  1. I would think at some point some pitcher came into a game and picked a runner off for the 3rd out without throwing a pitch. Don't know how to check if it has ever happened though.
  2. Parra must have snuck in and pitched that inning wearing a CV uniform or something.
  3. 10-15 so far, a lot of people are out of the running already! FTJ and Valpo are in good shape with a couple people able to win it if the Brewers sweep the Mets (myself included).
  4. 14-12 record 20 for the tie breaker.
  5. I think playing the hot player is just fine as long as you are looking at how he is hitting the ball and not just how many hits he is getting. Like everything else in baseball if you are really results oriented you will miss the big picture over a small sample.
  6. Good for Gwynn would require him doing well lately, which he hasn't. I mean seriously a small BABIP blip doesn't mean anything and he has stunk for the last week+.
  7. I cringe every night Gallardo is not pitching because it means we are probably gonna have to score 6 or more runs to win. You do realize this is not really true, that our team outside of Gallardo does not have an ERA of 5. I mean venting is cool and all as long as you realize that is what you are doing. The rotation is cold right now, it sucks but it happens. Even if it were true most teams have an ERA over 4 so that would realy mean we need to score less than 1 run a game more than other teams.
  8. Gwynn will still end the year with an OPS under .700, it is already dropping rapidly. He had a nice little 2 week period but every player has that. If we actually played Gerut we might see who got the better end of the deal but as long as Gerut sits on the bench the trade was just meaningless.
  9. What does the team really need if you are being realistic? We are pretty much set at OF with 3 solid starters and 2 above replacement level backups. We are pretty much set in the bullpen I'd have to say. We aren't going to upgrade C for better or worse and we are set at SS and 1B. That leaves SP, 2B, 3B. Gamel, McGehee, Hall, Counsell give us enough options at 2B and 3B that it isn't a pressing need so I doubt we get a replacement unless someone gets hurt or maybe if we pick up a Durham type guy who is a FA. That leaves SP as our one hole that could realistically be upgraded. We have Gallardo and a bunch of #4 type starters with maybe a healthy Bush being a #3 (regardless of what you think a #5 is much worse than guys like Suppan in reality). So we need to trade for a real starting pitcher, not some chuckle head like Chuck James, Ian Snell, Jorge de la Rosa, Jon Garland etc who might end up being a downgrade over what we have. That is really the one glaring need on the team. That was the glaring need going into the season and it still is the need, a front line starter. I don't know if we are willing to pay the price for a player like that.
  10. Could be, McGehee has to prove it a bit more with the bat though. McGehee is probably a full win better than DeRosa defensively though so he doesn't have to hit as well as him to be as valuable as him. That isn't trying to 'minimize' it, it is just being realistic btw. You can't simply ignore defense when looking at players and it chips away at his value as long as they are playing him in the IF.
  11. DeRosa is a nice little player but he does have his warts as well. He is below average defensively on the IF and has been very erratic as a hitter vs RHP. He has also faded a bit in the second half in each of his fulltime seasons which may or may not just be statistical noise but I could see it having some merit since he was a part timer so long.
  12. lcbj68c you were talking about moves made in the off season in the first place and a lot of your suggestions were simply not feasible (Burnett, Johnson etc) or just made no sense at all like sending Parra down to the minors and signing a Tony Armas or Shawn Chacon or Jon Lieber etc. These guys aren't really upgrades over who we have. The point is you were making it seem way easier than it is, like Melvin can just snap his fingers and get whatever he wants in the off-season when it just isn't a reality.
  13. You would have been glad you kept drinking if we lost too~.
  14. But again this just isn't reasonable. We already have 5 starters who had shown they are capable of being successful at the major league level going into the season. Do you send down Parra before the season just to sign Garland(4.90 ERA in 2008, 5.04 ERA in 2009)? Would you really be excited starting Chuck James and his 9.10 ERA from last year over Parra to start the year? He might have made marginal sense as a depth in the minors move but he is no sure thing. There were two options for fixing the rotation going into the season. 1)Trading/Signing a real #1/#2 quality pitcher which we explored and didn't find a deal(Vanquez would have been nice i agree). 2)Trading for a near major league level arm that we could sit in the minors and only bring up if someone gets hurt or struggles (something that never comes cheap). Signing some marginal guy just doesn't make any sense when you already have 5 guys.
  15. But it wasn't a glaring need. We don't need another back of the rotation scrub starter which most of the viable options you listed were. If we were going to add an arm it needed to be a front of the rotation guy. I mean almost every pitcher you listed is at best a sidegrade to what we have and the few that weren't were very expensive or had specific needs we couldn't meet (like RJ wanted certain teams etc.).
  16. It is really easy to play armchair GM but the reality is the pitching class was very thin this offseason and most teams are looking for help.
  17. Giants have been the luckiest team in baseball when you look at actual wins vs W3 so we better take 2 out of 3 here, especially if Lincecum doesn't pitch tomorrow.
  18. He certainly has some big holes in his swing so I could see pitchers adjusting to him and leading to a long slump(not unlike what they did to Hart). Question becomes does he adjust back or not.
  19. When Hardy is up I feel like he is either going to strike out, show warning track power, hit it hard right at someone or hit it hard and someone will make a diving play of the day type of play on it. When Hall is up I feel like he is going to strike out, pop out or meekly ground out. I guess that is the difference for me. edited for very significant typo.
  20. OPS underrates OBP so I think that big long post about how SLG is a better measurement than OBP except for the walks is completely off base. Harold Reynolds probably knows a lot about playing the game of baseball and the little things do matter, he still has no idea at all about how important OBP is vs AVG vs SLG.
  21. There was no real reason to expect Parra to fall apart the way he has given his career numbers. There is no real reason to think he can't become an effective major league starter even after what he has done this season. It just comes down to making adjustments so he can throw strikes again.
  22. I'm still not sure I can lose too much sleep over a 28 year old who we traded 4 years ago who can't really hit lefties and has a career .785 OPS so far in an extreme hitters park. I need to see him finish off this season with an .850+ OPS before it starts to bother me much and then even then who knows if he would have done the same thing as a Brewer.
  23. A month ago we were a lock for the playoffs because of how great the rotation is, now we are doomed because of how bad they are. I don't think anyone thought the rotation was the strength of the team but I'm surprised if anyone believes the last month is a true indicator of how good the rotation is either(we have a 6.77 ERA so far in June btw). I really shouldn't visit this site during our cold streaks because it just frustrates me too much. I predict that people continue to say this team is doomed until the all star break since we have a tough schedule and then they jump back on board in late July and August when we are facing the astros, nats, padres and pirates every day and then we see what the team is really made of in Sept because we mostly face the other teams in the playoff hunt.
