  1. Suppan's BB/9 is still high from the bad first couple starts, I don't think FIP really tells anything more than any other stat for his future this season, it is very fickle with small samples just like ERA is. I'd say slightly worse than his career numbers are probably about right.
  2. To answer this part specifically, I think Manny is the blossoming guy, I think you can look at Jonathon Sanchez as more of an example of the second type of guy. I don't have much faith that Sanchez will ever figure it out. He is more of an Oliver Perez or Scott Olsen type, I don't think Manny Parra fits that mold.
  3. I have no problems at all viewing as a future #2 btw. All he has to do is find a way to get through the order a 3rd time and he is a #2 right now, even without figuring that out my prediction is an ERA just south of 4 on the year until maybe hitting a wall late in the season from never going 200+ IP before.
  4. He never had major control problems in the minors so you have to assume he figures it out eventually. I think it is mostly him wearing down earlier than most pitchers, probably because of all his injury issues. Pitches 76-100 he has a career .995 OPS against with 1.29 K/BB, that is just terrible and is where almost all of his problems come from. He also struggles with his command in the first inning which isn't all that abnormal, a lot of pitchers have that issue.
  5. It can be, but in an individual game I don't really think it is. If Suppan has that same game it isn't a quality game either and he pitches out of those jams a whole lot less than a good pitcher. I guess it depends on what you are using quality start to judge. If you just want to know how good a pitcher pitched in his career you can mostly use ERA which will tell you more than QS, over a season some sort of composite ERA is probably a better thing to look. The entire point of QS seems to be trying to judge a pitcher on a single game and I think it fails pretty miserably at that. As a measurement of how consistent a pitcher is it is pretty flawed as well because of all the little flaws people already pointed out. QS is 3 ER as well for most sites at least, maybe a few attempted to change it and make it all runs but the standard definition is ER.
  6. Ray Durham doesn't make any plays unless they are hit right at him so it would certainly hurt the defense, but he would be a viable part of the solution at least. This is all probably jumping the gun though as this could just as easily be nothing as something. In the short term I'd say Counsell/Hall at 2B with Hall/Gamel/McGehee at 3B. Counsell is a better hitter than Hall vs RH pitching imo.
  7. I don't think ER should be the only thing you look at was part of my point. The other day Burnett pitched 6 IP with like 8 H and 6 BB and gave up 1 ER. I'm not someone who calls that a good start, that is a lucky start, it is bad hitting, it is a good result, but it is not a quality start. If he pitches like that every start he will have horrible results overall. QS is kind of like looking at AVG, it is sort of useful and very easy to figure out just by looking at a box score, but it doesn't tell you all that much. Something like game score is too complicated to figure out on the fly which is a big downfall but it does tell you a whole lot more about a start than QS does, it is kind of like OPS (I assume most people can't just look at a box score and figure out OPS in their head at least!). Not saying game score is perfect, just pretty readily available.

  10. Hardest hit ball of the rally(not counting the HR) is right at someone for an out. Fake Rally!
  11. Astros are making me mad~
  12. So I'm watching the Cubs game and Soriano just hit a HR to put the Cubs down 6-4, he watched it the entire way and walked over a third of the way to first base before jogging and they have the nerve to complain about Braun? Ridiculous.
  13. I should think Gamel needs to find his way into this game pretty soon.
  14. That happens to every single pitcher in baseball. Gallardo was cruising in a game earlier this year, suddenly gave up 6 ER in an inning and then cruised the rest of the game. Parra needs to be babied a little at 85+ pitches and when he loses his control like that in that pitch range you should take him out. Capuano was the same way for what it is worth even though people for some reason think Bush was even though it isn't true.
  15. I'm guessing his reasoning was that they had lefties coming up and it worked out for him but I still think it was a mistake.
  16. No, this is why Macha is beyond frustrating. Parra should have been out of the game 3 hitters ago now, this is as stupid as Yost here.
  17. I'm never going to understand managers. He is over 100 pitches, obviously is running out of gas and you have a rested bullpen. Why on earth leave Parra in for these last 2 guys.
  18. Even if he gets Rasmus I don't think you can let him face another RH hitter, not with how much all of his off speed is hanging.
  19. This is Parra's trouble area, 3rd time through the order and 80+ pitches. All his curves are hanging a bit. I just hope Macha has a quick hook here if another person gets on.
  20. With 7 BB and 2 HBP already today it is pretty pathetic we are only up 4-0. These are the kind of games you end up losing and really kick yourself. Let's add some runs please!
  21. Those mlb.com forums are complete trash in general, if you are really interested I'd probaby look at a blog game thread to see a reaction.
  22. I just hope that Macha sits Hall vs RH close to fulltime before the end of the season. Even Yost eventually figured out that Hall is not an every day player. He could probably get by playing every day at SS somewhere since you don't expect much offense out of that position but not at 3B.
  23. He does have issues the third time through the order, I don't disagree with that at all. But that isn't what people complain about in general. Most young pitchers have the same problem as well.
  24. Brewer hitters should be ashamed of themselves that inning. You can't let a guy off the hook with a 5 pitch inning when he isn't throwing strikes and has 60+ pitches through 2 innings. That was just terrible.
