  1. Duffy has looked more lost at the plate than Nelson though, swinging at complete junk that he has no chance to hit. Nelson has for the most part shown good plate discipline, he just can't seem to make any contact. These guys are all marginal players so I guess I just don't care what they do about the bench. Best case scenario is they sign someone like Edmonds.
  2. I agree that we will probably trade Fielder though it wouldn't surprise me to keep him and then only trade him next year if we are doing poorly at the deadline. You don't HAVE to trade every single player, letting them walk as a type A FA is a very viable method of building a team. You just have to hope that something like the Sabathia situation doesn't happen.
  3. He definitely looks better in the field this year but to be honest he looked a ton better last year as well and the fielding metrics suggested he was pretty close to average last year. He just faded late last year and that seems to have stuck in peoples heads.
  4. Those would be very misleading stats though. A ball hit right to Hart that he catches counts in those stats but really isn't telling you anything about how good the umpire is doing their job. You would have to isolate close calls and see what percentage of those they make. For balls and strikes my money is on under 75% personally.
  5. Carlos Lee is a much better fielder than Ben Sheets is a hitter, it isn't even close.
  6. Players back up every play so you really should never get an opportunity to take extra bases because of injuries. Most sports call plays dead after an injury so it doesn't matter if you are showing 'sportsmanship' or not.
  7. Also the pitchers who can hit generally get worse as they get older. Joe Sheehan had a chat the other day and mentioned that the best hitting pitchers are the ones who spend very little time in the minors so don't have time to lose their ability before making the majors. Pitchers just do not get enough ABs to stay in hitting form and I stand by what I said before, there is no bigger mismatch in professional sports than watching a pitcher try to hit. A good high school hitter can hit as well as many pitchers in the majors right now. Probably the second biggest mismatch is watching a bad free throw shooter.
  8. Oops you are correct, I was looking at baseballalmanac and didn't notice their stats only go through 2007 for some reason. So what I posted is how the Brewers had fared before last season.
  9. We are 75-82 lifetime vs the Pirates. We are catching up on them fast! Though to be fair we don't have a winning record against any NL team and are .500 against Ari and Cin.
  10. I don't watch ESPN but MLB network mentioned it a few times. It is just a fluke thing so I don't see why they would need to dwell on it much.
  11. Generally the complaints with Yost is he'd have someone in a platoon get hot facing say lefties only and then start them against righties and they would naturally stink as expected or he would pinch hit a lefty who is hot against the other teams LOOGY, silly stuff like that.
  12. Assuming teams still walk him after they realize he has absolutely no power. He has a skillset that really struggles to translate into major league success with way more disappointments than good players.
  13. I bet the older crowd would say no and the younger crowd would say yes. (I say that as part of the older crowd too)
  14. He is still popping up more than almost any player in baseball and he still strikes out too much. I'm going to put my money on this being a mini hot streak and his average dropping back under .250 though I really hope I'm wrong. I know he looks different at the plate and maybe the power spike is for real but I just don't see that AVG and OBP going good places with how he has been hitting so far.
  15. The financial aspect is the lost time from pitchers getting injured. Eventually we'll get enough high profile enough pitcher injuries that something will happen. Also the longer time goes by the fewer purists there will be who want to keep things the way they have always been.
  16. "Make the managers work a little. " 90% of these choices could be made by my 8 year old son though, it doesn't really add strategy to PH counsell vs a RH pitcher. A tiny bit of strategy goes into Counsell or Duffy or Nelson but it is a tiny small little bit. It is just something people are going to disagree on though so no real use arguing it. Eventually the financial side of baseball will probably force the DH on the NL whether they like it or not. In all of sports a typical pitcher hitting is the biggest mismatch I've seen. No other player in any sport is less prepared to do a job than the majority of pitchers trying to hit at a major league level. I'm not surprised that every season a bunch of pitchers get hurt while batting.
  17. No, but we have reached the point where pitchers don't get enough ABs to be effective at it at a major league level. Every year a few Parras gets hurt bunting and a couple Carpenters gets hurt swinging the bat or a couple Zambranos gets hurt running the bases. These are injuries that shouldn't be happening, especially in just one of the leagues. The DH will eventually come to the NL and I'll rejoice when it happens.
  18. I don't disagree with this in the long run but assuming Parra doesn't completely fall apart in his next start he is just getting his control and skipping him would not be a good idea right now. Also we have 3 starters who have never gone over 200 IP and 1 that has only gone over 200 one time in his career, so probably just giving them all an extra day off would be a better move.
  19. I think Hart probably should stay leadoff or batting 2nd, I know last year he seemed to think taking a walk was a bad thing but in those spots it reaffirms that his job IS to get on base first. Everyone's job is to get on base first, drive in runs second(yes even the middle of the order). If you turn the lineup over and get a lot on base you will score a lot of runs no matter what.
  20. He probably wouldn't have been injured if they had just limited his pitch counts more. I could have told you he was going to struggle to pitch 200 innings after so many partial seasons in a row. That is not how you bring a pitcher back from injury. I blame Yost more than I blame Sheets but who cares, it is over and done with.
  21. Skipping Parra at this point would just be idiotic, I sure hope they don't do it. He finally had a good game where he was throwing strikes, skipping him just makes him start over again in my opinion.
  22. I sure hope so, I will never understand why people think watching a pitcher other than a Gallardo type hit is entertaining and while it 'adds more strategy', it really doesn't add very much. Maybe once a week is there a tough choice with when to PH for the pitcher and I'm being generous there.
  23. I agree with keeping Hall at 3B, I disagree he has been playing gold glove caliber defense. He is great on ground balls in a hole, he is weak on groundballs he has to charge since his throws are generally bad and he is really weak on line drives which he rarely ever reacts to fast enough to catch unless they are right at him.
  24. I agree but I was mostly replying to this quote... Those are obviously safety related issues as well.
  25. Or throws into the dugout, he tends to be very wild on plays he has to hurry on, especially while charging.
