  1. If you are going to call Doug Davis a quality pitcher I'd think you have to call Capuano and Bush quality pitchers as well.
  2. To be fair I really blame tonight on Macha more than anyone. I was at the game and there were boos coming down as soon as Dunn was up to bat and Suppan was still in there, it was obvious to most that he was struggling and they had the heart of the lineup facing Suppan the 3rd time and should have seen him replaced. Then after he walked Dunn there were more boos because he wasn't removed. He got johnson to K on a marginal called strike and then willingham came up and hit the grand slam. At that point everyone wanted Suppan out and he was near 100 pitches but he got the next guy out on a hard hit fly ball. Then the next inning we rallied and they brought up Suppan to bunt in a game where we were down 3 and he was gonna face the other team for a 4th time the next inning, Macha was assinine enough to leave him in there to bunt of all things which very well may have cost us a run and we managed to score a few to make it 6 to 5. He leaves Suppan out there and he proceeds to walk a guy, get a sac from the pitcher, give up a single, give up a double and IBB a guy, at this point it is just absurd that he is still in of course and they finally replace him after the game is basically over. Suppan faced not 1 too many hitters, not two too many, not 3, not 4, but at least 5 too many hitters in this game. He isn't a great pitcher to begin with but he really was set up to fail tonight. This is the kind of game I expected out of Yost and it is sad to see Macha pull the same crap.
  3. Yes this team is all 6 ERA pitchers obviously, historical stats suggesting otherwise are just useless crap... The rotation isn't great but it isn't this bad either.
  4. Macha has replaced pitchers plenty of times before 100 pitches so his pitch count had pretty much nothing to do with it.
  5. They freak out when he is over 105 pitches and gets sent out for another full inning, that is a pretty far cry from 90 pitches. It has also generally been 105 pitches through 6 innings with a lot of runner son, I wouldn't mind it nearly as much if it were through 7 with very few base runners. By being healthy most of their careers, which isn't something Gallardo or Parra have been so far. If we were talking Dave Bush I'd have absolutely no problem with, someone like Oswalt, Santana etc no problem. These are very specific cases of pitchers who have not gone a full season yet in the major league careers and who are coming off of injury/fatigue shortened seasons. These are exceptions we are talking about, not the rule.
  6. I'll just add that I think the twins way of doing it is far from perfect, they have repeatedly failed to improve their team in season where they had a chance to do something in the playoffs. They have repeatedly built teams that were the 5th or 6th best in the AL but occassionally lucked into winning one of the weaker divisions in baseball. I just do not see the Twins model as a great one. Stick the Twins in the AL east and they are the Orioles. Stick them in the AL West and they are the recent mariners. Stick them in the NL Central and they are like the Astros. Stick them in the NL East and I guess they are the recent Braves. A team good enough to win the division with luck but bad enough they stand no chance at all in the playoffs. Edit for numerous typos.
  7. The RS vs RA hasn't suggest such a bad record so I don't put that much weight into it. However it does suggest a losing record which isn't good for a marginal playoff team, this is not a team that can survive some 'bad luck'.
  8. I'd really like to see Hardy moved for a pitcher and Lopez kept as an OF/2B/3B/SS. Bring up Escobar/Gamel and keep Lopez as backup. Let Hall, Counsell and Kendall walk. I like Counsell mind you, he is just getting too old for my tastes and I'd like to go another direction next season. Kendall is just dead weight since his defense has slipped so much this year and Hall has been useless for some time now.
  9. They most certainly are not. If Melvin trades for Halladay and he gets hurt in his first game I doubt very few people hold it against Melvin, at least not anyone looking at things rationally. Anyway you would have to look at every compensation pick we made and see what they are doing and every player we signed with any money we freed up in trades before you could make a statement like you are making. Not to mention every win the trades brought us increased team revenue which is helping the team. The only player we traded away that we are really 'missing' right now is Cruz. Bush has been better than Overbay and guys like Davis and Lee wouldn't be on the team now even if we didn't trade them.
