF players but since they decided being friends with Baines is enough to make him a HOF maybe they belong.
  12. I think it is a sign that like 80% of the truly awful voters are gone. There are still a few left but most of the just useless voters have lost their votes. With how awful the veteran's committee is the entire process is invalidated now though. It wouldn't surprise me if they put Pat Listach or Billy Joe Robidoux in, they just are voting for guys they liked at this point. Griffey, Ripken, Maddux all deserved this way more but you had these old baseball guys with no clue about the game voting with their hearts rather than their minds.
  13. Yeah your right. I am thinking of the wild cards. I just remember deciding between Atlanta and Philly for a playoff spot, that would have been a wild card.
  14. This is not true at all. Ottavino is roughly a 2.50 bbFIP player in 2 of the previous 3 years and he was hurt in the one bad year. Jeffress is a mid 3 ERA guy. Ottavino is an elite RP, Jeffress is just a guy who happened to get lucky a couple of times in a role that is hugely luck based. I would take Ottavino 9 times out of 10 over Jeffress.
  15. Yeah I have no idea what they are doing. As strong as the division is they should be selling off and rebuilding. That's the way it looks to me but I had no idea what the Braves were doing last offseason either and it seemed to work for them. As far as looking at what the division is doing I think that is a fool's errand. Had the Brewers tried to rebuild based off of when they thought the Cubs and Cardinals would be beatable again this team would have a bunch of great AA players right about now. I'm a bit confused by this because the NL East was wide open last year, nobody in the division looked like a viable playoff team which seems like the perfect time to go for it.
  16. Sonny Gray's bbFIP's the past 3 years are 4.87, 3.75, 4.41. If they get the best result plausible from him this is an ok deal. If they get the most likely results it is a bad one. He just hasn't been a very good pitcher in recent years. Just about anyone can find success in Oakland and that is where all of his perceived value has come from. Sonny Gray is most likely a weaker pitcher than Jhoulys Chacin but getting a lot more money.
  17. I can't see us giving anyone a big 2 year contract. That is paying them a year+ to be a bench player.
  18. There is not any election rule that prohibits someone who used steroids from being in the hall, it is people abusing language to fit their needs stopping him from being in. But simply put, the election of Baines and Morris pretty much make the entire process a joke and makes me not care a lick about who wins. I will not visit the HOF until they change something because it is completely broken at this point.
  19. I said this last season and got blasted but the Cubs are already on the decline. They made too many bad deals and traded away all of their minor league system. Their window is 2 or 3 years tops at this point. Their last 2 years have been a disaster, they went from a force for a long time in the NL to a really good team with a short window incredibly fast. They won a world series so it was worth it no matter what and they will be serious players for 2 or 3 more years so if they win another it just makes it even more of a win for them, but the way they built the team has seriously taken its toll on their future.
  20. Braun has been an above average player over the past 3 years when healthy so I don't really get the complaints about him. He has not been a problem at all for this team. I just wish he could stay healthy. Santana is a piss poor defensive player who hits from the wrong side of the plate and strikes out too much. He has good qualities as well but he just doesn't fit the current team needs at all. I wish we had gotten more for him but at least what we got fits on the roster in a better way.
  21. Marlins should be terrible. Pirates will likely be mediocre at best. Reds won't compete this year. Diamondbacks won't compete but won't be awful either. Padres are still going to be bad, they just aren't making good moves. Giants may lose 100 if their pitching doesn't get healthy.
  22. Santana's are also a bunch of busts though. Chris Duncan Scott Schebler Yasmany Tomas Justin Ruggiano Bud Souchock
  23. It seemed clear that at some point relying on Floro was going to cost them, just sad that it wasn't against us.
  24. I will give a different view, the IGT are downright toxic and make me not want to visit the site. If they were just negative or it was a clear case of just disagreeing it would be one thing, but it is a constant senseless series of complaints with no validity to them and it is just awful. I've left the site once because of how bad it became and I think I will probably leave it again because of it. ******** about every single play just gets old especially when baseball is so random over one game and so few of the complaints are actually grounded in any sort of fact. I'd say on average 90% of the complaints in the IGT are just utter meaningless nonsense, that number is just way too high. At this point I've blocked double digit posters because I feel they bring nothing valid to the site and that probably just suggests this site is no longer worth visiting for intelligent baseball discussion. It has become the jsonline game thread which was just unbearably bad.
  25. Brewers were 13th out of 30 teams in most affected by injuries on the year. Not sure why everyone is saying we had a healthy year. It wasn't a disaster year by any means but it wasn't particularly healthy either. Most of the key players on the team ended up on the DL at some point.