  10. And if he hadn't been hurt and missed 80% of the season last year I'd agree but he was hurt and he missed most of the season. He is also the only plus pitching prospect we have that is likely to pitch in the next 2.5 years. This is a pitcher you really need to baby this season.
  11. I don't like LaPorta's odds at all and Gamel and Wallace are both the type of prospects that need their power to translate/improve to succeed. To be honest I'd be more surprised if all 3 were really good MLB players than if all 3 were backup type players. I imagine a random 2 of them end up above average but not great and one is a flop.
  12. This post goes beyond what a normal pitcher should do, Parra and Gallardo are not normal pitchers, they are young guys who don't have full seasons under their belts and both are coming off of shortened seasons because of injuries/fatigue. Same thing as Sheets last season, Eldred in his rookie year, Sheets in what should have been his CY year, Capuano when they pitched him on short rest to chase 20 wins etc This franchise has shown a lack of understanding of how to treat pitching and I really dislike it.
  13. I'd say the complete opposite, Sabathia's results were so far out of the range of expectations that to view that trade by what actually happened is borderline useless. We got extremely lucky that Sabathia had his best half season of his career after the trade, if he has what we should expect we probably miss the playoffs. I'm a bit Melvin backer but that trade was nowhere near as good as the results suggest most likely.
  14. Sure that makes sense on the prospect side of the equation since there really are no sure things. On the Holliday side of the equation they are getting less than half a season out of him so what kind of stats he actually puts up is largely going to be random.
  15. If Felipe Lopez comes out and hits 1.000 the rest of the season it doesn't suddenly make the trade a huge steal for the Brewers, it means they got lucky. At least that is how I look at things. The fangraph values are the same idea, obviously they can't be anywhere close to exact with prospects but then neither are the people who traded the players.
  16. To be honest at this point I hope we don't make any big deals. I don't see Gallardo not struggling in the 2nd half given how many innings he pitched last year and how much we've pushed him this year. In general I'd say the team underproduced on the season and it is getting late enough that I don't want to mortgage any of 2010/2011 just for 2009. Hope we get hot and the Cards and Cubs get cold.
  17. As the numbers I posted suggest your point was completely wrong, the Brewers built their playoff last year in June/July and August, they faded in Sept. I don't like calling people down like this but what you posted is 100% completely wrong.
  18. Brewers were 32-21 in June/July last year and 20-7 in August. They were 28-27 in June/July in 2007, hardly terrible.
  19. Other than a little HR/FB spike Looper is right around expectations.
  20. Baseball fans are almost always too results oriented. There was no reason to think that Hardy had already had his best season, there still is no reason to expect it. He is having a bad year, it happens to everyone. He is actually swinging at fewer pitches out of the strike zone this year than either of the past 2 years. He is swinging at fewer pitches in the strike zone as well. His in zone contact rate is the same as last year. If anything his discipline has improved. He just isn't hitting the ball with as much authority. The bad luck from early in the season is still suppressing his AVG by a good .030 or so. While a line of .260/.325/.406 isn't pretty it is still much more in line with his career.
  21. He had a 4.84 FIP and was neutral in HR/FB. His talent level as a starter is just not all that high most likely because he walks a lot of guys and gives up too many flyballs. I'm not saying I like Burns, I just don't see McClung as an answer considering it hurts the bullpen.
  22. McClung has been terrible as well so I really fail to see how he was a better option than Burns. Bush didn't come back when they thought he would, it sucks but it isn't anyones fault.
  23. 571 pitches is a sample you can work off of somewhat as well. He did most of his damage off of the standard fastball and struggled the most with the cut and split fingered fastballs. He swung at 22.5% of pitches out of the zone which isn't amazingly high or anything but he only made contact 46.9% of the time on out of zone swings which suggests he was swinging at pretty bad pitches a lot. His zone contact rate was around 80% which is pretty low as well. His overall contact rate was 70% which is right around Bill Hall levels which obviously isn't good territory to be in. I'd say he was at least partially overmatched.
